fantastic
from bullmeisterg
we stayed at the marinha dourada from 2 weeks from the 25th nov to the 9th of december and had a truly fantastic time.. when we arrived in the early hours of the morning we passed other hotels and thanked god that the marinha dourada was our stop as some of the other hotels did'nt look all that nice..the hotel rooms are spacious and not the most modern but very nice indeed. they have a mini bar and small kitchenette area(basic worktop and sink) and are very clean..we found although the hotel is still very cheap compared with england it is quite a bit more expensive than all the other quality bars restaraunts around..we went to a gala evening on our first night which was quite good and had a buffet meal..it was at this point we realised that we would not be using the restaraunt as an option for the rest of our stay. mandrem, ashwem and candolim beaches are the ones we used regular and are all fantastic. get in a cab outside the hotel and for approx a tenner the cab will take you to mandrem and wait all day to bring you home again..(we used a driver for the whole of our holiday called arjun he was quality).. restaraunts that we would highly recommend are brittos(not an english pie and chip gaff) east meets west ,after 8 and our favourite was souymens kitchen(absolutely fantastic food camembert souffle, fillet steak and chocolate mousse are to die for and all freshly preparedby the near michelin star quality former pno cruise liner chef) this is a small cab ride away in candolim..we spent 800 quid for 2 of us for 2 weeks and lived like kings.we had shirts and trousers made by tailors and bought quality souvenirs. dont take any toiletrys with you or ciggies buy them all there as they are half the price and ciggies are a tenner for 200..if you want to hire a scooter then get international on your driver slicence.have a great time and i am defo going back
Loved it - I want to go back!!

Stayed here from 10th Nov - 24th Nov and really pleased when we pulled up at the front, compared some others we had passed. The rooms were large and spacious with a TV and large fridge. The mini bar items were generally inexpensive with a beer costing no more than a pound (only slightly above average). The staff were very curteous and the room was cleaned every day. Initially had no hot water but somone came and sorted it straight away. Aircon not too noisy and a ceiling fan. The lunches got a bit bland if you stayed around the hotel, but the Goan food was great. There were 3 or 4 restaurants within walking distance. All spice, Saffron Court, and Starlight. All served similar food and All Spice being favourite. Saffron Court nicer surroundings. The guys on the gate had a list of prices that the taxis drivers would charge to and from locations, so you wouldn't get ripped off. Many trips could be done easily and cheaply independently with one of the drivers. The Lila cafe on the other side of the bridge was a great place for lunch. Baga and Calangute both within easy travelling distance for greater options for shopping and eating. The grounds of the hotel were very well maintained with a couple of bars. Every other night they would have some kind of special dinner between the lakes with entertainment. The Silk Home tailors on Tito's road in Baga were great. Had 2 gent's shirts and 2 ladies trousers made in Thai silk for £10 each. Shilpa was not pushy and much cheaper than the hotel and travel agents recomendations. Her brother aklso owned the leather shop next door and they can make clothes up in your size from a photo of a style. Will go back for a leather jacket next time! Dental work and optical treatment are very good value and about 10% (dental) of UK prices. It's worth considering taking a bit of extra cash to have something done. Ther was some building work taking place behind one section of accomodation, but bearing in mind they don't have power tools and just a couple of hammers, you really won't be disturbed. Really loved Goa and this hotel was great for first timers.
Value for money

Stayed here from 11th - 25th Nov. Hotel above average. Rooms very basic but adequate. Bathroom needs a bit of updating but no great problems. All hotel staff were very accomodating and would do anything to please. Prices in hotel very reasonable for food or drink. We only used the hotel really as a base and it met with our requirements. Would definately stay here again. Lovely views from every room, very peaceful and quiet but close enough to the hustle and bustle of baga. Nice pleasant walk to the beach or you can use the hotel bus or just get a taxi cheap enough. The best restaurants that we ate in were East meets West and All Spice, The 1st one being my favourite. The only place we didnt enjoy was Sublime (baga bridge) Food was terrible. The staff were very nice but would not recommend eating there. You cannot beat the beach shacks for food. We had ice in our drinks, ate the salads, not once were any of us ill. Main beach shack we frequented was Laxmans(same as last year)and still as good. The Goan people are very friendly and will make your stay an unforgettable one. Enjoy .

We stayed at the Marinha Dourada from 9th to the 24th April 07. The hotel complex was nice, we had a lake view room. Breakfast was very simple eggs, beans and toast every day, fruit was extra. We ate out a lot at local restaurants near the hotel our faviorates were "All spice" and "Saffron Court" (all 5 min walk from hotel) the menu's had a lot more to offer then the restaurant at the hotel and a lot more reasonably priced. The first week at the hotel was nice we went to Baga beach, which was very touristy, busy and the beach had quite a lot of litter/cigerettes on it so not very good for small children, Anjuna beach was very quietapart from a few local kids fishing. We went shopping in Panjim would reccomend Shere Punjab restaurant (Air Conditioned) clean and good food. Mapusa was excellent for shopping, but avoid market day (Friday). We shopped there three times during our stay there is minimal harrasment as the locals shop there so its not very touristy at all. At the start of the second week of our stay the hotel had a large conference group staying , our room was just above reception (103) for a couple of hours there was a lot of noise with the guests checking in. My 3 year old daughter and I went to breakfast whilst my husand was in the room, a guest walked into the room looked around the room and walked back out, then we had people turning the door handle a couple of times, the door was locked! it was the conference guests, I complained to the reception staff who said it would not happen again, it didnt. For 3 days there was a tray with tea, stale milk, drinks bottles left lying on the corner of the stairs by our room eventually this was removed a day after we told the reception staff. Once the conference guests had left then another large party had arrived and again we were shifted to the smaller breakfast area where the toaster did not work and the juice was warm. Not sure whether it was just the time of year we visited Goa but it seemed like the conference/business guests were treated better then their other guests.
full of kids
from komombo
We returned to this hotel after four years because of the location and the fact that it was a lovely quiet and friendly place, with mainly adults because there is really nothing for the kids to do. Now it has changed, it is now overun with kids, people banging doors all night (we complained three times but nothing was done) and it is in the middle of lots of building work,(thomsons told us it was minimal) dont trust a travel company to tell the truth !! the breackfast was an experience to, sitting in a barn housing the tennis court and the choice was terrible. Its a pity because this was a good hotel but has now been spoilt. Also baga beach has become bad we even saw fighting one day a place to keep away from. If you are going to Goa try the south which is quieter and enjoy the real goa.
Wont be going back

we arrived at the Marinha Dourada 05/04/07. Having been before the first week was paradise. However this did not last as the second week they had a conference for sprayers and dusters .At breakfast we wernt allowed in where we usually had breakfast, but had to use the balcony instead. Anyone who has been before will know how small it is. Guests had to wait for a table. they had also removed the comfy chairs and gave us the plastic ones. Myself, husband and brother-in-law go the same time every year as our anniversaries fall during this time. We were hassled at breakfast to book for a party evening they were having. Which was actually on our anniversary. As we were going out for the day we thought it would be nice .We wouldnt have to go out in the evening so we booked. When we arrived between the lakes for the party it had been cancelled. The conferfnce had the party instead and we wernt told untill we got there, just glad we didnt go and sit at one of the tables as we would have been asked to leave. Things just went downhill from there trays with congealed milk sugar tea and coffie were left laying outside rooms for days. We had to keep asking staff to remove them by which time they were covered in bugs. The noise at the annex pool was horrendous as they were using microphones and demonstrating machinery during the day between the lakes. But the worst was after they had finished for the day they would sit by the pool and take photos of sunbathers. A lot of people were complaining how thiongs had changed. This conference went and another large group arrived the night before we left. It was the first time i have ever been ready to come home before my holiday ended. We were treat like second class and i am afraid we will not be returning to the Marinha Dourada. As for Baga beach hoards of men taking photos of bathers even coming right up to the bottom of the sunbed. We were amazed there had not been any trouble even the girls selling sarrongs were shouting at them. Its only a matter of time untill someones husband or boyfreind cicks off. In our opinion this will be the downfall of Goa
Mixed Feelings
from JohnAndYvonne
My wife and I have just returned from a week at the Marinha Dourada and we have mixed feelings about the place. The first impressions of Goa (at the airport) do not get things off to a good start. The porters who insist on taking your bags to the buses demand as much money as they can get. We were told that a £1 coin would be gratefully accepted. This wasn’t the case, as the guys we had actually asked for more ! Also, while waiting for the bus to fill up we couldn’t help noticing the garbage strewn in the wasteland beside the car park. Dogs were scavenging in it and a rather feeble looking cow was standing in the middle of it. The journey to the hotel was enlightening, as we saw the poverty first hand. The bus driver seemed to have a death wish (over the week we were in Goa we realised that he was one of the good drivers). We arrived at the hotel at about 9am and after a short delay were taken to our room. We were quite disappointed because it was quite basic. The bathroom wasn’t very clean, and a really big thing was made of the fact that our toilet flushed (but don’t put the toilet paper in it) ! We decided to sleep for a few hours and then go for a walk. The sleep helped, and we awoke with renewed optimism about the place. We walked to Baga beach where we were harassed constantly by the people running the shacks, the beggars and other low-lifes. This was our one and only visit to the beach. We returned to the hotel, where we found that the bar staff were very friendly and we enjoyed the rest of the day. We spent the rest of the week mainly within the hotel grounds during the day (except for breakfast because the hotels ‘offering’ was appalling). For breakfast we got into the habit of going across the road to Mo-Jos, which offered simple cooked breakfasts at very reasonable prices (it’s better than it looks). In the evenings, we went to various restaurants, including ‘Fiesta’ and ‘East meets West’, which was by far the best available. The food was superb and while expensive for Goa was cheap compared to the UK. As an example, on our last night we had Chateaubriand with veg & potatoes (£6) and a bottle of wine (£9). This was excellent value and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Ali and the other waiters kept as amused with their magic tricks. The locals in Goa were very friendly and couldn’t do enough to help you. Our verdict was that we probably won’t go back to Goa, it just wasn’t our idea of a holiday. It was made worse by the fact that we both suffered from ‘Delhi Belly’ during and after the trip. If however, we were to return to Goa (Baga beach area), we would definitely stay at the Marinha Dourada, as it was by far the best in the area. One thing that we must say in fairness is that our feelings about it seemed to be in the minority, and that most people thought it was great & were happily talking about returning.
Fantastic Place, Fantastic People.

We have been to goa and the baga/arpora region for the past six years, and of all the hotels this is by far the best. The rooms are spacious and have loads of storage space. The views from the balconies are amazing. We were advised that there was building work going on behind the hotel but we didn't hear a sound. The staff are fantastic, very helpful and always polite. The closest beach is baga beach, which is where we spent a lot of our time. Our favourite beach shack is the silversands. The boys who work there are worth their weight in gold. Especially Sammy and jon. We also ate at britto's and the have a really good desert menu. Other places we would reconmend to eat are fiesta, all spice and east meets west. We will be going back again next and staying at the marinha dourada, it is superb.
By far exceeded expectations

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks at the begining of December as part of a wedding party of around 26 people. If it wasn't for the wedding it would have been very unlikelly that we would have ever fancied a holiday in Goa, when we were asked to go to Goa we were abit apprehensive at first but by the end of the first day any worries i had disappeared. The hotel iteslf is quite large, rooms were nice, a little basic if anything but it had everything we required and it wasn't like we stayed in the room much anyway. Both pools were very nice too and never too busy. The gounds in which the hotel was set in was also lovely with lovely views over the lake. Apart from the pools the hotel had little esle in the way of facilities, there was a tennis court but this was used as a breakfast hall so was out of use. All the staff were very friendly and would do anything to help. Staff at the bars good also. The best thing about this holiday though was how cheap it was, two of you could go out for a meal on an evening and eat like kings. There were many nice restaurants to chose from in Baga, many serving a wide veriaty of food (not just indian food). The beaches in Goa are also amazing and well worth the trip out. All in all this was a fantastic holiday and as a result i am sure i will end up back in Goa in the future some time to see the places that we didn't get to visit that we would of liked to.
Nice setting
from CNS-Scot
My husband and I stayed at the Marinha Dourada in Feb 07 for 2 weeks. A note of caution - those who have said that this 2 star hotel "ought to be a 5 star!!" are perhaps comparing it to a 2 star self-catering in Benidorm. Our brochure rated it as a 2 star plus and as an international hotel, I would say that is about right. (We found when we got there that people had exaggerated, or perhaps over-enthused, about quite a few things about Goa!) Having said that, we have nothing bad to say about the hotel. The rooms are basic but have a TV with 2 or 3 English speaking movie channels and a regularly stocked mini bar, 2 single beds and a wardrobe. Extras like tea/coffee facilities, hairdryer etc and other special little touches of an international 5 star hotels are missing and that is why I would call it 2 star plus. The bathroom is also quite basic but the rooms are cleaned every day, the communal areas and pool are cleaned regularly and to be honest there is nothing in particular to fault about this hotel. We are led to believe that by Goan standards it is one of the best. The breakfast is farily plain and bland - eggs and toast - but more than adequate. On the few occassions we dined at the hotel we did not find the food anywhere near as good as restuarants we ate at. The staff are all very helpful and friendly which helped make it a pleasant place to stay. The setting of the hotel is absolutely lovely, looking out over 2 lakes. I know there is building work going on at the moment but we were not anywhere near that. However, we met several people who stayed in the annexe next to the building work and heard no complaints about it. We had emailed the hotel beforehand and asked to be away from the building work and this request was granted. If you are concerned, you should ask for a room above the restaurant - it is away from the building work but still has a lovely outlook over one of the lakes. In summary, if and when we return to Goa, we would definitely re-book the Marinha Dourada rather than trying any other hotel and we would certainly recommend it to anyone else travelling to Goa.
Its a 3 star and thats it. Good enough for it, excellent grounds 2 pools, basic clean room with cheap mini bar and aircon
