Aug 2011, sun & shade

On arrival, we were amazed by the stunning, cliff-side location. We were greeted by friendly staff, who were prompt at allocating our room. The rooms, although a little dated, seemed clean and had reasonable facilities. Our first disappointment came when we went down... more

Excellent Choice!!!!!
This is my 3rd visit to this hotel and I always enjoyed the wonderful views, the quiet location, the friendly staff, and excellent choice of food, all this for a very fair price. The bedrooms are very clean and well furnished; the mini bar is use like fridge because this is a “all inclusive” hotel; the relaxing atmosphere of this hotel reflects up on the guest who visit this hotel, who are looking for a quiet hotel far away from the noisy city of Funchal.
Monte Mar Palace a 4* Hotel?
I have been in Monte Mar Palace Hotel with my family (my wife and my daughters of 4 and 8 years old) for a short break (4 nights). I booked the room – a suite – by phone, directly to the hotel desk and we paid 137.5 Euros/night (BB). The hotel is very well located with a magnificent sea and mountain view and a beautiful sunshine. The rooms have a lot of space and our suite was really impressive. The common areas and the pools are also good enough for the number of guests but need some improvements (are far from being magnificent).... more
Stunning location
Disappointed with the food - please can someone teach the Portuguese to cook vegetables properly? Gordon or Jamie perhaps. It's the same on mainland Portugal, they always boil the stuffing out of the greens! I wouldn't rate this as a 4 star hotel. Staff were very helpful and rooms were clean. We did enjoy ourselves but wouldn't go back to this hotel. They could do with a little shop selling sun cream, gifts, newspapers etc. etc. Loads of Saga guests, Germans, French equivalent of Saga, Dutch - you name it they were there!
a bit isolated
Ourselves and two of our friends have just returned from a week at the Monte Mar Hotel and although we booked with SAGA - (Sex and Games for the Aged) - we are all at the 'younger' end of the scale! The hotel was fine, very clean, nice rooms, good beauty spa, average indoor pool and adequate food. The staff were lovely and very helpful but the owner walks around looking permanently miserable and if he wishes to continue receiving guests at his hotel he needs to lighten up a bit. This hotel is very isolated and you have to... more
Mostly Saga
We thought the food was OK! The service was excellent. We did feel rather overwhelmed by all the Saga holidaymakers though. Staff were very friendly. Mattress was too firm for me though.
Lost its Good Food award from saga
We were all set up to go following favourable reports here and that the hotel had a Good Food award from saga. within a week of booking, received latest brochure from Saga and award was missing. In the end, unable to get a satisfactory reply from Saga, we changed to the Regency Palace near Funchal, but lost full board and it costs £300 more! Please keep this list posted on the food at the Monte Mar. johnep NB we have had two hols this year where food was disappointing at Cavaleri Malta and Marriott York,... more
Love the Hotel and the Island
We were concerned about the reviews on the site and somewhat apprehensive about staying at the Montemar. Our reservations were totally unfounded. Apart from the fact that we were the only British people staying in the hotel, we could not fault our holiday. The staff were extremely helpful and very welcoming. The facilities were excellent - apart from the gym! In fact we were there for five days before any children were in the hotel, which as a forty something, suited me down to the ground. The food was excellent and I think I have now... more
Good Staff
Our visit in June 2006 lasted for two weeks. Mostly cloudy but this is normal for the time of year. Hotel was good but the food although very nice was a tad boring as the choices limited ie only one potato type each meal, if you didn't like the offer then tough. The wine offered was the same each meal so it endend up tasting like soap. The staff were faultless. The indoor and outdoor pools were fine as were all the facilities. The outdoor lights were not turned on but after a compaint an electrician looked at them and then some were turned... more
Some of us are younger!
I stayed in the Montemar Palace last December , thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and have booked for a longer holiday this year. The hotel enjoys splendid views in all directions, is very well kept and has a staff who cannot do enough for you. There are interesting walks, around the levadas, the village, and even a climb up the "mountain."The hotel has it's own minibus, which goes into Sao Vincenti and Funchal at certain times (for the fabulous Christmas lights, for example) There are fitness facilities and a large indoor pool. The community in... more
Don't Go There if you're under 70!
The Monte Mar Palace is in Ponta Delgada on the North West coast of Madeira. The village is notable for a newly-built lido - part of the effort to promote the North of the island - but little else. There are few shops or other facilities. The hotel is a large fairly modern building on a cliff-top with good views along the coast. It has 104 rooms and is clearly a favourite with Saga, the UK over-50's holiday company. There is a large restaurant and an adjacent bar, with a further bar on the floor above which was closed during our visit.... more
