When I arrived at my room, there was no toilet paper, soap, use an old lay on the sink edge, tooth brush glasses were dirty and the tables were sticky and blotchy ... The refrigerator was empty. Buy water with you. Only one French channel on TV. Cleaning staff and the woman at reception was bland!

On arriving at Riad Amssafah my heart sank seeing its entrance through the archway with heavy wooden door. Our taxi driver knocked on the door and we were ushered in, it was so large and light and airy and 100% traditional moroccan. Staff very pleasant and friendly, our... more

After reading too many reviews, we were expecting a black hole. Getting there was a bit stressful but once in, it was like a little haven. The rooms are very traditional, huge double bed, small bathroom, but that's all you need. They have a very nosey cat, who liked to... more

Don't miss this place!!! Riad Amssafah was an amazing place to stay in Marrakech! My mother, who is older, and I stayed at the riad for 3 nights while in Morroco. The staff, food, architecture, and rooms were comfortable, quaint, and impressive. There was always a new room... more

Our first visit to Marrakech was an amazing experience. We are both retired in our sixties and not used to standardised city 4 and 5 star hotels. We went with an open mind, our son told us we would be out of our comfort zone and as we approached our accomodation we realised... more

We found this a fantastic place to stay the rooms are palatial if you pay a little extra (i.e. for a suite) and the staff were always happy to assist. We went low season in February and found that the Riad was a great place to stay and definitely value for money - loved... more

The position of the hotel was spot on. It forces you to explore the Soukes in the heart of the Medina in Marrakech, because that's where it's positioned - right in the middle. It was a bit daunting at 7.30pm on our first night walking through the Soukes but we had a guide. ... more

just ok, not best value for money
Stayed here for four nights having booked a suite on lastminute.com. For suite read a largish but very basically furnished room, though clean and serviced well daily. The location had its good and bad points. I enjoyed being amongst the husstle of Medina life but finding our way back proved difficult, esp at night, and the number of "guides" hounding you was a pain, even had one spit at me when it was clear I was not going to pay him for taking me away from the direction i should have been going in the first place. The riad was quite relaxing and nicely furnished though definatley not a four star as advertised on lastminute. Breakfast was good, though left one morning without eating having waited thirty minutes to be served. The family who run the riad were friendly and helpful, but wouldnt choose to stay here again there are much better riads around.
Friendly family run hotel
We have just spent a week in the Riad Amssaffah. The rooms were clean and well maintained. The atmosphere was wonderfully calm, a real oasis after the frenetic pace of the souks and Jemaa el fna. There is plenty of space for guests to lounge around in the courtyard area without disturbing each other. The evening menu is a little limited (as are most, when it comes to Moroccan dishes) but what they cook, they do well. They also serve alcohol, which is more than some local restaurants do. The hotel staff were able to provide useful information about where to go and what to do. If you like your sleep to be undisturbed, you may tire of the early morning call to prayer. There are quite a few mosques in the old town so there is no escaping it. But it all adds to the atmosphere. The other downside is that they charge DH300 each way for transfers to and from the airport, which is quite steep considering it only takes 15 minutes and we could probably have taken the same trip in a cab for about DH30. But with 2 children and flights at unsociable hours we didn't have much choice.
Useful tips
Riad Amssaffah: - basic facilities but very clean (bedlinen and towels changed daily), pancakes and bread, fresh orange and coffee for breakfast. Comfy beds. - location in the depths of the Northern souks. Possible to learn the route through during the day but at night is a different story with no open shops for landmarks and some of the market gates closed so you need to reroute. Ask for a guide (there are plenty of young boys looking to assist for a few dirham) - note taxis at night charge double what you pay in the day. (20 dirham from jemaa el fna by day) - the hotel hires a car service to do pick ups (It's not the hotel's car). We had no problem with our pick up - the driver waited an hour and a half for us - but we overheard some people who had been left stranded. If you fail to book a car in advance or it doesn't show, just get a cab from the airport to Jemaa el Fna and then take another local cab to the Riad. - the manageress is fantastic at getting rid of loiterers following you home. She simultaneously resolved disputes for us with taxi driver and another guest who'd been followed home and was confused why the guy was asking for money.
Loved It
The Riad is stunning and the staff could not be more helpful. Even though it was the middle of Ramadan they still bent over backwards to help. There is also a fantastic view of the city from the roof terrace. If you take an objective view the Riad is fantastic, Marrakech is a crazy place and you cant blame this great little riad for anything that might happen on the way there!! One thing I would say is before venturing out get the staff to organise someone to show you the easiest route to the Jemaa El Fna, all the maps are useless!
Escape from the madding crowds :)
We stayed here for 6 nights in October 2006 and once we'd found the place, we loved it! All of the staff were great, really accommodating and welcoming and coming back to the riad after being in the medina was bliss! Would recommend this riad to anybody looking for a central location in the busy medina, within 10 mins walk of the main square (if you can find your way there along the twisty, windy lanes) and a lovely setting. Enjoy!
Terrible experience
We booked this Riad on the strength of reviews here - we've never been let down before! On arrival, our airport pick-up had left before we arrived (we'd been delayed), so the hotel immediately gave us a lot of grief for being delayed! Not a good start... We were then shown to our room, where the A/C did not work (vital in 35 degree heat). Moved to another (dirty) room, with 2 singles (we're married, and like to share 1 bed), broken lamp, and broken electrical socket. Thankfully, these things were remedied within a couple of hours, but once again, the A/C didn't work. After 2 technicians came to fix it, the hotel claimed it to be fixed, but the room never got below a stifling 30 degrees. The next day, we asked the hotel rep to be moved. The Riad refused to refund us for the 3 nights that we weren't to be staying, and hurled much abuse at us. This hotel is NOT 4* as claimed, is very shabby inside, and nowhere near a patch on many of the other refurbished riads. We ended up decamping to the Sofitel, which was fantastic, and comes highly recommended - a much more relaxing holiday ensued.
Mixed experience
Our four-night stay got off to a bad start, after our flight was delayed for over two hours and the booked hotel transfer didn't materialise. Arriving by taxi (150 dirhams) late in the evening, we were given a poky little room (no others available) with no fridge - not at all what was advertised, and which we'd paid for (through a Times offer) months before. The welcoming "Moroccan hospitality" (sickeningly sweet mint tea and dry pastries) is best avoided. After making a fuss on the following morning we were given a much more comfortable room, though still quite small, with a TV providing BBC news (but no other foreign channels). Public areas, including a roof terrace where we relaxed in the evening exchaging experiences with agreeable fellow travellers, are comfortable, and the place does feel like an oasis of calm amid all the hassle and confusion of the souks. Breakfast was poor (coffee, orange juice, dry bread and processed cheese), but dinner (tagines etc) surprisingly good. Staff (especially Karima, who speaks quite good English) were friendly and helpful, but service was VERY slow (perhaps partly attributable to Ramadan). Overall, despite the glowing reviews below I think you could probably do better elsewhere, even if this means spending a little more.
An welcome oasis within the the madness of the mdina
My friend and I booked a brief stay at the Riad Amassaffah at the begining of September, basically I was treating myself for my 40th birthday. The Riad is extremely well kept and a very welcome oasis within the madness of the Mdina. We arranged a transfer from the airport to the Riad with Karima. Picked up no problem. The room was superb, the staff are very friendly. I even had a hand drawn card, a plate of biscuits and a beautiful bunch of roses put in my room on my birthday - a lovely touch. There were building works going on, but I must say it is all pretty much finished, just decoration and furnishing all the heavy work has been long done and it was not off putting at all. The food in the Riad is good, although a little basic, it's very filling. I would recommend if I should be so bold, Le Foundouk, it is only about a 5-10 minute walk from the Riad and the food, the atmosphere, the staff are superb and the price is that much different to the food in the Riad!! Ask Karima and she will point you in the right direction, the door men will even walk you back after your meal. Hire a guide to show you through the Souke it is well worth it, I'd recommend a guy called Ali he is very good and I am sure the girls at the Riad will be able to put you in touch. The kids on the streets will try and lead you to the main square, follow the map Karima will happily draw for you it looks basic but sure as hell works. I will return to Marakesh and I will certainly stay at the Riad Amssaffah!
i cried on leaving
if there is anywhere better to stay in the medina , i'd like to know. it truly feels like ive got family there now! The food was the best in Marrakesh. Afternooon by the small pool the children taught us Arabic, while we taught them English. then in the evening Karima, one of the famous sisters, adressed my predjudices about Islam and preconceived ideas about North Africa. To leave a country with a more open mind and a change of heart is a most wonderful gift This riad is an oasis in the madness of the Medina, a little haven where stress gets left at the door. Unforgettable
a real taste of Marrakech
I visited Marrakech in May with my partner and stayed at the Riad Amssaffah for 5 nights. We had the most amazing time and met the most amazing people. The Riad owners were a really friendly pair of sisters and their family. They helped us with everything, including booking taxi's, restaurants, they drew us maps everyday to the local sights and to the big place . They also reccommended a fantastic restuarant to us, Le Foundak- it is amazing, the best restaurant we visited by far. For a fun day out by a pool, go to Sunset Club- it is out of this world!! Our hotel room was lovely, but to be fair we were hardly in it. There is so much to do and see and with the advise and help from the owners, we really feel that we made the most out of our short stay.
