kefalonia is a quiet island and the karavados is a quiet hotel.
if you want solitued and relaxation it is great. if you want discos and parties etc avoid it. there is no nightly entertainment at all but lets be honest if you want the euro crap min-disco [--] go to spain.
we had the pool to ourselves and thouroughly enjoyed our stay as it suited our needs,
i read previous comments from other holiday makers in this forum and their complaints are pretty pathetic. Directions to the room were given so why

" I have just got back from a weeks... "

I have just got back from a weeks holiday at the Karavados Beach hotel and I am definitely relieved.
When we got there we were told where our room was and had to make our own way there with no guidance. I found the staff to be very laid back - in fact if they had been any more so, they would have been asleep!
Having read about the Karavados Beach hotel before I came on this holiday I was surprised to find it was very different to how it was described. It stated that the hotel was newly refurbished, what I now understand by this is that the main hotel had been newly refurbished but the block we were staying in did not appear to have been newly renovated.
The television and sky that was stated in the brochure was one channel and an aerial that have you an electric shock dare you be brave enough to touch it. The room was very very basic with a bed that stood about 1 floor off the floor and bedside tables that were much the same.
The shower was powerful but had to be held as the power was too forceful for it to stay in t he actual holder on the wall - however I could deal with this as the shower was so refreshing, shame there was no hot water from about 8.30 pm onwards.
When we got to the hotel we thought it might be nice to get something to eat as it was about 3 o'clock and hadn't had a meal on the flight so as you can imagine we were quite hungry. We were told no food was going to be available until 7pm. We thought this was unusual for a hotel. We thought it best to go to a supermarket get some food as if this was going to be the case every day, imagine out shock when we were told that to get to the nearest shops we would be charges 30 euros all round - this we thought was very steep considering it was a 10 minute ride in the car.
After much consideration we decided to hire a car, we found that it worked out at 160 euros for 3 days and this was without insurance - we spoke to out holiday rep who strongly advised if we were going to hire a car we should do so off our own backs and not through the hotel as we would almost certainly not have insurance. However because we were so secluded we found it impossible to hire a car any other way - so we didnt. If we had a car we would have been able to explore the island more and definitely would have contributed to a far more enjoyable holiday. We would advise anyone to sort out car hire before you go!!!
We had dinner on the first night and we were shocked that we had no choice and simply got served some green slush and old moussaka...I think? We decided we were not going to risk eating it and it tasted fowl anyway - we spent a lot of money on hotel food which was a shame as we had paid for half board hoping to save some pennies. All in all we spent far more than we wanted to on food on this holiday and the only activity was the swimming pool. We felt that we had to be as quiet as possible as there wasnt a sound! No music or entertainment of any shape or form! Very sad really as the view of the mountains and the sea is incredible.
Having moaned about the holiday itself, I must add the rooms were cleaned every day and the sunshine was truly delightful! We certainly had time to relax on this holiday - if a little bored and very poor after the hotel and taxi expenditure!!
I shall not be going back to The Karavados Beach Hotel again!

" The Karavados Beach Hotel at first... "

The Karavados Beach Hotel at first glance we had mixed emotions it looked abit to sercluded but the view of the surrounding mountains were breath taking.
Once arriving at the reception we had no welcoming and the receptionist just pointed to a room on a small map of the complex and said "your room", which was 2 buildings away from the main building itself.
We were told when booking the holiday a sub-charge of £10 was compulsary for a sea view, but what we gathered were that all the rooms were facing the sea. So the charge should of either been included in the holiday price or not at all.
We were on half board basis so we gathered we'd save a few pennies on the food but when we sat to eat dinner on the first night we were shocked that there was not a buffet style service in order to select the food you liked. Instead we were given dinner which infact seemed to cater for just vegetarians (being the cheapest option), with salad, rice and chips being compulsary.
For breakfast we thought you couldnt really go wrong but we had the option of boiled eggs, sliced cheese and what looked like spam, slices of stale bread from the night befores dinner and slices of marble cake. Tea and coffee was often cold or if you were lucky luke warm and orange squash which was used from tap water rather than bottled.
The surrounding area was completed surcluded with a beach only a small walk down a steep incline but only enough to hold maybe 10 people on and the rest being all rocks. We were told by our tour operator that we were only 1km to the nearest supermarket but infact it was 12km to Agostoli (the capital city) which cost 30 euros all round trip.
Without a car or bike to explore the island we were basically stuck at the apartment with no means of shopping, entertainment or even pool activities. Most days it felt like you had to whisper in order not to upset the fellow guest!!
If you are thinking about exploring the island you must definitely rent a car but make sure its from a reputatable car firm as the local independant ones charge you just as much but you will be guaranteed not to be insured or have to pay an overpriced excess fee!!
One positive thing to say about the Karavados, it was very clean although if your lucky like me, you'll have the cleaner walk in on you naked straight from the shower, even though i clearly stating "one minute, i'm just coming".
