Hotel Description:

The Hotel Gonatas manages the trick of being small in terms of external dimensions, yet curiously large inside with plenty of room for guests to stretch out in modern surroundings. Arguably one of Greece's best-appointed establishments, it is bright and clean throughout, tastefully furnished and represents a true breath of fresh air from every angle ' the views across the horseshoe bay below are simply breathtaking.

" The Gonatas has a beautiful location... "

The Gonatas has a beautiful location overlooking the Bay of Samos, Ithaca and the Kefalonian mountains. It is absolutely spotless and so welcoming that you are made to feel part of the family and it is very much a family run business. Nicky the owner's daughter speaks English very well and is extremely helpful. The pool is lovely.

In front of the hotel, though scarcely visible, is a very quite road beyond which there are steps down to a lovely pebble beach in a cove. The hotel itself has a lovely pool.

Be aware that the provided sun beds do not have cushions and that the breakfast is a basic Greek breakfast not the normal continental breakfast. Nicky will freshly cook any breakfast you like for a couple of euros.

This year the hotel only provided food up to 5 pm though this was of a very high standard, very reasonably priced and came with a free half litre of wine per couple.

Aghia Efimia is absolutely beautiful though you need to hire a car to visit the rest of the island. I would recommend emailing Greek stones for car hire. There are boat trips from the village though cheaper, and better, trips are available from Sami on an authentic cacique called the Sami Star. Kefalonia is wonderful for a quiet holiday in a beautiful and friendly island.

There are lots of places to eat in the village. Next door is the Paradise Beach which is excellent with a superb chocolate soufflé. Others I would recommend are Perasmo on the quay, Pergols up the Argostoli road and Maki;s on the Sami road at the far end of the village.
