Splendid Hotel

We booked a "Crystal Lakes & Mountains" holiday on their "Four Star Choice" package, which meant allocation on arrival at one of four hotels at either Stresa or Baveno. We were allocated the Hotel Splendid at Baveno.
This was a very well-appointed hotel with excellent facilities, and we obtained a window seat in the dining room which gave superb views over the lake. Meals were part waiter service, and both the quality of service and food were excellent.
The hotel is located about 15 minutes' walk from the main waterfront at Baveno. From the convenience point of view, the Hotel Dino, for example, was obviously better placed, but this was not a problem at all.
We booked earlier in the year to avoid disappointment, this of course meant we paid close to the brochure price. A family we spoke to at the hotel had booked last-minute at a much lower price, which turned us green with envy! But we especially wanted to visit Lake Maggiore so were prepared to pay that little bit more so as to be certain of a place.
The hotel, as it turned out, was obviously not fully booked!
The price factor, frankly, was the only down-side. Lake Maggiore lived up to our expectations. The Borromean Islands were very attractive and obviously popular. Excursion-wise, the visit to Zermatt was superb, with excellent views of the Matterhorn and surrounding scenery.
We would certainly visit Baveno again. It is slightly outshone by its near neighbour, Stresa, but is in an excellent location for boat trips around the lake. We would recommend the Splendid to prospective visitors but suggest shopping around to obtain a favourable price.
