Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel

Once every Canadian winter, I usually go relax in a Club Med resort (total peace of mind and guaranteed fun!), but since they have been bought by Accor Hotels Group, it seems the latter has been jacking up Club Med prices to make them even more upscale. So far this year, since I had other expenses, I was looking for the closest less expensive alternative to Club Med. I've found it: the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach! THE UGLY: If you are a "European" Italian you'll love this place. The resort and staff do all they can to make you feel that you have never left Italy! They go out of their way to placate and please the Italian clientele stopping short of playing the Italian national anthem at least 3 times a day. Everyday the entertainment master of ceremonies (whatever he is) leads the italian mass into a cheer of VIVA ITALIA! Check In - Arrived at 4PM and were told rooms were not ready and they had to make keys. Well that was not a lie because not only were the rooms not ready they weren't even completely furnished yet. Waited a couple of hours and then they gave us the room number. I went with the bellman and my husband said he would meet me at the room as he wanted to speak to a manager after he slipped in the lobby nearly taking down the whold Christmas Tree and no one wanted to know anything about that. Just got back from this property(12/15-12/23/04). It is an outstanding value for the price. I read a lot of reviews (some bad) before my family of 4 (Kids 11 and 14) went down with some apprehension. I found none of the problems mentioned in earlier comments. To the contrary, we were treated like royalty. The guests are mostly Italian (70%) and other europeans, which gives a very interesting flair to a vacation. I went with my girlfriend to Gran Dominicus in Bayahibe(less than 4000 pesos each) and we got a nice weekend, with a good service, what not can be said from Dominicus beach where we payed more than 4000 pesos , a bad entree at the reception, dirty room with spots all over the floor, uncleaned bed, the napkins were smelling from the people before... So what i want to say is that we got the nearest experience on holiday ever!! Positive was the animation outside , and the nice garden!!

Just a few short comments to add to the mix: A group of 38 from Shreveport, LA just spent a week there. We had stayed at Punta Cana before, and wanted to try the Caribbean side. I couldn't wait to return home yesturday 19th June, 2004 after a week long vacation at Viva Dominicus. NOt because i had a bad time, but to ease "future would-be" travellers' minds who might be skeptical about visting viva dominicus beach as i was after reading some of the reviews on this site. After reading some of the reviews posted I wanted to change my reservation to this resort,but i'm glad i did not, because the vacation was enjoyed by myself and my 3 firends. Well, we went with some trepidation after reading all the negative things said here, but all in all we had a great vacation, even with my bag being lost and never recovered. Beach was beautiful, staff very friendly, weather near perfect. That said, if we had had more significant problems with our facilities, or tried to correct our minor ones, I doubt we'd have found satisfaction (we never got a requested bedside lamp in our second room, for example) and despite an advance email our room was initially separated from our kids' room.... more

We just returned from DR. We were a little leary about staying at this property after reading some of the reviews (but we had already paid for it, so what do you do?) We are by request members (through Wyndham website). I think this is what is referred to as VIP's. Very quick and simple to set up online. When we arrived we were greeted warmly (and in English) we have a welcome drink brought to us at the front desk. Our room was available immediately. our family just spent a very enjoyable Easter vacation at the Wyndham Viva Beach Resort with absolutely no problems! The hotel was beautiful - beach was awesome with plenty of coconut trees offering shade, plenty of lounge chairs, great sandy beach with clear blue waters, slight waves and good snorkling. Very good snorkling and dive trips offered at the hotel. Rooms were clean-minimal towels provided but no washcloths.
