The San Georgio was a lovely hotel, exceptionally clean and the staff on the whole were friendly and approachable. The snack bar was nice and reasonably priced, as were most of the drinks with specials most days such as bottled beer for 1€.
There was only one bin in the room, in the bathroom, which did get very full and usually over-flowed. The room was spacious; plenty of room for 3 adults and most had a lovely view of the sea from what I could tell. The outside areas were also spotless - the maids were superb and I cannot emphasise enough how clean everywhere was!
There were two nice pools, plenty of sun beds and a mini-market also reasonably priced considering the isolated location. The hotel offered a mini-bus into town for free but we had a car and so can't comment on the service. If you want to explore the island, a car is essential. The breakfast in the hotel was nice, much better than the Captains House Hotel, with toast, rolls, ham, cheese, cereal, tea, coffee, juice and either yoghurt/fruit.
This is the only thing that let the hotel down slightly, the ham/cheese was not covered and the wasps/flies were often seen munching on it - nice! And the lack of fruit daily did get a bit annoying, we ended up buying some to take with us but overall the hotel was superb. I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone. However, the hotel is situated on the side of the hill and there are a lot of steps! There are at least 25 between levels in the blocks and they cannot be avoided. There are 3 car parks located up the hill but even the road requires first gear and high revs – very steep!!
The resort of Skala is a nice busy little town. No-where on the island is big though; the capital city is about the size of a large town in England if that. There are lots of nice places to eat in the town, and nice beaches in the area if you have a car (reviews of beaches at end.)
Reviews of restaurants:
Symposium – is on the seafront and a large open-air restaurant. It was very high quality service and the food was nicely presented and reasonably priced.
Kiliva – set off the main street and known for its Greek dancing show, which many people watch from the street. It is very good for Greek food, such a Pastitsio that was delicious and also reasonably priced. Check your drinks however as vodka usually comes as bacardi when ordered with coke!
Captain Jerry’s – Katelios (the next village on – towards the capital) is renowned for its fish as it is a fishing village. Most restaurants offer specials and the fish is fresh caught and lovely. The swordfish souvlaki was lovely and the sea-bass special was excellent value. The one waiter here was superb, the other not so much – he was very aloof shall we say hehe.
Penelope – is a boat restaurant on the side of the road from Skala to Poros not far from the San Georgio. The portions were huge, the prices reasonable and the homemade burger were superb – we only stopped for lunch but it was always busy of an evening.
Pines and Pines too – we went to the Pines too for lunch one day and although right on the beach it was very reasonable and nice. It has music TV and is handy for beach refreshments and some shade! The Pines is situated at the end of the main street and on the square, it has service that little bit higher than some of the restaurants such as Kilivia – more formal but prices are 0.50€ more expensive. The food was nicely presented and delicious but the boss was very cocky and when we asked to book a table he said there was no need and just to see him to be fitted in, regardless of us wanting a certain table for our last night (we went elsewhere).
Galera – by far the nicest restaurant in Skala. The service was superb, relaxed and yet prompt and the atmosphere was superb. The food was of a very high standard – the vegetables were fresh and well cooked, the potatoes were varied and the meats/fish were all to perfection. The Belly Pork with BBQ sauce was lovely, and the Carbonara was the best in the resort. We ate here two nights and they were more than happy to take a booking. A must.
In Poros we ate at a little restaurant called Bello, on the left of the main road through the village from Skala. It was a pizzeria with a traditional clay oven. The pizza was delicious, and my Mum enjoyed it even though she’s not a pizza person. They also served ice creams and are very cheap. The owner Michael was lovely and welcoming as was his son who worked on his lunch hour from school. It was also a very clean restaurant including the toilets.
In Sami we ate lunch at Cosi. The food was very nice and the staff were very friendly on first impressions even showing us their photo album of when the building was used in Captain Correlli’s Mandolin. HOWEVER, the food cost 47€ and we left a 3€ tip thinking nothing of it. That evening we went out for dinner which cost just over 40€. Realising how expensive lunch had been (2club sandwiches, a Greek salad and ice creams) we returned to Cosi to check the prices. We had been over-charged, and not expecting anything back from the staff, but merely to question the cost, the staff lost the power to speak English and it was obvious they pulled this stunt on a regular basis.
Reviews of Beaches:
Poros – a very nice long beach with a very buoyant sea. As with most beaches it gets deep quickly but there are less rocks here than in most places. There are small bars along the shore and sunbeds available. It is a blue flag beach and very nice.
Agh. Paraskevis – nr. Sami – On the right hand side of the road leaving Sami, there are signs for a beach club and grill, if you park here you can get very very cheap drinks the beach club and access through a garden to a small rocky cove. The beach is very clean, has some trees for shade, and the garden is also very shady. The other advantage is the toilets! The sea is very clear but once again deep quickly, good for snorkelling. Don’t take anything you would hate to loose such as sunglasses in the sea as if you drop them it is a long way down to fetch them – 25ft I dived for Mums!
Andisamos – follow the road into Sami and then signs for Andisamos up a road you are sure will disappear and you turn a corner to see views of a beautiful beach surrounded by a green mountainside – no development. There is a beach hut selling cans, a beach bar set back, plenty of parking and loos – though very waspy, there are also changing huts. The beach was nice, and picturesque but Paraskevis and Poros beat it easily once the impressive location wears off.
Makris Gialos (near Lassi) is a beautiful beach, follow the signs to it and you come to a car park shaded by trees, you then walk down past a very reasonable bar, down some steps to the beach. It is very long and narrow but sandy!! YAY no rocks hehe, and the sea gradually gets deep making it safer for children. The sun beds are 8€ a day for 2 and a brolly, but if you don’t want a day they won’t budge on price. There are water sports available and showers for leaving the beach. Very nice.
If you have a car, petrol is cheapest between Mousata and Viahata, it was the cheapest by around 5cents on average which makes a difference when it has to be returned full with Europcar. The car we had was pre-booked, nicely cleaned and grade higher than ordered. Be warned the roads are twisty and the island is hilly. The maps and signs are easy to follow and the Greeks drive using the theory avoid others meaning when the road is clear they drive centrally rather than on their side – don’t panic!
Hope this has helped, we had a lovely time in Kefalonia which a gorgeous island and the places we ate, and the San Georgio completed it.

Third time to hotel gets even better every year! Staff are brilliant, and even after 3 years remembered us! Couldnt recommend this enough! Already looking at going back in October! Should be a 5*hotel.
Is a short distance from scala village, but the hotel runs a courtesy bus, or taxis are only 5 euro. The walk is lovely when not too hot!!
If you want to see the islands, I recommend, captain Vangelis on scala beach, cruises on a glass bottom boat, very very good, and very personal. We went to fiskardo and agia efimia, Ithaca and Zante with these people and the best trips we did!!

My family are returning to San Giorgio for our third visit in August. Having read the reviews we can only re-iterate what a great place San Giorgio is. The staff are excellent, friendly and efficient, the atmosphere superb, the location breathtaking and this unique hotel is without doubt the very best holiday destination and experience we have had.....ANYWHERE !
Try Greenstones for car hire, they are situated in Skala and offer new cars at prices far better that than the 'national' brands. Excellent service from a Skala company and so your supporting the local economy too!

May 2006, Mrs L A Thomas

We have just returned from a glorious holiday at the San Giorgio hotel in Kefalonia, the hotel is by far one of the best we have ever stayed in and the view from our room was simply stunning (no 73).
The staff are very friendly and the cleanliness cannot be faulted. Yes it is slightly out of the resort center but they provide a courtesy bus and the taxi's are only 5 euros, the walk is very pleasant along the coastline and you can explore the hidden coves along the way, it's about a 40 minute walk to reach the main resort center but there are places along the way to eat and drink, we loved to stop at the boat for lunch which is about half way and there chips are to die for!
The Greek meal for two at the Pines is gorgeous but don't expect to be able to move afterwards! Kefalonia itself is the most beautiful Greek island I have ever been to and I would recommend the San Giorgio Hotel to anyone it is fabulous :0)

Fantastic hotel on the outskirts of Skala.
2 pools so no problem getting a sunbed. Excellent snack bar & very good restaurant. Shop on site, prices are ok but as always the supermarkets in the town are cheaper. It doesn't sell beer so you have to buy this in.
The entertainment is quiet good, Greek Nights is worth watching especially if Makis does his special dance.
Great sea views from most of the rooms. Already visited 3 times & will definitely return.

9/10. It would be 10/10 but the transfer by bus from the airport was LONG. Would definitely consider taxi next time (cost would be worth it but not cheap). We're booking for San Georgio Apts for 2006 the place is that good.
Hotel is superb, staff great, room clean, view from room great. 3 LARGE pools to choose from and there were plenty of sunbeds even in height of mid summer.
Renting a car is a must to experience the full beauty of this island. Kefalonia is not a small island and some of the views are absolutely breath taking.
Get beach sandals for the pebbles on the beach, they are also a must if you visit the different coves.
There is a 20-40 minute walk into Skala main town but you can also opt for a free bus from hotel into town with a taxi back (4 euros) only because she wouldn't walk.
This is a holiday for someone who wants peace and quiet and to enjoy the company of the person you are with. If you want an all night rave this is not for you.

Hi Chris, Barry, Jean and Dave.
Had a fantastic time at San Giorgio hotel. Sorry for not sending Deron to bed and making him sing. It was a surprise to see your comments so we thought we would reply.
It was a fantastic place and we have booked again for next year although we will be going towards the end of July. We felt cheated last year in that we only had 1 week to enjoy our honeymoon, as were married the week before. So this time week have booked for 2 weeks. Hurray!!!
Staff were very friendly and made us all feel very welcome.
Thanks.
Lots of great memories, met great people, hope we see you again.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the San Georgio hotel. Placed on the beautiful hillside outskirts of Skala town this hotel provided everything possible you may need to enjoy a relaxing and entertaining holiday.
The restaurant provides a cheap but varied menu and the bar is open till late so you can sit by the pool with a cocktail and admire the amazing views of mountains and the sea.
The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the complimentary bus to the town centre was welcome in the heat of the day. I would definitely go back again. The Thompson trips were also excellent and well worth the price.

Fantastic Hotel, very plush and clean but not so much as to lose the family run atmosphere. We’re were so impressed and can hand on heart say it's the best accommodation we’ve stayed in on any of the Greek Islands. Lovely modern facilities in the rooms and bathrooms and impeccably clean. Three swimming pools and endless sunbeds not cramped out to chose from.
Far enough out of town to enjoy peace and quiet but close enough to join the town scene by taxi if you're bored at a cheap rate of only 4 euros. Gratis mini bus laid on from Hotel to town and lots of things to do. Definitely would have appreciated more time than 1 week to do some site seeing, really picturesque island with lots to do and see, maybe next time, eh! Good food ( for Greece ) lovely restaurant and very convenient salad bar for anything from burgers to baguettes.
Would definitely go back. Oh nice friendly staff too, thanks to Spiros for keeping us well watered!!!

Jun 2005, Mrs C Paul

Fantastic holiday!! Four of us went two male/two female!! Rooms were spotless!! Bath as well as shower, which makes nice change for Greece! Restaurant had lovely meals, ate there most of the time! Cafe at lunchtime was also very good value especially salad bar! Plenty of sun loungers around the pools! Peaceful and quiet most days - it was an effort to leave the grounds to go exploring! Went on tour around the island (well recommended, views breath taking). We have told all our friends and now they are booking for next year! If you like a comfortable, relaxing, friendly hotel you would not find better! Even the karaoke night is a laugh, as everyone seems to join in! Me and my friend came second (we were robbed by the way! Children should be in bed late at night tee hee), little lad stole the show! Staff were excellent, couldn’t do enough for us! I had toothache and they supplied me with tablets plus ouzo to swill! Certainly worked! Have rated this hotel a 10 as can’t think of any negative comments! Very hot weather! Suppose hardest thing was trying to keep eyes open around the pool! Didn’t do the walk into town as too hot! Courtesy bus very handy and we got taxi back, which was only 4 euros! Lovely restaurants in scala! Also met lovely people (thanks to all of you who recognise us, enjoyed your company! Even the little singer i have forgiven him for winning!) Will be back! Xx Chris, Barry, jean and Dave from Hartlepool ps did win the quiz though didn’t we?

Very clean, well presented apartments, friendly well presented staff. 2 pools and ample free sunbeds. This complex is on the outskirts of Skala so you have a 20 min pleasant walk along the coast road walk to the centre of Skala where you will find ample restaurants offering anything from Traditional Greek to Chinese food. We had no pressure form people trying to sell you something or from restaurants owners. Would certainly go back for a relaxing trouble free time.

Jun 2004, Miss R Harrison

Excellent accommodation, with a range of facilities. Exceptionally clean and very helpful, friendly staff. 2 pools with ample sun loungers. One word of warning the property is on a steep hillside, so you need to be fit to get up and down to your room, however the views are well worth it. Car hire is a good idea as hotel a good 40 mins walk into Skala, and to allow flexibility in touring around the island. Worth a visit are Fiskardo and the various caves near Sami. Good eating places include The Pines ( try their gorgeous lamb a la pines)and Zorbas in Skala, and the 'ship' restaurant half way between the hotel and skala. The hotel restaurant was also excellent.
