" WELL AFTER READING THE OTHER REVIEWS... "

WELL AFTER READING THE OTHER REVIEWS I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR HOLIDAY.

RECEPTION STAFF WERE FRIENDLY AND SIMPLE CHECK IN BUT BE PREPARED FOR COMPLETING ARRIVAL FORMS. THE APPARTMENTS WERE VERY CLEAN, NOT A ANT IN SIGHT.

APPARTMENT THAT WE WERE ALLOCATED OVER LOOKED THE POOL AND HAD A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE BAY. BUT BE AWARE NOT ALL ROOMS HAVE A VIEW OF THE POOL AND THE BAY.

IN THE ROOM THERE WERE 2 BEDROOMS ONE WITH 2 SINGLES PUSHED TOGETHER AND A VERY LARGE WARDROBE I ADVISE TO TAKE EXTRA COAT HANGERS ALTHOUGH THERE WERE PLENTY THERE WERE NO DRAWS ONLY A SHELF. SO WE HAD TO HANG EVERYTHING UP.

THE SECOND ROOM COMPRISED OF L SHAPED BUNKS NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYONE TALLER THAN 5 FOOT. BOTH MY SONS WERE 2 BIG FOR THE BEDS AND THEY ARE NOT THE TALLEST OF BOYS.

THE KITCHENETTE WAS BASIC 2 RINGS AND A SEPERATE OVEN JUST BIG ENOUGH TO PUT IN 1 9INCH PIZZA. BUT PLENTY OF POTTERY AND CUTTLERY EVEN A TEA TOWEL OOOO!.

THE W/C WAS BASIC BUT CLEAN, OUR TOLIET BROKE AND IT TOOK THEM 7+ HOURS TO GET SOME ONE TO FIX IT WHICH WASNT VERY HYGIENIC.

THE LOUNGE AREA HAD CUPBOARD AND A COFFEE TABLE AND SOFA THAT HAD A BED BELOW BUT NO TELEVISON.

MAIDS CAME IN ONCE TO CHANGE THE TOWELS AND MAKE THE BEDS. THAT WAS IT. WE HAD TO KEEP OUR OWN ROOM CLEAN, WHICH IS NOT A PROBLEM. THERE WAS A MOP AND BUCKET BUT NO SWEEPING BRUSH.

THE ENTERTAINMENT WAS TYPICAL OF A HOLIDAY RESORT HOTEL NOTHING SPECIAL.

THE BEACH IS LOVELY THERE IS A HORSE SHAPED COVE AND A SMALL COVE TO THE SIDE. THE SEA IS CALM AND SAFE FOR KIDS, ITS ALSO GREAT FOR SNORKLING.

THE RESORT WAS VERY VERY QUIET ONLY AND HANDFUL OR BARS AND RESTURANTS AND ALL VERY EXPENSIVE. IT COST 50 EUROS FOR 2 MAINS AND 2 DRINKS.
THE HOTEL ADJOINING HAS A BUFFETT WHICH YOU CAN PURCHASE FOR 16 EUROS PER DAY FOR HALF BOARD AND 8 EURO FOR CHILDREN UNDER 12. WE TRIED THIS ONCE.

THE ADJOINING HOTEL OFFERS A MINIBUS RIDE IN TO MOHAN FOR 6 EUROS PER PERSON.

ALL SAID MENORCA IS A VERY BEATIFUL ISLAND AND I WOULD LIKE TO COME AGAIN BUT MAYBE TRY A DIFFERENT RESORT

" Apartments small and basic (microwave... "

Apartments small and basic (microwave sized oven/grill) but clean and well laid out and look like the pictures in the brochure/web, although one quarter of the apartments don't look onto the pool/beach but instead are below pool level and their rear terrace looks onto a hedge.

Clean towels/sheets supplied & rooms cleaned to a high standard three times (after arrival to a spotless apartment) for two weeks. Staff all great and friendly. 24 hour service available from next door sister premises (Isla Paraiso - far higher standard in those apartments incl air conditioning etc). No ants in the apartment.

Entertainment at neighbouring premises variable (Miss/Mr Paraiso, bingo, quizes, Beijing Acrobats (who were stupendous) and various tribute shows). Kids club entertainers Mickey and new girl Christina (who just arrived last week) are massive hits with the kids during the day (excluding Sunday) and at the nightly (inc Dunday) Crazy Kids Disco.

Decent direct bus services to Mahon (for connections elsewhere on the island), Fornells, Es Mercadal and Cala Tirant (Platages de Fornells) - all the fares were circa 2 Euros each (only one way tickets available). Also available was a regular (every 45 minutes) road train to Covas Novas and Na Macaret (6 Euro round trip/4 Euro single).

In Arenal there were several car hires & bureaux de change, but only a limited number of shops. Although a non-smoker I noticed at least two places where cigarettes etc were available in Arenal including El Mirador which was a very good, friendly restaurant almost apposite the entrance to the Isla Paraiso - which put on an astronomy night one night (the views of the moon, Saturn and Jupiter were amazing), and a Tabac adjacent to another very good and friendly restaurant the Good Bridge Cafe.

" The only negative thing I can think... "

The only negative thing I can think to say is the apartment did not have air conditioning, only a fan, but this was not a problem as Menorca is generally not as hot as other med countries, so did not cause us a problem.

We were extremely surprised at how clean and well presented these apartments were having been renovated a few years ago being rated as a 2 key - hence we have stayed in much worse 3 key places! We faced literally out onto the pool and also had a lovely sea view albeit a hill in the middle. (We are usually unlucky and get horrible positions).

We had a change of towels twice during our week stay and beds changed once. A quick clean around by the maids and we had to empty our rubbish but we didn’t mind as it is nice to keep your apartment tidy. There were a few ants but nothing to worry about if you kept your rubbish at bay.

Arepar are literally next to the Isla Paraiso (JMC) which has more pools and lovely kept gardens. Although the Paraiso are slightly bigger apartments, with bigger balconies we liked the quietness of the Arepar and made friends with our 'neighbours'. Generally a very quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

The Arepar can use the facilities of the Paraiso which, too, is not a noisy complex, a quietish family orientated resort. We ate at the Paraiso 'El Faro' which was pleasant enough but preferred to eat out and about. (Did not try the hotel's buffet or breakfast).

There are two shops next to the Arepar and Paraiso which I have to say are expensive but no other choice nearby and they do lovely fresh bread and cakes etc.

We thought the entertainment was great, really professional shows and no 'Mr and Mrs type shows' - all shows recommended - cannot pick a favourite, watch them all as they are great. (Thanks Arepar/Paraiso).

The beach is literally down a hill of steps and over a quiet road, down a slope and then you're at the wonderful horseshoe shaped bay. Very safe bay and swimming, i.e. and snorkelling. The pedelo was one of the most expensive ever - 40 Euros for an hour but worth it for the views. (Did nearly have a heart attack when I was told the price though)!

We went on the train for a couple of hours to Macaret which was cheap at 6 Euros each and you get it outside the Arepar.

We wanted a lazy beach holiday and that was exactly what we got, one of the nicest, cleanest resorts we have been to and the hotel people were so friendly too and helpful.

I have given this holiday a 10 out of 10 as we cannot fault it. Just wish eating out and the shop were a bit more reasonable as our money did not go very far, however, the euro was better value in 2006 which also made a huge difference.

We are a family of five with a 15 year old and two 14year olds who played in the games rooms i.e. pool, air hockey and table tennis. Ours are not into clubs yet and this family resort suited us, there were other teenagers there too with whom they made friends with.

We wanted a nice 'family' holiday away from the usual rush rush rush which was exactly what we got. (Oh and no sun bed grabbing either which made a refreshing change - plenty to go around all day).

Hope you have a wonderful holiday like we did, I cannot see why some people have rated this place a 3 out of 10 as after all it is average accommodation but worthy of at least a 3+ rating for the cleanliness and nice position.

Wish I was still there, will definitely return in 2008. (Next year Fuerteventura).

" First time we had taken our 3 young... "

First time we had taken our 3 young children abroad (Age 5,3 and 10 months) so we were very apprehensive about it. Booked 2 weeks at the Arepar through Thomas Cook in January and got an excellent deal. So much so that we wondered what we were going to! I have to say however that neither the brochures nor any reviews we read did this place any justice.

The apartments were large, clean and well maintained. The pool at the apartments was good however we used the pool at the sister hotel, The Isla Paraiso because it was more child friendly. The hotel is right next to the apartments with only a small gate separating them.
The entertainment in the hotel at night was a mixture of a children’s disco (the kids absolutely loved it!) and various cabaret acts.

The resort was absolutely beautiful with everything you could need for a family holiday. Plenty of restaurants serving everything from Italian to Chinese and the standard of the food was excellent. A visit to Smithy's for their Chicken Curry is a must!

The beach was outstanding and very safe for young children. Everything in the resort from the streets to the restaurants was spotless. The resort is very hilly with steps so may not suit if you have mobility problems.

Overall I would highly recommend both the Arepar and Arenal D'En Castell for a family holiday and would go back.

" We have just arrived home after week... "

We have just arrived home after week in the ant infested Arapar apartments, although on the face of things it looks very clean.

We went to reception and reported the problem and they promptly sent a can of insect spray to our room. The cleaners arrived after us being there 3 days and changed the sheets on the adults beds but left the kids room, they did not have to clean the room as we kept it spotless ourselves in order to try to keep the ants at bay.

We had to throw several bags of sugar, bread, biscuits and cereals away because no matter how clean we tried to keep it they were infested and asked how we spray food cupboards with chemical sprays to no avail.

We had to ask for clean towels as they did not change them and ended up buying our toilet rolls and cleaning products and found it in every sense certainly a self catering holiday.

Entertainment was at the Isla Paraiso complex next door and we enjoyed a couple of nights out of the seven we were there. Temperatures reached 36 degrees and reception had no fans available unless we were willing to pay massive hire fees while Isla Paraiso part of the same complex had air con free of charge.

We found it to be a very expensive holiday, eating out for a family of four would cost in excess 60 euros for a good meal, although try smithy's and Kanes for good value and quality, Arenal D En Castell is a very quiet resort and if you’re looking for things to do you need a car, the main beach is beautiful and well worth a visit, Mahon is also nice the local bus service was good but watch for schedule changes, if you want cigarettes the local tobacconist is in Fornells or Mahon you can not buy cigs in resort.
