I thought the hotel was vastly improved since my last stay, i have stayed before in a room at the back of the hotel which did not have a great view but ok if you are on a budget, this time i paid a bit more and stayed in a balcony room which was excellent. The room was air... more

Fanastic
Well, i can only say that I am most impressed with the standard of this hotel in the sleepy end of the resort of beautiful ramsgate. rooms are maintained to a high standad with clear renovations throughout. We stayed in a four-poster room which had its own enclosed balcony overlooking the panoramic sea views.Food was amazing - ham salad in the bar only £3.00! Too much food, and nice friendly staff to serve. The venue room is very traditional, and would cater well for a large event. 24 hour internet access proved useful too.
Clean & comfortable what more could you want
Recently refurbished, clean and comfortable. Ignore the dingy corridors and staircases that lead nowhere and enjoy your nicely furnished room & bathroom. A short walk along the sea front to the bars & restaurants at Ramsgate harbour (and there's even a cinema nearby). Typically overpriced UK hotel - but they are all like that.
Nice place...
They Comfort Inn Ramsgate hotel is a nice place. We have now stayed on two occasions and enjoyed them both, nothing seriously major. The first time we stayed in August 2005, on the second floor, which had a four poster bed and balcony, which was unexpected and not bad for £65 for two of us for the night. When we stayed in April 2006, a few days ago, it was not too bad. We stayed on the top floor, room 403 i recall, directly outside the cramped, slow lift. I was extremely hot in the room, as the joining room next door we were told was freezing cold, and was a mystery. You also would not htink the hotel was called Comfort Inn, as most of it said San Clu hotel, previous name. All in all good stay.
Pretty good stay! Suprised
My self & Partner stayed at the comfort inn, for an overnight stay, due to a family party. I have stayed at a few hotels in Ramsgate & this is definately top of my list. As previous reviewers have said, it is a little dated but wouldn't you be if you were built thousands of years ago! the room was spacious, warm with a massive bathroom/en-suite, clean & tidy. Varying menu for evening meals, from bar snacks to full blown steak! yum. Overall the best place to stay in Ramsgate by far!!
Short Stay
We stayed for two nights in Dec 05. The room was good - clean and spacious. Location is excellent overlooking the sea. Contintental breakfast was good Downside was lack of attention to detail like empty bathroom soap dispensers and bathroom radiator not working. Also the lift was out of order one day.
very friendly
lovly big rooms only thing did not like was balcony lights are supposed to go out at 1.30 am according to staff but are still on at 6.30 am keep on thinking its morning but really enjoyed our stay mr mrs bridger
A Comfort Inn that is a historic monument!
The Comfort Inn Ramsgate (it no longer trades as the San Clu or under the Minotel banner) is a Grade II listed building. While this normally prevents changes to the exterior of the building, it appears that in Ramsgate they have also applied the same principle to the interior and the fittings. What you have is a hotel that trades under a contemporary brand but which is essentially still a 1960's seaside establishment. This means that it is a bit of a warren, lots of fire doors (6 doors between our room and reception if you didn't use the lift), rooms on half floors, rooms of varying sizes, shapes and bedding arrangements (I have never seen so many many beds in a family room before), fittings from various periods and styles. The dining room is in the old but not quite grand style. The bar comes from the formica table period, the bed from the pre divan period. The one lift is small, slow, serves only the main floors and is a bit claustaphobic. Did this put us off - no we had a great time and even extended our stay. The hotel is in a splendid position on the East Cliff on a relatively quiet road above the main town beach and you should be able to see France and Belgium from the front (although we didn't because of a heat haze). Most things worked - most of the time. We had a side sea view room on a half floor which was spacious but slightly tatty. There were signs of refurbishment underway in parts of the hotel - although whether this will just add character from another period to the already extensive collection remains to be seen! We had a great rate which didn't include breakfast, but despite intending to look after ourselves - we even took our fridge into the room, we cheerfully paid the princely sum of £3.60 each for the continental buffet breakfast. This was one of the best we have had in a hotel - lots of fresh fruit, home made jams and preserves all presided over by a lady who although a bit off putting at first, we realised genuinely enjoyed her job in looking after the guests. The toast was freshly cooked to order and requests for non standard drinks were efficiently and speedily dealt with. We didn't eat in except for breakfast but the menus in the room have been fairly accurately described by the previous reviews. Reception staff we found helpful and efficient. Don't go expecting much and you won't be disappointed.
(Comfort Hotel) - plus and minus points
If you're looking for a bed, real ale and a curry under the same roof then the San Clu is the place for you. The rooms seem to have been recently redecorated and are "clean and comfortable", but if you seek minor faults then you shall find. "Make do and mend" is a continuing theme in Kent ever since WWII, and although some real effort has been put into moving the ambience of the rooms upmarket, reminders of budget hotel standards (e.g. shower heads, thermostats, rattling sash windows) can be seen and heard here and there. Another feature of this hotel is that the rooms get progressively warmer with floor number. UK visitors may feel more comfortable on the 1st and 2nd floors, US with the 3rd. Only residents of equitorial zones should demand a fourth floor room. The most expensive rooms overlooking the sea feature four poster beds and a glazed balcony. The staff are quite friendly and efficient in their work. The restaurant is a strength of the San Clu (Comfort) Hotel, and although you won't see the inspectors from Michelin queuing for a table, the menu is in the "starving stallion" pub style with good value dishes overflowing the plate in an effort to quieten noisy tummies. The menu also features a good range of Indian dishes and they are competently presented in an authentic Indian high street cafe style than the upmarket Bangladeshi that is more usually equated with Indian Cuisine. If you have a cheap room round the back, the smells coming from the kitchen will make you hungry ! A word of warning about breakfast. Unless you have made explicit arrangements otherwise, any included breakfast may turn out to be continental style rather than cooked. A (good) cooked breakfast involves an extra 3.40 GBP charge at the time of writing in such circumstances. The bar is competently stocked, and three Real Ales were available on handpump during the stay. Drinks are good value being at pub rather than hotel prices, but beware the Hotel Bar keeps the antiquated World War I licensing hours currently forced on pubs in England and Wales rather than hotel style hours intended to accomodate thirsty residents. Late drinks after 10.30 or 11pm may involve "Room Service". Internet Access from the 2 computers in the hall is charged for at a very reasonable 1 GBP per hour, but Wi-Fi users will have to buy a scratchcard from reception. The front of the hotel overlooks the sea, and on a clear night, the dim, twinkling orange lights you can see far away on the distant horizon are indeed those of towns in continental europe. I suspect how happy you will be with this hotel will depend on how much you have paid for your room. Do bear in mind that the room prices might be offset by reasonable meal and bar prices, but if you are paying the rack room rate coming in off the street you are less likely to be delighted than someone who is staying on a discounted rate.
value for money
We have stayed at this hotel on two occasions and found the service and the staff to be excellent. The executive rooms are really worth the extra money, ours had a balcony which we used to have breakfast and the 4 poster bed was very comfortable. We used the restaurant once and the menu is not what you would expect from a 3 star hotel, but it works, we had curry and a roast beef which was definatly value for money. would definatly stay here again. book on the internet as it is cheaper.
What a dump!
We were forced to stay here in Dec 04 after our plane was delayed at Manston. £80 per double room and we needed two. How they have the nerve to charge this is beyond me. Damp, musky smells, cramped, filthy carpet. Overheated - could not turn off the radiator and the windows were stuck. Most uncomfortable bed we have ever used, I will not use the word slept. The bathroom was the sort that should be shown on the Life of Grime TV programme. The dining room is a sight to behold, it looks like an old church hall. The standard of food almost saves the hotel as it is quite good but eat here if you wish but stay somewhere else!
