ok i guess given not much else around
I stayed here after a disastrous last trip to colchester when I stayed at The Red Lion. Now that WAS awful. Anyway.. the holiday inn.. It looks nice on arrival - clean, nice (small) beer garden, comfy etc. It also appears to be quite wheelchair friendly - automatic doors and there is a wheelchair lift into the restaurant. My room - clean and comfy. No shower gel though and none arrived when i asked for some Service - tried to call down for an iron. No reply. Walked down to reception & got told they only had 12 for the... more
Far better than expected
We stayed here for a Saturday night whilst touring Suffolk. I used Priority Club points for my stay and we were upgraded to an Executive Room. These seem to be the same size (about 20 sq m - not huge) as standard rooms, but come with a robe, slippers, two bottles of water, bar of Dairy Milk and some good mags (The Economist etc). Our Sunday newspaper was also free but this could be a general perk. All rooms have a tea tray etc. The photos on the website are accurate. This is a very pleasant 1980's property with recently refurbished... more
Excellent little one night stopover.
My wife and I stayed at the Holiday Inn Colchester for just the 1 night for a wedding we had at Layer Marney Tower and for what we paid was an excellent night. The hotel itself is not in Colchester but just outside off the A12 so will need a taxi into town if Colchester is what you are here to see. There are plenty of parking spaces around the hotel as we drove up. Checking in was straightforward and quick as it had all been pre paid. The 2nd floor (only 2 floors so no lift) room was very large, a lot larger than what we have been... more
Brilliant
Wasn't sure what to expect after reading the various reviews but have to say we had a brilliant time. We booked the Zoo package which included Zoo tickets, Dinner & Breakfast all for just £110! The food was excellent and the staff were all very friendly (even when my daughter vomited in reception) We would definately use this hotel again.
Very disappointing
I went to my home town for the first time in quite a few years and booked this on a reasonable deal. The rooms are fine, what you would expect from a big chain like Holiday Inn, was clean. The reception staff were friendly but their local knowledge leaves room for improvement. My only gripes about my stay were (a) it was noisy with children running about totally out of control, can't some parents have consideration for other people?, and (b) the restaurant is ghastly, poor food, almost inedible cooked breakfast . The price of mine... more
A good average
We have stayed at this hotel a couple of times before. It always seems to be hosting wedding parties, but we were not worried by any noise as the party and music is in a separate building. The staff were helpful and courteous, though the room was not as clean as usual. The breakfast is still poorly organised and expensive and you would be better going to the nearby Sainsbury's where the breakfast is better and cheaper. There is also a good little pub (Brick & Tile) about half a mile from the hotel and a better one (the... more
Go some where else
We spent a night at this hotel in August 2006, and would never return. I asked for a quiet room when i booked in, and i got the room next to the staircase, which was very noisy especially with people banging the doors. i asked for another room, and was told that there were no other rooms available, so we had a bad nights sleep as a result. I have been to dozen of hotels over the years mainly with my work, and i have to say that the dinner at the hotel was the worst i have had for years. Some of the food was burnt, some was cold and... more
Lovely stay in Colchester
We booked 2 Executive rooms for a 3 day stay with our children. We were extremely pleased with the rooms and the hotel in general. The hotel was busy with the inevitable wedding but this could not be heard from our rooms. The staff coped well with the large number of guests needing breakfast and we enjoyed our full English breakfast. We enjoyed a lovely meal in the hotel on our last evening. We have now stayed in the hotel several times over the last few years and have always enjoyed our stays here.
Nice hotel, Bad restuarant
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Colchester for a weekend break. We are priority club members and we find Holiday Inn;s and Crowne Plaza hotels very pleasant to stay in. Our room was automatically upgraded due to being a priority club member, so no problems on that score. However we decided to dine in the restuarant the first evening as we had arrived late. I ordered stir fry vegetables on a plate of noodles and my partner ordered trout. The meals arrived and they were terrible. My stir fry consisted of a small handful of noodles... more
Surprisingly nice
Stayed here with work last week. Have never stayed in a Holiday Inn before and have to say it was much nicer than I was expecting. My room & ensuite were spacious and the decor pleasant and modern. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast - a lot of choice. Bar - a bit empty and lacking in atmosphere but ok. Location - near the dual carriageway but not noisy. Would happily stay there again.
