Ibis Birmingham City Centre Hotel Reviews

4 / 10
Aug 2006, Mrs P Brown

Do not use this Hotel if you are hoping for a good night's sleep!! The hotel blurb says it's central to the city, and it certainly is, less than 5 minutes walk from the Hippodrome and the Bullring. Unfortunately it doesn't say that it's also slap bang in the middle of many... more

Not Bad
Staff: all seemed quite young and to busy giggling and chatting to be much help. I was with my same-sex partner and they gave us a twin room then gave us dirty looks when we asked for a double-not the best attitude for a hotel in the gay village! Room: Nicer than we expected-clean and modern looking. Bathroom was quite cramped though. Walls were VERY thin, we could hear everything next door and people in the corridor all night. Hotel: modern looking, big and clean. Location: fantastic, near to the bullring and the gay village. NOTE the hotel states it has snacks available 24/7 -this is not room service, the hotel doesnt offer room service. you have to go and eat in the dining room, and after 10pm the only thing available was pizza or sandwiches. An all round basic hotel in a good location, good value for money
Nice Hotel, but very noisy
Stayed here for the German Market in November. Room was smallish but clean and tidy, with a comfortable bed, tea and coffee facilities, and good selection of TV Channels (including German, Spanish and French). We unfortunately got a room on the side of the hotel overlooking 4 bars and restaurants, which banged on until 2am. Try and ask for a room on the other side of the hotel if you stay there. The hotel was also full of a stag and hen party group who were noisy beyond belief. Not the hotel's fault, but I guess they were hardly going to stay at the Holiday Inn ;-) Great breakfast, as always, in Ibis Hotels - a snip at £4.95 each.
Try another budget hotel...
First impressions when you enter the building for the first time are great, there are nice people at the reception and decor is modern and clean. But when you are given your room key and arrive at your room - thats when it worsens. The bedrooms are ugly and cramped, bathroom is tiny, and the bed to top it off, was DISGUSTING - stale jizz covered the horrible murky brown blanket. If you want a nice romantic break away - NO WAY - you wont be dieing to jump in the bed. However if you want a place near restaurants and bars - skip the long taxi ride, it could be a consideration.
Very basic!
Use to be a very cheap place to stay but now more expensive. They have the nerve to increase the price by £10 if there is a event going on. The rooms are very basic, i don't think they were that clean because there was a damp smell in my room and a dirty jumper under the bed. However if you want to me close to the shops they this is ideal because it will only take you 2 minutes to get to the Bull Ring. Also very close to the train station.
Not bad!
the hotel was very basic for the price of £53 per night and an extra £5 for the brekkie! which was not up to much, not much choice! and if you want a real good nights sleep then do not stay in the city centre! it was such a hot day when i stayed and there is NO AIR CON. in any of the rooms. i could not have my window open either because i was in a room on the first floor and anyone could have got in my room. it was handy as it was near all the bars and clubs!!! they were ace!!! and one final point...after my night on the lash i went to reception in the hotel in the hope they would sell me alcohol, they didnt but the guy behind the desk told me he would sell me a bottle of vodka that he found for 3 quid!!!!!!!!!!! i didnt buy it..........
Stay away from Street Side
Ibis hotels are known for value and this is no exception, however DO NOT stay here unless you can get a room towards the back of the property. Since there is no A/C you will depend on open windows and the front of the building looks out onto a strip club and the action doesn't stop until 3-4am nightly. For some reason, the phone system was off and on a number of times during the night, fine if you have a UK cell phone, but as an international traveler, I NEEDED the phone system. While the property was generally clean, it is quite stark, even for an IBIS. There is no wireless or wired ethernet access. Stop by the desk and pick up 4-5 beers before bed and it seems a lot better! Avoid the breakfast buffet and hit the Costa Coffee stand in the Bullring.
Typical Ibis hotel (in my opinion)
If you've stayed in any Ibis hotels before then you'll probably know what to expect. This one is fairly central for Birmingham City centre attractions such as China Town, the Bullring shopping mall, the local markets, the gay quarter and New Street Station. The rooms are adequate, a good size but the bathrooms are the smallest I've ever come across in a hotel! It can get quite noisy outside and also the bedroom walls are very thin so you can hear everything your neighbours are up to (quite entertaining during my stay!). Breakfast is self service and very good value. Overall this hotel is adequate for a one or two night stay and very good value for money in a city centre. I've stayed here on three seperate occaisons now and would happily go back. Just make sure when you book that you get this hotel and not the very nearby Holloway Circus one.
Very Basic
Please don't expect very much from this establishment. Its very basic, and just a place to rest your head. I stay in here regularly on business travel, and find it to be 'just enough'. Its plus point is its vicinity from the main station at New Street, and hence just a short train trip from Birmingham International.
Very Handy
I have stayed at this hotel several times. It is basic, but I've always found it clean.Handily situated for the Station and new shopping malls and aneasy walk into City centre for meals. Can be a little noisy outside but the room rate £46 makes it very good value for money.
Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in...
If your looking for a quiet, clean and homely hotel to stay in- dont come here. With the bars at your doorstep its good for those looking for some late night beverages and fun- but if you want sleep then you will be sure not to get some untill the bars close (2am). The room smelled bad and the bedding was tatty and the beds were not comfortable. Next time Im going to stay at... ANY other hotel birmingham but definitely not an IBIS one.
