Holiday Taxis pre-booked airport/resort transfers – a rip-off !!!
My wife and I recently returned from a wonderful two weeks at the Movenpick Hotel Resort near Sousse in Tunisia. Great food, excellent service excellent facilities and only recently opened.
A word of caution when pre-booking your airport/resort transfer with Holiday Taxis.
A local taxi costs about £10 one way. A car organised by the Movenpick Hotel costs about £15 one way. If a pre-booked transfer is arranged with Holiday Taxis’ (as we mistakenly did) the price is a massive £41.50 for the one-way trip in a vehicle no better than the local taxi with a company called Saphir.
Our recommendation – do enjoy the Movenpick but do NOT use Holiday Taxis.

Our first impressions of this hotel were met. It looks visually stunning from the outside. However, on the inside it’s a different story.
The facilities for all inclusive guests were shocking. This is a massive hotel yet the only bar for all inclusive guests is a TINY little bar next to the lobby. The information, which we were given when we checked in talked of a bar by the beach area, this was still being built. The hotel did have several other bars but you could not get all inclusive drinks here. So all of the inclusive guests had to use this 1 tiny little bar to get a drink. When you finally did get to the bar you were given the third degree about whether you were all inclusive or not. There was no wristband or ID system so the staff had no clue who was all inclusive. I got sick of having a discussion every time I just want a glass of Coke! The bar staff were very off hand with all inclusive guests. On day’s when they felt like it they did table service in the bar, this was so slow. You would order drinks, which would never arrive. Trying to get a hot drink was near impossible. I ordered a coffee on one occasion and the waiter just sighed.
The main buffet restaurant service was just as bad. You would be shown to your seat and often sat for 10-15 minutes before anyone would notice you were there. Tables were not cleared so you would be shown to a table full of dirty plates. The buffet food was rarely re-stocked. The chef’s would wait for something to totally run out before cooking any more, meaning that there were long periods of time where food wasn’t available and long queues would form.
The evening entertainment DID NOT EXIST. There was none. The first night I asked at reception and was told there isn’t any. Even today I have just checked the Thomson website and it lists Daytime and evening entertainment, live music daily, beach chill out parties with DJ. This is/was a total lie. There was none of any of these on ANY day.
The Thomson rep at the hotel was very helpful. You know thing’s are bad when she start’s her welcome meeting with an apology to everyone for the bad service.
This hotel is just not ready for all inclusive guests. They treat business guests like royalty and all inclusive guests like squatters. However, the pool is great. The private beach is also nice and the beach staff stop you getting any hassle from local sellers. The sun-loungers are very nice and we did the “Laser’s & Light’s” excursion which was EXCELLENT.

Went with my daughter and had a terrible time.
Most of the premium facilities were not available because they were not build. This was dispite asking when we booked.
All inclusive guests are not allowed into restaurant until the rest of the guests are finished.
There was lack of attention to detail in cleaning etc.
Too many staff going around doing nothing.
Bar staff did not like serving all inclusive guests.
The thompson rep had sympathetic ear and thats all.
I have been on lots of holidays before and never complained.
To sum up, an overhyped Spa hotel with nohing to do except eating and drinking.

Wow; the first word that comes to mind to describe our stay at the Movenpick. From the approach we were impressed with the look of the building and this only grew upon entering. The Reception staff were approachable, friendly and efficiently working within a clutter free, spotless environment.
Check in was swift and we were led to our room, our bags carried through for us. We were informed of how everything worked and given the opportunity to ask any further questions at the touch of a button on either of our room phones.
Our room was on the ground floor with a terrace and was a twin. The decor was calming and neutral creating a relaxed ambience. Facilities within our room included a hair dryer, digital safe, tea making facilities, television and fridge. The latter you could arrange to have filled daily with drinks of your choice at an extra charge. There were a numerous shops/supermarkets nearby so if the minibar selection wasn’t what you wanted you could always buy drinks there. The closest being literally a 30 second walk from the front of the hotel.
Once settled in we were able to hang our clothes in the double slide door wardrobe and the shelves and drawers provided which were more than adequate. Our arrival was in the evening so we visited the lobby bar from pre-dinner drink where we met a the lovely barman Zaharias who put us immediately at ease without being overbearing. He became one of our friends during our stay. We then proceeded to the Estia Restaurant. We immediately were greeted at the door and informed we could choose any table at which we were instantly given the opportunity to order drinks. We chose a Rose named Ktima Gaia 14 18 which was so wonderful that we subsequently ordered a bottle to have with dinner every evening.
The food had a vast variation incorporating traditional Greek/Cretan cuisine, and others from around the world including Asian, and German. In fact I feel that there was a dish for everyone to enjoy. The starters offered included soups, cheeses, meats, salads and fruits which also were varied. Different breads were also available. The main courses gave you the opportunity to try things that maybe you would never have considered before but all were divine. There was absolutely nothing I could find fault with and the choices were different everyday. The desserts were beautiful and wonderfully presented. I myself have gained 10lbs during my visit but i don’t care as I had a great time gaining it.
The next day we arose refreshed and proceeded to make our way down to breakfast. We chose our table and were given the option of tea or coffee. The staff were wonderful and we always make sure we sat in the same section were Elftharia, Margarita and Litsa were working as they were so lovely and welcoming to us. Breakfast like dinner provided an international choice with a section dedicated to healthy options.
After breakfast we went to the pool. There were lots of sunbeds set out and towels available to borrow from the towel station at no extra charge. There were three pools for all guests and an extra that could only be used by guests in the bungalows section. The two outdoor pools we were able to use were fantastic if not quite cool being early on in the season. The indoor pool was also a joy to use during rainy periods. A pool bar was situated between the two outdoor pools ; where you could have your drink delivered to you in the seated area or to the table at your sunbed. Drinks could be paid for in cash or put on your room tab.
As we were half board we had the option to have lunch while out and about or we could use the Taverna (an on site restaurant) which again had a selection including Greek cuisine. The prices were reasonable and the presentation and quality of food was high. The local supermarkets are also stocked various sandwiches. The Taverna also offered live entertainment on Monday and Friday nights if you chose to take your evening meal there with a reservation. Although the Taverna was not within the half board you automatically got a 14 euros reduction off your meal if you chose to go there. The Movenpick also do a fantastic range of icecream. There were also coupons given out from time to time for a free scoop which was nice.
Check out was quick and easy and a room was provided to store baggage to allow extra time by the pool when you have a later flight. This was secure and there were changing rooms dotted around where you could change after in preparation for you flight.
To conclude I would recommend this hotel for those wanting a relaxing getaway. The city of Heraklion is a short bus ride away or a 30-40 min walk (taking it easy). There are lifts so if you are unable to take the stairs you can get around and a gift shop selling cigarettes, confectionary, maps, holiday paraphernalia and books/magazines in numerous languages. During our stay we observed a wide age group of cliental and it has proved especially popular to the older generation. My sister and I are 28 and 31 yet this in no way cramped our style. Ignore the negative reviews of this establishment because I have found no grounds at all for their validity.

First of all you cannot compare a five star European hotel with a 5 star Tunisian or Egyptian hotel. As the price is quite different, so is the quality and service. Movenpick is a Tunisian 5 star and I think it is easily the best hotel in Sousse. Absolutely the best feature of this hotel is that it is new. The impressive hall (in many Tunisian hotels the best feature) is tastefully decorated, although you soon notice that the palm trees are awfully plasticky, and the few real benjamin plants are about to die.
It is situated a walking distance to the medina and the corniche, where you can enjoy the flavour of everyday life of the Tunisian people. But if you have a room facing the road, it can be quite noisy all night long.
The service is generally good. Perhaps the beach people spend too much time joking with one another and not helping you with your beds (which are very comfortable), but on the whole most people work hard and are quite helpful and nice. Especially at the restaurant, the waiters are hard working and they try to make everybody happy. It would be very difficult to single out the best waiter, but it is quite easy to indicate the worst. I think his name starts with Abd(ullah?) and he has a mole on one of his cheecks. In my opinion he should not work in direct contact with the hotel quests. I have seen people asking him several times for this or that and then, giving up, helping themselves, which, was observed by the other waiters with embarassment and they tried to alleviate the situation. But the bad feeling remains. Oh, there is one thing this waiter is good at: quarreling with the hostess for bringing more quests into his section. When this happened to us and we asked to be put in a different section because of this waiter, she only smiled knowingly...
The food is fine, although there will always be some who would complain the food becomes too repetitive. The quality of food is fine as well (but certainly not 5 star by the European standards). You get fresh orange juice for breakfast; there is ice-cream for dinner (alas, not the Movenpick, but some local make); good lamb and plentiful sea-food. There is only one thing that I would have to complain about - namely, there is no fresh bread for breakfast (there is almost warm, crunchy bread for dinner, though ), which in case of the white French bread they offer can spoil the breakfast. I even talked about it to one of the chefs, and he apologised, but in a few minutes they brought more ... yesterday's bread.
The pools are very big and clean. Some of my friends complained that there is nothing to do in the evening, but we were happy with the piano music in the bar.
The rooms are nice, as long as you are lucky to get a nice view - because even the so called (superior) sea-view rooms do not always offer what you could imagine - sometimes it is more a view of the wall of the neighouring wing than the sea. So it is always better to see the room before you accept.
And beware of touching the railing at your balcony with your clothes - although the hotel is new the metal rails are already quite rusty and badly need repainting!
All in all, the holidays at this hotel can be a real pleasure and I would recommend it to all who want to enjoy Tunisia with its warm people and beautiful beaches and do not make it a hobby of finding fault with the service or the food :)
