Not what I was expecting from a family holiday village.
3 / 10
Jan 2011, Nick1

We visited the holiday village at the end of September and we had rain 4 days out of 7. In bad weather there was nothing to do in that resort. Also when it rained the marble floors are a real danger, they were very very slippery, My children fell down several times. First Choice entertainner really miserable All inclusive meals not good at all, a LOT of soups (water and colour) and salads, and wattered drinks. Such a hard beds. My 10 year old son was expected to sleep on the sofa in the living room. Can Picafort itself is very german oriented (with the exceptionn of Son baulo area) but clean and not as commercial as Alcudia. The beach is lovely and the sea is clean and lovely and warm,. The pool in the hotel was frozen and my son had blue lips within minuets of going in. It took us more than 20 minutes walking with the children to reach the beach. All in all not fantastic as it is sold to you and make sure you go when you are garenteed the weather as there is absolutly nothing to do if no sun ,

The hotel and the food where quite good but the hotel was over-run with families and there was no entertainment for any one over 10 years old, apart from bingo every evening and then you couldn't get a seat in the entertainment area. If you went outside you had to be amongst smokers. Poorly run. Wouldn't go back if you paid me.

  • Advice: Leave it alone
  • Activities: Alcudia
  • Good For: Beach

Location
========
Hotel was a little difficult to find, but partly my fault for not researching the exact location enough. Once you are there it is away from noisy-ness as it is in a suburb area, but still only a 5 minute walk from the main strip and the beach. Lovely sandy beach - sea nice. Town was quiet in October - which was good.
Several supermarkets in town area...Mercadona good.
Hotel Facilities
================
Gardens are lovely as are the pools and the childrens pool is good too. There is also a separate over 18's pool which was a good idea. Lots of sun beds although in October there were very few used....not sure what it is like in the summer. Pool side snack bar was nice but closed in October....not a problem as bar area was open.
Sports facilities good, but also a childrens play area which had a bouncy castle and a trampoline. Two table tennis tables and two pool tables. Indoor swimming pool, although small, was useful in October. There is also a sauna, jacuzzi and gym, but we did not use these.
Nice hotel food...buffet style although pricy due to current exchange rate.
Good bar and kids entertainment.
Car park is free.
Room
====
Well decorated and clean. Good bathroom with bath and walk in tiled shower, plus sink outside of bathroom. Beds OK and plenty of storage space. Safe available to rent for the week.
Kitchen area small but good enough. No kettle, we used one of the saucepans to heat water which was OK. Two electric rings and a microwave if you did want to cook anything.
Balcony overlooking gardens was nice and could be accessed from bedroom and the lounge area.
Here is my only negative point. It was a little noisy at times...mostly due to people in other rooms dragging the dining chairs over the tiled floors. Not sure what it is like in the summer when the hotel is full. Still it was not a problem to us and didn't stop me from getting to sleep.
Summary
=======
Had a great half-term week at this hotel. Great place for families.
Very nice hotel and I would go again. We are looking at Menorca next year and will look at a Viva hotel there before any others.

We had a super two weeks at Viva Mallorca this summer.A first class hotel, superb landscaped grounds, large pool area and surrounding area for sun beds. Apartments well equiped(apart from a kettle), spacious and cleaned regularly. Ate in a lot as restaurant was good value with half board. the buffet offered a great choice for all the family.Our 15 and 14 year old children loved the hotel as well.They joined in some of the sporting activities, but most of time they were happy in and around the pool. When we arrived the hotel had probably 80% German and Dutch.We enjoyed staying in a hotel that wasnt full of Brits. Despite being peak season the hotel was a relaxed place to be.
We had car for the 2 weeks, so got out and about to expore new areas of Mallorca, and revisit some old favourites...Puerto Pollens, Cala Sa Vincente(wonderful clear water to see the fish).Visited several parts of coastline, the Roman ruins at Alcudia, and Castle Alaro(a hairy journey, but worth it).
This was our 5th time to Mallorca, but first to C'an Picafort.The beach and sea are lovely, the promenade area was a disappointment, struggled to find places that we wanted to eat at(but with great food hotel it wasnt a problem!).
We would thoroughly recommend Viva Mallorca...dont confuse it with Holiday Village C'an Picafort, which is just down the road. I get the feeling this is a more relaxing, more low key hotel, but it depends what you want.
We never go back to the same hotel twice, but could be tempted to go back to Viva Mallorca!

Hi All, please read this for your benefit. I’ve just came back from a lovely holiday with my wife and 2 sons (8 and 5) that we had here. I booked this independently so wanted to share some info with you that should be helpful. This is definitely a FAMILY orientated hotel and I recommend it for a GREAT FAMILY holiday. Just follow some pointers below -
Before you go: Booked the flights direct with Monarch (there and back) including reserved seats and paid for 2 bags of luggage. This worked out cheaper too and safer as I knew where we were going to be seated and all be together (important for a young family). Don't opt for seats in the middle of the plane though like I did, as you'll only see the wings when looking out the windows.
Hired a car, which I'm glad I did as this got us out and around the island. Easy to drive there and do some research (and record the cheapest) first as I did this then got it price matched with a further 10% off after I booked my flights. Take your own booster seats if necessary as this saves more money and is free/easy to do with the airlines.
If you do book independently then wait until the last 10 days and book direct, as they tend to offer the rooms for 25-30% off if booked for more than 3 nights. This was a considerable saving on the week. They take 10% deposit for this and the rest payable on arrival, which I found great. Also did self-catering.
Opted for s/c so not to be restricted regarding where to eat. Glad we did as we found that if we wanted to upgrade to HB or eat at their restaurant (all you can eat buffet style but pretty good choice of food and nice too) then it was cheaper to do this on the night or when you get to the hotel. Not a great choice of kids food and drinks are extra with evening meals but otherwise good. Try Don Dinas near the harbour in can picafort and Zodiac Pizza restaurant as both very good value for money. These are both of the main road through town.
Definitely take good travel insurance with you and I'd even recommend paying the extra to get the best cover required without paying excess too. You'll need to research this before you go.
Finding it: Hotel is a little hard to find if you do drive, so make sure you study the map on their website first to get an idea. Basically it's behind the big supermarket, by the ring road near the beginning of can picafort town. You'll need to take the first exit of the 2nd ring round to get to the hotel the easy way, and then it's straight up 200 yards. (This’ll make sense when you get there.)
Hotel Features/benefits and check in: Obtain safety box from reception, which is in the room (for 16 euros plus 5 refundable deposit), which I found very useful and got this at the start of the week. Input own combination for this.
Make sure you hire beach towels from reception at the start of the week, deposit of 10 euros each but refunded when towels returned at end of holiday. They also change them whenever you need a new one, so always clean.
Pools are absolutely spot on and great for families of all ages with plenty of sun beds to pick from. Indoor pool is small and quite cold but still ok.
Hotel mix was good with mostly British/German families but everyone very friendly. Ideal really!
Apartments are great (especially the walk in showers) but if you do decide to eat at home you'll need to hire kettle and toaster for the week (12 euros each plus 10 euros deposit each) and do this at the start. You may be wasting you money though as you'll probably eat out most of the time. TV has 15 channels and all except CNN are German.
Kids club is based outside of reception in a cabin near the hotel entrance. It has a playing next to it. Never got the kids to do this as they were always in the pool but they did lots of activities there, which looked fun.
Hotel is about 500m from beach but over a few roads so it can be a bit of a pain with kids, but beach seemed ok. Pool at hotel was better anyway.
Hotel supermarket is expensive but there is one (left out of the hotel) not far away, which is very big and a lot cheaper (almost half price).
Great courtesy rooms, so after check out you can stay at the hotel, they look after your luggage, and give you towels for a shower (free) if you want one in the courtesy rooms, which are basically luxury family changing room. These are by the hotel supermarket.
Parking is free.
Overall: Hotel has everything required to make it a very good family holiday including playgrounds, bouncy castles, astro tennis court/football pitch, great pools and restaurant and family entertainment until 10pm. Make sure you take enough money as the euro is expensive at the mo otherwise go prepared and have a very a good family holiday.

Absolutely wonderful! Accommodation was great, surrounding gardens beautiful; pool excellent. Only ate once in the restaurant, so not in a position to comment really. Entertainment was very good, which was mostly performed by the reps on the complex, who are not professional performers. While there is lots of activities for kids, my daughter (then aged seven) was happy enough to spend her time in the pool. Viva Mallorca is a five to 10 minute walk (depending how hot it is!) into the commercial part of Ca'n Picafort, which has lots of bars/restaurants, but is not particularly sophisticated! Tried to go book again for Viva Mallorca this year but couldn't get the dates we wanted. Maybe 2009!

We were overall impressed with Viva Majorca.
The rooms were clean and very spacious. We have been to Viva Menorca (which we loved just as much) however the rooms were far more cramped. The pool had lots of different levels which were great for people of all ages.
The resort looks pretty and has lots of facilities eg. Computers, pool tables, gym, spa.
All that without mentioning the brilliant entertainment scene. They have a full packed day of activities. This is fantastic for young children. There is a separate group for tennis (13-17 yr) which I’m in. After being to Viva Menorca where all the teenies wanted to join in, I was a bit disappointed to see only me and my sister turning up to the activities. The activities for adults are also fantastic. These consist of water aerobics, rifle shooting and archery.
Ca'n Picafort was ok. It did not have a brilliant selection of bars and restaurants. The ones I would request are: jamacan and a little Spanish one set back from the front.
The beach was clean and sandy; there are also jet skis and pedloes. However to my disappointment there was no banana boats but there will probably be soon.
Overall, I and my family loved Viva Mallorca but think Ca'n Picafort could be a little better. We would definately return and hope you have a brilliant holiday!!

This was the fourth time we had visited the resort of Can Picafort but the first time to go self catering. For anybody who has never visited this resort it has a mixture of European nationalities, mainly German, therefore the surrounding restaurants offer a variety of cuisine to suit all.
The Viva Mallorca is one of a chain of hotels and apartments. It is a modern low rise complex with two pools and plenty of sun beds and sunbathing area. It has a huge pool at different depths so it is safe for children. The second pool is 1.5m so is more suitable to enjoy a swim without being too disturbed. We ate a couple of evenings in the hotel restaurant and the food was excellent offering a buffet style evening meal at a very good price. There is also a supermarket on site which is stocked with all the necessary provisions, daily papers and fresh warm bread/baguettes.
Although my daughter was a little too old for it the hotel runs a kids club with English speaking reps. They have a mini disco each evening for children which always seemed very popular.
The hotel provides entertainment by the reps each night which was good (remember these are not professional entertainers).
The accommodation has a small kitchenette and is very spacious and clean. The rooms are situated in blocks and outside the front door is an indoor garden of lush green plants.
The staff are pleasant, warm and welcoming. What I particularly enjoyed about this complex that although the hotel offered an extensive activity programme, the staff were not 'in your face' hassling you to join in constantly, so if you want a holiday where you can relax in true 4 star style you can.
Can Picafort has long pedestrianised strip next to the beach which has many restaurants and bars to offer, however many of the restaurants in the main town area are ok for midday snacks. If you are looking for somewhere good to eat then visit the Sa Cova restaurant in the quieter Son Baulo area which is a little further away from the main town. The menu is not overfilled but offers a variety of meat and fish dishes. The restaurant is opposite the sea with a sophisticated ambience.
