Sunny Beach has good weather, but not really much else ... NOT A FAMILY RESORT, aiming for Spain and Greece's 18-30 market although Nessebar which was next door was a more pleasant and better proposition. Also told that this place was cheap, it probably is away from Sunny Beach area but around there you are charged for everything, we booked this over a year ago and paid in total at least £5000 including the holiday and all other costs associated with it and we had had enough after 3 days not a vast amount for kids to do, Balkan Holidays after we read reviews for them we feared the worst but they are an exceptional company, the rep being very helpful with any problems, and although we did not enjoy and will not return to Sunny Beach we would travel with Balkan again.

It was our first visit to Bulgaria...

Jun 2008, Mrs S Tobin

It was our first visit to Bulgaria and we were very impressed and liked the place very much we made a good choice with the hotel as it is in a great location in between sunny beach main resort and nessabar within walking distance to a lovely beach about 5-10 mins and lots of resturants to choose from food in resturants very good would recomend Memory - Karolina and Auroa.
We had B&B which was basic but sufficiant as was the hotel and very clean.
Down side be careful of villians in old town Nessabar trying to sell you doggy LEV they say they are giving you more to the pound and want you to change your sterling with them however if you do you cannot spend it as it is old money we did not get caught in this trap however lots of people did especially the welsh so be careful other that that the country is well worth a visit.

We went to the Aktinia with 10 of my family ranging to 1 yr to 37yrs old. When I booked the holiday I was searching the net for latest reviews, the only one was 2yrs old.
When we arrived we got a family room which was spacious and clean with 2 balconies. We thought great first impressions, however the balconies had large gaps which my 22mnth old could easily get through even though we was on 1st floor we had to leave the door shut.
My sister was on 3rd and her 1yr old daughter was caged in too. The main balcony also had the air conditioning unit on it taking up at least a third of the space and when switched on was so hot you would have burned easily if you touched it.
The staff was awful, not even a smile, and made all the guests uncomfortable but the maids were lovely and pleasant. Our meals were very repetitive and the youngest wouldn't eat at all the breakfasts were eggs-scrambled-fried-boiled, nice for a few days but 2 weeks? We didn't see any veg at all only cucumber, it was fries with chicken or chicken with fries.
There was no entertainment at all only the maid’s morning smiles.
On our 14th day we were all ready to go home and as it was the last week of opening all the guests were ready too, the staff even packed the sun beds up around us.
Sunny beach is lovely but other guests promised to write reviews of the Aktinia as we all felt the same. We met some lovely people staying there and none would go back to this hotel. They need lessons in being polite and cheerful and a health and safety course before a child falls through the balconies.

The Hotel Aktinia is situated in the...

Jul 2007, Mr D Ottley

The Hotel Aktinia is situated in the first block of properties immediately behind the sand dunes behind the glorious white sandy beach and shallow, warm (at the time of our visit) Black Sea.
It is located to the south of the resort while still part of the town, and as such is in a much quieter area than hotels further into the centre of the resort. The hotel faces away from the beach with a parking street in front and the main resort road behind that. Car parking in the parking street costs 5Lev per day from the hotel. You need a magnetic pass from the hotel first, which makes initial arrival difficult as you have to rely on security in order to gain admittance.
There is a taxi rank in front of the hotel in that same street, and the resort road train, which runs from the resort centre to beautiful Nessebar and back, stops immediately outside the hotel and costs only 2Lev per single journey. Bus stops are in the main road behind this road. All rooms face the front of the hotel, overlooking the outdoor dining area and the pool.
The hotel is spotless, and the maids and cleaners were seen working night and day keeping the Hotel so. All the hotel staff, without exception, were friendly, efficient, and courteous.
The pool did not seem to have a filter system except when the bar staff put on the fountain for the odd 30 minutes or so. There is an outdoor bar by the pool as well as one inside. The pool had no bars on which to hold when entering the water and some elderly people found this a problem. There are no steps into the children’s area and a child would have to enter the water directly from the poolside. Each pool area has its own same depth in all areas. The children's pool seemed rather deep for younger children and babies.
Safety deposit boxes are available at a reasonable cost and are recommended.
The one and only disadvantage of this hotel was the food. Everyone found it a complete let down and most, like ourselves, started to eat out, especially at the little bar immediately next door which offered lovely food at inexpensive prices. The couple playing in this bar each evening were also extremely entertaining.
The air conditioning was a must and worked excellently in our room, though it stopped automatically should you open the balcony door or take your door key from its slot. However we found that a playing card kept things going if you took the door key away!!
We would definitely return to this hotel again for its location, cleanliness, and friendliness, but we would only ever book bed and breakfast, and then eat out. We would further barricade our door at night as we felt obliged to, given the alleged break in. This may have been over reacting but we felt safer that way after the news was leaked.
Overall a good value hotel but be prepared to eat elsewhere. Saying this though, guests in other hotels also reported poor food in the included deal but better when bought a la carte e.g. the Aktinia's pizzas were terrific when paid for a la carte.

My wife and I have just returned...
5 / 10
Sep 2006, Mr J Thompson

My wife and I have just returned (9/9/06) from a 15 night stay at the Aktinia.....the hotel is spotlessly clean, the rooms large and spacious, the air conditioning works, the staff are wonderful and have an excellent command of English, each and every one of the staff are very friendly and helpful.
The lobby bar is open 24 hours a day, restaurant 8 am to midnight, pool bar 10 am till no-one wants serving. The pool is not very big but you don't spend two weeks in a pool (usually).
The main gripes about the Aktinia are it's location, it's about 2 miles or a good 45 minute walk from the centre of the resort or you can catch the little train that stops right outside the door and 15 minutes and 2 lev later you're in town, failing that you can use the taxis that park outside, a word of warning though, Always negotiate the fare before getting in, our first taxi ride into the town cost us 25 lev, later trips cost between 11 and 14 lev, same trip, different drivers.

Secondly, the food, it's not that the food is bad, apparently Bulgarian people don't like their food as hot as we do (so we were told) so food is served somewhere between tepid and body temperature apart from a couple of days when we had soup that would have given the tiles on the space shuttle a run for their money and a vegetable stew that was hot enough to take the enamel off a Belfast sink.
It's a bit of a shame really because some of the local dishes that we were served were very nice if they had been hot they would have been delicious. I think that the hotel caters mainly for German visitors, looking at the food that was served for breakfast and dinner, but I think that most of us can live with that.
Entertainment is sadly lacking, we had a local duo consisting of a male keyboard player and a really gorgeous girl vocalist, good voice and entertaining.........every night, same songs, different order..once was fun, twice was amusing and it went rapidly down hill after that. There are very few local bars, all the residents at the local hotels seemed to head into the main resort at about 8.30pm and use their hotels for a last drink before falling into bed.
Overall we had a great holiday in a lovely country, met some great people, found some good restaurants and bars. If you stay at the Atkinia be prepared to travel and take some really good insect repellent, the mozzies are insatiable.....mind you that's not the fault of the hotel. Oh, and be nice to the staff, they are a credit to the hotel.
