We eventually arrived after a flight delay without explanation. We were shown to our rooms on the fifth floor, on first sight didn’t seem too bad, however we had had a 15 hour day of travelling so were relieved to have arrived. We dumped our bags and went for tea, which after the so called breakfast on the plane seemed very appetising.
We got up the next day to find the carpets in the rooms sodden right through to the room door, which apparently must be the norm at the hotel after rain. Why then have carpet in a hotel? We changed rooms and carried on as best we could taking into account the terrible weather.
The food however was always luke warm at best and the plates dirty and chipped, plastic beakers to drink out of which had engrained dirt on them. There’s little wonder then that on the days the sun did come out three out of the four of us in our party were (and still are) suffering with food poisoning. To top it all, a two and a half hour delay on our return flight without explanation.
Did I mention the flea bites we also suffered?
This experience has totally put us off returning to Turkey which I am sure for many has left far greater impressions as it is a very beautiful country. The first and last time I have travelled Goldtrail, what a very disappointing holiday.

Upon arrival at the Abacus at 8pm, we were told to don't bother book in yet and to go and get our evening meal. That was our first mistake. The food is terrible, everything is cold or at the best luke warm, chicken and rice everyday and night. After eating we went to book in, only to be told the computer system was down and please come back in an hour. We sat and had a drink, but noticed others we arrived with booking in. Again we went to reception, this time we were told others had their rooms allocated and ours wasn't, please come back in an hour. At 9.30pm we went back to reception, again we were told the computers were not working please come back in 30 minutes. In the mean time other people were booking out. At 10pm we were told our room was now being cleaned and would be ready in 15 minutes. At 10.30pm after arguing with the unhelpful, lying receptionist and carrying our cases up 4 flights of stairs because the lift was not working, we got to our room.
Basic is not the right word to describe the rooms. Other people we were talking to had no shower curtains, so everytime they showered the bathroom flooded. They had holes in the sink and bare live wires in the bedrooms.
It took 3 days to get the lift repaired, that was ok for us but older holiday makers were really struggling.
The Goldtrail reps were not much help either. When booking trips they gave you no information and the transport they laid on was a joke. When we went on a boat trip, the minibus they sent you could not even open the door from the inside.
Seen as the Abacus is supposed to be 4 star, it doesn't even make a 2 star. It is the worst hotel we have ever stopped in. Everyone you spoke to had a horror story to tell, but at least you didn't feel alone. Glad to be back home!!!
DONT DO IT DONT GO TO THE ABACUS COMPLEX.

I enjoyed my stay at the Idas. The food was good, there was plenty of choice, the staff were helpful and worked hard to please. The hotel is certainly a little tired and is in need of some refurbishment the carpets and decoration needs attention. The rooms are fairly basic but clean and tidy. After reading mixed reviews I was pleased, it was certainly value for money. Icmeler is a lovely resort and I would visit the resort and the hotel again.

We arrived in the early hours & having booked our holiday & transfer independently & we were there long before the tour buses.
Reception was straight forward with the exception of buying a voucher booklet to be used for drinks after the AI had ended. We hired the TV remote which we later found out, enabled us to watch the only 2 English speaking channels (CNN News & the Fashion channel)
The room was tired, but clean & fairly roomy. The air conditioning was a whole other matter. The relatively cool air literally fell out of the air vent, it was so poor I had to push my bed under it every night to get any benefit at all (bad when it's 29 deg outside at 22:00). The bathroom was clean & fairly large with a shower that hit you like a barrage of acupuncture needles.
Meals on the AI were pretty samey; you wouldn't starve if you liked chicken & chips. But we ate out quite often, I mean Icmeler has so many really good restaurants it would be criminal not to try some of them
The entertainment was aimed at the kids & round the pool & the team worked really hard to get them involved. The bar staff & the maids were excellent & really friendly, especially if you said please & thanks in their language.
Icmeler is a fantastic resort, small & friendly. The Metropole is not a 4* but a 2*+ & I would never go AI in Turkey again as food is good & cheap outside.

Before I comment on the triumvirate of misery that is Goldtrail Holidays, Onur Air and the Abacus 'Complex' (sounds rather like a health issue....you'll have one after staying here), let me first just comment that the £600 we paid for two adults to travel all inclusive in relatively high season still represents good value.
As long as flight safety, comfort, hygiene, and customer service appear low on your list of must haves for your summer getaway.
Additionally Icmeler as a resort scores reasonably well and therefore escapes any blame.
Let’s start with the flight from Luton Airport. Prior to boarding the plane I commented to my fiancée that it looked like an 'old banger'. Had I had the foresight to research Onur Air's dubious safety record I would have realised the lack of humour in this comment.
In short...this carrier’s recent history does not paint a rosy picture and warrants serious consideration of whether to fly.
On board the plane the cabin crew are the polar opposite of what you will probably have come to expect from the norm. The usual friendly demeanour is replaced by unsmiling apathy where you every wish is largely ignored. I was asked if I wanted a drink 2 hours into the flight to be told 'I will have to come back to you later'. I didn't get a drink until I got into Dalaman Airport.
Then there is the food.
Airline food is usually abysmal on a good day. Onur air appear to be pioneering a new low in on-board food, we were offered a tray of christ knows what on the way out with the obligatory roll and butter. Probably best I do not mention the 'strange' noises the engines make...
On arrival at Dalaman airport we were impressed with the modernist and minimalist architectural approach, until we realised that they hadn't finished it and didn't appear to be making any plans to. However the passage through visa/passport control was swift so well done to the authorities at the airport.
And then we were back in the hands of Goldtrail. We were greeted by our rep for the 2 and a half hour transfer from Dalaman to Icmeler. We were given the usual lecture at the start of the transfer and advised we would stop after 1 hour for a comfort break. Apparently on schedule we arrived at some remote outpost where we paid around 5 pounds for a bottle of diet coke and packet of crisps, before being charged another pound for the privilege of using the toilet.
After a further 2 and a half hours on the coach and 8 drop offs in Marmaris/Icmeler we finally arrived at our 'Hotel'. The journey from Dalaman to Icmeler is around 70 miles but took nearly four hours transfer time. Not that Goldtrail tell you this, since they don't wish to highlight their spectacular lack of organisation skills.
The Idas hotel forms part of the Abacus Complex and the sister hotel is the Metropole. On arrival we had to pay a deposit of 30 lira to secure a remote control for the TV and air conditioning, and to cover damages and losses.
As we waited at the reception for the check in process to be completed we noticed what was supposed to be our restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next 7 days. With all due respect to elderly care homes this is exactly what the scene reminded us of. Ancient furniture, chintz furnishings and devoid in any kind of atmosphere or character.
The room itself was ok with the exception of the stained carpet, cheesecloth sheet on the bed and TV displaying BBC world service and every German TV Channel known to mankind. Thanks for the personal touch Goldtrail.
As for food I would advise anyone to bring plenty of extra money, you will need it. Breakfast is continental style with the addition of boiled eggs, baked beans, Turkish sausage and cheese topped tomatoes. The only variation to this is the shape of the sausage - sometimes round, sometimes square and flat.
Lunch is salad, with salad and more salad. The 'hot' offering is chips, meatballs and some variant of chicken/fish. Except the food isn't hot since they carry it over from the neighbouring hotel by hand (no expense spared on a hostess trolley).
Dinner is invariably 3 trays of slop accompanied by the salad (yes identical to the salad from lunchtime).
One point of interest (there weren't many) was that I had a bowl of morello cherries one lunchtime and emptied the main serving bowl which remained empty when it was brought out for the next 4 meals.
And onto the bar. The staff are miserable, surly, disinterested, and slow. The drinks are dispensed in the main into small plastic cups which incidentally you are not allowed to take to your room - yes you have to remain at the bar amongst the rest of the long suffering brits (and the occasional German) should you wish to enjoy the drinks you have already paid for.
A few additional points...
The entertainment at the sister hotel - the Metropole - is hilariously awful. If you are situated facing in the direction of this hotel you will not be able to shut out the sound of someone murdering pop classics on the karaoke. Terrible.
On checking out of the hotel you will be asked if you have paid a deposit (despite this being hotel policy otherwise you will not receive a TV remote). Some sort of confidence trick to get you to leave the deposit?
Don't ask for an alarm call - they will forget which is what happened to us when we asked for a call prior to our very early morning (1.30am) departure. The receptionist simply chuckled when we asked why we did not get a call...
If you have an early morning flight your breakfast will be potatoes, scrambled egg, and a roasted chilli pepper. Simply disgusting.
The hotel is bordered by a seedy market style arcade where one of our parting memories was a young man getting seven bells kicked out of him.
The reps will be noticeable by their absence. You will see them on the transfers and the welcome party where they have an opportunity to sell their excursions!
The airline address all their announcements in Turkish first followed by broken English, despite almost all on board the plane being UK citizens.
It's not all bad though. Icmeler is a great place, very scenic and lots to do. If you eat out you probably won't be disappointed and the food is excellent. We will definitely go to Turkey again, just not with Goldtrail or Onur Air, and certainly not at an Abacus Hotel.

This is definitely not a 4* hotel. We were placed in Hotel Idas and after reading such terrible reports I was dreading walking into the hotel room. After a night of travelling and delays without any explanations we basically just dumped our bags and headed out to get some breakfast.
Breakfast food was terrible - tasteless. We then headed out to Friends bar where you can get a full english for £1.50 GBP. Very tasty!! Our room in the Idas - the beds were clean and towels changed regularly. Carpets were filthy and kept riding up. Air Con worked really well in our room which was 416, you definitely need it as the temperatures were still in the 40's.
Entertainment around the pool at the Metropol was good, Iceman, Shaggy very entertaining and friendly. We occasionally ate lunch at the Metropol hotel which mostly consisted of Chips, Pasta, salad and Chicken.
Every night we ate out at different restaurants in Icmeler, would definitely recommend Mandarin Bar, food in here was superb and reasonably priced. Overall we had a great time but this hotel should be rated 2* max. I would not recommend Goldtrail at all there was never a rep to see and after the delays we had an explanation would have been nice.

This hotel was an absolute dissappointment in every way, I will be very surprised if this hotel will be open next season as there were that many people complaining. I have been to Icmeler so many times and have stayed in a lot of places and this was by far the worst ever, there is no way that it is a 4 star - I've stayed in better 2 stars. I will never go back to stay there and would strongly recommend no-one else did either. Sorry.

Returned 24/10/2011 after 2 weeks at this alleged 4 star hotel.Food was luke warm heated underneath by night lite candles and all complaints to staff(of which there were many)were met with a shrug of the shoulders.this was our 6th holiday in turkey and set a new low standard.Location is on a busy main road none of the rooms have an outlook other than road/close adjoining buildings and a noisy nightclub
