Down Hall Country House Hotel

I have just spent 3 nights at the hotel with 3 other people. the rooms - though all different in size and layout were comfortable, especially the beds. The staff were welcoming and friendly. the meals we took in the Grill room were all excellent with a wide enough choice for 3 days. there is plenty of space to chill out in with a large sitting area. The grounds are well maintained and there is very little sense that you are near to Stansted Airport. I would certainly recommend it and came away considering going again to the New Year... more

I can now understand why this hotel attracts such a range of different ratings from vistiors. I booked 1 night at the hotel for my girlfriends birthday between christmas and New Year. The setting is perfect, a very impressive building in beautiful surroundings. The welcome was very friendly and the first impressions of the room were positive. We had an executive room (booked through lastminute.com) which was very spacious, had nice traditional decor and had a nice view over the fountain. Down Hall Hotel really does have huge potential. The building/grounds are fabulous, the house and the new extension blend in well together. The public areas have been done to a high specification, and our executive room was perfectly acceptable, though I guess 12 months down the line will need some kind of a refurb. What seemed to let down the side was the obvious lack of training of the staff, which is surely a management issue. I booked a night at Down Hall as a 15th wedding Anniversary surprise for the hubbie. Did not read any of the reviews on this site until after i booked it and i must admit some of them did get me worried- even considered changing to another hotel. As it turned out it was great. I booked an executive double room and the one we were allocated was gorgeous,on the corner of the building, having large windows to both sides and overlooking the fountain. We stayed here on our wedding night after having the most fantastic day celebrating in Hatfield Heath. Even though we booked a few months before we were lucky to get a room as the hotel was nearly full. On arrival we were upgraded which was good. The room was nice and spacious although the decor was a little tired. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet - it was totally quiet and despite being close to the airport we didn't notice any aircraft noise.

We spent 6 nights at Down Hall and enjoyed it immensely. We almost didn't stay here because of the previous bad review. Also, there was a heat wave and the rooms aren't air-conditioned. But the temperatures cooled and we moved from the nice, but predictable Marriott in Broxbourne, to a majestic room at Down Hall. We booked a one night stay, with breakfast and taxi/chauffeur transfer to and from stansted airport. We got a one night stay, no breakfast as we left too early (7.00am, with no alternative made available), a shuttle bus transfer that left every hour (not quite a taxi) but actually left too early (6.45) so we had to wait for the next one, and no return transfer because they only run until 9.00 am and start at 8.00pm (did I want to wait from when my flight landed at 2.30pm? Stayed there for 3 nights on business. Rooms had no A/C and it was 30 C outside. Towel rails and heating on and not able to turn off in the room. Food OK but had stuff out of my room stolen. Management totally unhelpful and not bothered. Just gave me a peice of paper and would not call the Police. Would not stay here again over priced and poor value for money Worth only 1 star

Stated at the hotel on business recently - very impressed with the hotel and service. The room I stayed in was very spacious and well decorated - and I did not see any signs of neglect or deterioration anywhere. Service was fast and friendly. Would recommend.

My husband and I stayed at Down Hall to attend a family wedding in June. The hotel is convenient to Stanstead airport (taxi cost £17 each way), although the nearest village seems very small. The bedroom we had was a decent size (with a kingsize bed and a duvet rather than blankets) and with a good sized bathroom. TV and safe were both working. Plenty of hot water during our stay. The hotel was comfortable and the staff although young were friendly and helpful, although bar service could be a little slow. We found the hotel pricey... more
