Splendid Hotel

After requesting a view of the lake we felt we shouldnt complain when we were allocated a room in the roof of the building even though these rooms were used by staff and coach drivers. The rooms were clean and adequate but certainly not attractive. The hotel itself is like stepping back in time with an amazing staircase. The pool was unavailable for most of our holiday which was a disappointment especially as we were holidaying peak season and I dont think it will have encouraged people to return which was a real shame. The staff, especially the waiters were absolutely wonderful and the food was delicious and quintessentially italian. Stay away egg and chips brigade! I think the senior management are failing this hotel but the staff who turn up every day to deal with us holiday makers cant do enough to please.

On arrival the sickening smell from the bathroom was so bad we could not take a shower. When we complained to Reception we were told that "When it rains the smell returns - we do not know what it is" Nothing was done until our Tour Rep complained on our behalf - when a can of air freshener was put in the bathroom, which masked the smell long enough to take a shower. This seems to be a recurring problem see 'Definitely not Splended' July 11th 2003. Having said this, the Dining Room Staff were friendly and helpfull and the Cleaning Staff did their best. The food was adaquite with plenty of choice. The Hotel is ideally situated for ferries.

My husband and I arrived in Bellagio without reservations while on a cycling tour of the area. Our room at the Hotel Excelsior Splendide was one of the last rooms available in town. We thought it overpriced for the quality, although the location across from the lake can't be beat. I would describe this hotel as "faded elegance", the type of place catering to bus tours - most of the other guests seemed to be part of a bus tour from the UK. Our room was pretty basic, but it was clean, and the view over the lake was lovely. The front desk staff were pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was good except for the coffee which was from a machine and undrinkable. We had no major complaints, but I think you could do better with some advance planning.

we found the hotel in a time warp of the early 20th century. There was no air conditioning or in room tea/coffee facilities. The room we had had no feel of general comfort (i would not enjoy if the weather was inclement). The food was of a general poor standard, especially the evening dinner main course. I found the pre ordering of meals for the next day especially unusual for a supposedly 3 star hotel, I have travelled extensively in europe and USA and never experienced this before. The staff seemed to be doing their best, but in my opinion were fighting an uphill battle. I would not stay here again. The town and surrounds of Bellagio were beautiful and offered some compensation for the hotel. Definitely NOT 3 star.

Having just returned from Lake Como where the temperature was in the 90s, once exceeding 100. The Hotel Splendide is an excellent base for exploring the Lake. It is not modern but is spacious, clean and the food and service was superb. Highly Recommended

We stayed for a full two weeks in August last year. The views were beautiful but the Hotel was not as we expected. It was in need of repair and the room we stayed in was very small for a double room. Also we had no access to the pool area for two weeks because of a leakage of some sort. We ended up paying each day at a local Sports Club to use the pool and facilities there which added about £150 to our spending. We would have come home as white as we went were it not for the Bellagio Sporting Club. Breakfast at the Splendide was very basic. Croissant (1) coffee from machine and cold boiled eggs. Not very appertising first thing in the morning.

Loved the hotel. We were lakefront and it was georgeous in October. Very nice hotel for the price we paid. Highly recommened!

We had confirmed reservations for 21 to 24 October, well before the planned seasonal closure of the hotel. Upon arrival it was already closed and substitute reservations had not been made for us by the hotel.

Early July 2004, 4 nights at the Excesior Splendide were anything but splendide. Arrogant & belligerant waiters made meal times a purgatory to be endured. No menu so take it or leave it. The 1st floor bedroom/loo with clear glass in all windows was only a few feet from a busy staff area so metal shutters had to be closed for privacy at all times. Not recommended.

My husband & I stayed 6 nights in Bellagio on the shore of Lake Como, Italy. Picture postcard beauty, from the Alps in the background to the many small fishing villages within a 10 to 20 minute ferry ride. We even did a 1 day round trip train ride to St Moritz, Switzerland. People in Bellagio were friendly and accomodating to us. Stayed at Hotel Splendide. Our room was comfortable and the hotel staff were very helpful, making reservations for us for everything from the taxi from Milan to the hotel, dinner at La Grotte and golf at the Menaggio Golf Club across the lake. Wonderful place to relax. We would definitely go again.
