Oakley Court Hotel

I was staying here for a company conference, but had decided to book an extra night if my room happened to be available, and invite my other half down. Therefore duly checked as soon as I arrived, at 9 am on Friday, whether i could book the extra night, and was told there was full availabilty and it "shouldn'T be a problem". I asked to actually confirm the reservation, and the receptionist said she would do so as soon as her supervisor arrived. We did a legoland package, which was a really good offer, booked directly with the hotel and included breakfast, dinner for 1 night, a picnic and legoland tickets for 2 days. We were worried that the Hotel might not be suitable for children, but we felt totally at ease and welcomed and the children loved it too. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We arrived at the hotel slightly earlier than the 2pm check-in time, but were pleased to hear that our room was ready. We were directed to the 'Oakley Lodge' (a seperate building to the hotel in the same place as the Health Spa). We were very disappointed. The room was dark and dingey, with stained grubby wallpaper with a strong smell of stale smoke. We stayed at the Oakley Court Hotel in July 2006 on a short weekend break. I'd read the reviews on tripadvisor and gathered there were a number of comments concerning the attitudes of the staff but thought I was more tolerant than most. I must make it clear this is not a reflection on all the staff but there were a number (serving in the bar) who looked like they had been drafted in from the surrounding "job centres" (looked like they needed a haircut and a good wash) to make up the waiting staff for a wedding that was taking place.<br... more

We were attending a wedding nearby and were advised that this was the 'luxury' option. I wish we had checked Tripadvisor more thoroughly beforehand. Essentially you should believe everything you read about poor service (the only exceptions being the excellent concierge staff). On the Saturday night having arrived back from our wedding we adjourned to the bar for a nightcap. We gave up after 15 minutes when we had failed to attract the attention of the bar staff.
