Not so 'New' Wellington Hotel
from hickers
I stay in at lease two hotels every week, and I can say this is not a good place to stay. There is something so depressing about hotels like this. A large hotel, it was probably good in its day, but now looks like a tired worn old place that has seen better days. The staff all looked depressed too, no wonder really.I didn't particularly feel safe staying there, which is a bit of a shame as it is a great location. If people think this is a good hotel, I would hate to see one they think is bad.
Lovely wedding night
from new_wifey
We stayed in The New Wellington on our wedding night, having had our reception at its affiliated restaurant The High Rocks. I must admit to being a little apprehensive, having read some of the previous reviews after we'd booked. However, I think there must have been some big changes in staff or management as our experience was entirely positive. When we rang the hotel to book, the man I spoke to was extremely helpful - he advised me which was the nicest bridal suite (they have several) and booked it for us. And it was a really magnificent room, so our wedding day was finished off wonderfully! Most of our family and friends also stayed and had drinks in the bar during the evening and we found the service efficient and not at all rude or unfriendly as previous reviewers had. My husband and I didn't go for breakfast but those from our group who did had no problems at all and enjoyed it. A couple more things which convinced me to write a review: my grandmother got home and realised she'd accidentally put her camera film in the bin in her room, so was panicking. When she rang and spoke to the duty manager, he arranged a search for it and then rang her to tell her it had been found and that he had put it in the safe for her, which was very helpful. Finally, due to illness, we had to bring the wedding forward at the last minute - the member of staff I spoke to about rearranging our dates couldn't have been more helpful, and he patiently went through the reservations of each member of our group to ensure I hadn't missed anyone out when I changed the bookings. After our experience at this hotel we would certainly recommend it to others.
Noticeable improvement

We stayed here 2 years ago and weren't too impressed at the time, however some friends of ours told us the hotel had changed management, so we deciced to give it another try. Under new management and staff, there is now a refreshing difference, the staff are very friendly, and the customer service was excellent. The bedrooms have been up-graded, and the hotel certainly lives up to it's AA 3 star rating. Thehotel is ideally situated at just ten minutes walk to the town centre and the Pantiles, and is away from all the hustle and bustle in the town. I've already booked again for us stay later in the year, and would now recommend it new guests. Tom Taylor, Middlesex
Do not waste your money here.
from Tina34
Very expensive for what you get. Rooms are clean but are in serious need of updating. The shower flooded the bathroom. If you request room service they tell you to get it yourself. The Italian restaurant food is good but the head waiter is rude, do not book Half board as the choice of menu is very poor. Car park is very small. Disabled access is also inadequate.
Very pleasant Stay

We got a special 3 night package at the New Wellington in a large en-suite modern double room, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The meals in their Italian restaurant are top notch, and they serve a great cooked breakfast as well. The Duty managers Colin and Khalid were particularly helpful, and the staff very friendly. We would recommend it, and will certainly go back. Clive and Jean Thomson
Avoid like the plague

Stayed here for our wedding night. Total waste of money. I ask for the most expensive room (got to for your wedding night) and was very dissapointed. Staff were thin on the ground, rude and unhelpful. Despite asking for help taking our cases to our room my bride and I were left to struggle up 2 flights of stairs!!! Room was large but looked tired. To be fair it was clean and the bathroom was very large although had not been updated since the 70's Breakfast was weird. No-one told us what to do and after looking for a spare seat for 10 mins we realised that you needed to serve your own food in the corridor!!! To top it off a number of our guests stayed as well. My sister upon arriving was told that there was no room avaliable. I belive the reason was that the hotel was holding a wedding itself and that some of the guests for it had decided to stay so my guests were booted out. I will not be returning to this disaster of a hotel and hope that you do not have the misfortune either. Shame on them for marking our first day of wedded bliss!!!
what a nightmare

this is probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in either in UK or overseas. We were there for a wedding, the bridal couple and family and friends were booked there, although when the bride's mother and father arrived to check in there was no room for them. Thankfully after a lot of complaing and raised voices they managed to find something for them. There is hardly any parking, the rooms are dirty, (the pillowslips had black marks all over them) small and badly lit. The bathroom was like a tomb and the toiletries were of the cheapest quality. Rather than risk having a bath we opted for a shower which alternated between scalding hot and freezing cold. But the absolute worst thing was the Scottish chap in the reception office who was so appallingly rude! This is a real shame as there is so much potential here in this lovely old building with lots of original features. My suggestion is to fire the lot of them and start again!

My boyfriend and I stayed at this Hotel for 2 nights, we paid 200 pounds for 2 nights and breakfast was included. When booking the hotel the rooms in the pictures looked very big and spacious. The decor wasn’t brilliant, but the big room sold it to us. The room we had as far different, it was very small and the bathroom was tiny. After we got over the shock of the small room we noticed the mounds of dust all over the room. The ceiling light fitting was covered; it looked as though it hadn’t been cleaned for months. Also the shower water kept going from boiling hot to freezing cold while I was showering. The check in staff couldn’t have been more miserable. They had an attitude as though they were doing us a favour by letting us stay at their hotel. They were very unhelpful and rude. To conclude, the hotel was over priced for what it was, the hotel itself was ok and very traditional looking, but the rooms were very shabby. On a positive note, the breakfast was very good, a proper full English which was yummy. I wouldn’t stay here again; there are many other hotels nearer to town, which seems nicer and cheaper.
OK for one night

This is a great place to stay if you need a room for one night and there is no where else. Free breakfast but thats it. Decent location.
Okay room... shame about the service!

The rooms are okay, shabby with some broken fixtures and fittings. However the major problem for this hotel appears to be it's (lack of) customer service. Our first issue was with the unkempt waiting staff when we could track them down and the breakfast room that was full of tables containing dirty plates and cups. The lack of staff around meant that it was a case of throwing together what we could find in the room for a place setting and hoping for the best. This however was surpassed by the attitude of the reception staff to our comments regarding the substandard situation at breakfast, who dismissed our complaints with a 'you should have told us' and whilst paying for the room on my switch card, the member of staff began serving the man behind me in the queue. Recompense of £9 of the bill was offered begrudingly, but sadly no apology!! Avoid at all costs!
This hotel is a very old building, which travelodge have tried to make their own - and failed! I read the reviews and was worried about what to expect, but figured for a bargain of £9 a night - I could at least enjoy a weekend of sleep away from my kids! I was not... more
