Macdonald Pittodrie House Reviews

Jan 2006, HW Happy

Pittodrie house is a quiet little hotel with only 27 bedrooms, situated just outside Aberdeen in a tranquil secluded area. We chose this hotel for a weekend break away from the office. The hotel itself has several public rooms, each with its own roaring fire. There was also... more

Not worth it!!
Where do I begin? The lady at reception was terribly rude not only to me but also to the person on the phone that she ignored me for. We stayed in the Tower Room, supposedly fantastic, but the carpet was filthy, the furniture was old (not in a good way) and chipped, and was basically a huge disappointment after such a long journey. One of the worst parts was that the breakfast buffet in the morning was plagued by flies. If you are visiting the region - do not stay here! Go instead to one of the cheaper and more pleasant B&Bs nearby. Not to sound totally down on the place - it had lovely views out of the window.
Overpriced but homely
After reading the previous reviews I was somewhat wary of booking but there were no other hotels available to me at short notice. I stayed in Room 12 at the back of the hotel and the room was great. A clean room with character and a modern en-suite The room was larger than most hotel rooms - especially for 3 star. The food was ok, but the drinks were extremely overpriced however I did get a very good rate on my room which helped to average out the total bill. I would stay again but make sure you book a room in the newer extension at the rear of the hotel.
Dont Go Here!
Have just returned from a dreadful 1 night stay at this hotel. Our room was shabby but not shabby chic! Broken furniture, worn surfaces and to top it all the room had not been cleaned since the previous guest departed. The bed had been made but nothing else done. The previous guests rubbish was still all over the room and it stayed this way despite our complaining to reception. The carpet is long overdue for replacement and can only be described as filthy! If you must stay here make sure it is not in the Erskine Room. We experienced no customer service, even at breakfast we had not been allocated a table and felt like gatecrashers at the wedding which had been held the previous evening. Obviously the staff were only interested in looking after the wedding guests and not those paying £190 a room for bed and breakfast. I am still shocked over this dreadful place and am awaiting a repsonse from Customer Services Manager of this hotel group.
Disappointing
We stayed at the hotel for one night in January. Disappointing is an understatement. We arrived in the afternoon and our bedroom was freezing! We had to turn the radiators on (this had not been done for us - even though we were expected and had a reservation). By early evening, the room was still not at an ambient temperature - the radiators were working but the hotel is old with single glazed old windows in poor condition. The room was so cold that the sheets on the bed felt "damp". I ended up sleeping on a towel to get extra heat!! On top of this, I noticed cobwebs on top of the curtains. To top things off, 2 days later I developed the worst cold imaginable - I knew exactly where that had come from! I should have complained to the hotel the next morning but felt it wasn't worth it, I knew I wouldn't be back. On the plus side, the lounges are welcoming and have a homely traditional feel about them and the setting is wonderful. I live locally but "tourists" would appreciate the location. There is just no excuse for this sort of shabby approach in the hotel trade. I know that this hotel is extremely popular for wedding functions - it is just a shame that they don't invest some of the profits into refurbishing what is a tired building. I agree with the reviewer who said 4 star pricing for 3 star quality. I almost feel embarrased for those travelling from afar to this hotel, it must be such a let down. Don't bother.
3 Star Hotel at 4 Star Prices
We cannot recommend the Pittodrie House Hotel. While the grounds are extensive and picturesque and the staff quite friendly, our hotel room (South) was shabby with stuffing coming out of threadbare upholstery. The room was quite large but had a double bed and only a few light fixtures making reading at night very difficult. The bathroom was poorly configured with the toilet sitting directly at the doorway. The shower was a trickle. All of this would have been acceptable if the room rate was reasonable but at 170 GBP we felt that we had overpaid. Dinner at 33.50 GBP per person seemed high for the quality. We had planned to stay 3 days but left after 2 days.
This is the place for an excellent getaway
I spent only one enjoyable evening in the Pittodrie House Hotel in Aberdeenshire a few years ago. I have been thinking about it since. I plan to return this year. The accomodations were absolutely wonderful. I recall sitting in the downstairs bar, across from the billiard room, with a glass of single malt watching the drizzle. I can't recall a more pleasant afternoon. The food was four star quality.
Incredible Holiday
Staying at Pittodrie House on our honeymoon for 5 days was one of the most memorable trips ever. From Maggie playing the pipes as we arrived and others arriving for dinner-to the amazing food-to the tiny bar with over 100 single malts-to the beautiful grounds, gardens, etc. to the staff that treats you like really welcome family, we have to say that we will not only be back soon, but are telling everyone we know who's going near the UK that they have to stay for a day or two. Try the tower room, it's the best, and you will leave rested, relaxed, happy and hoping to soon return. Thanks again Smiths! Erik & Shamaa
