When I joined some friends in Manchester recently I stayed in the Ibis on Charles Street which is located just five minutes from Canal Street and the bus station; and ten minutes from Piccadilly Station and the city centre. It was also one of the best value city centre hotels. I would advise booking if you are staying at weekends. Rooms are mainly doubles.
As the hotel is an Ibis, you can expect certain things from the hotel, such as a bar, restaurant and 24 hour reception and rooms of a certain standard. This is certainly had. The restaurant, whilst not exactly cordon bleu was good value, as was the bar. The food was mainly burgers, chicken, nachos type meals suiting people requiring a quick, filling meal before going on elsewhere. The reception staff were mainly helpful, though I would prefer a baggage storeroom, rather than just leaving my bags by the reception in the time between checking out and actually leaving the city.
I was given a disabled room, even though I am able bodied. This wasn't a problem but for two things:
(i) It was next to the lifts, which have an announcement at each floor which could be heard.
(ii) The bathroom flooded as there was not adequate drainage and as there was a slope into the bedroom, all the water then ran down that and spread across the bedroom carpet rapidly after just an average time in the shower by one person.
The toilet was also really loud when it refilled.
Apart from this the room was clean and spacious allowing wheelchair access all around the room. There was TV with remote control, small wardrobe unit and tea and coffee making facilities, and a low bed.
I spite of the little problems I had with the bathroom I would still recommend this hotel as it is clean, central and reasonably priced. I believe there is also a car park underneath for those arriving by car.
