The apartments are near to the centre of the town of Kranjska Gora, with its many bars restaurants and shops. The Apartments Vitranc is a comfortable self catering accommodation in a pretty alpine town.
I and my wife decided to take an apartment instead of a hotel room so that we didn't have to get up for breakfast, and had more space to ourselves. The apartment was fine, a modern block next to the Prisank hotel, with views of the mountains. It was clean and well-furnished, though the beds were on the hard side. The cooking facilities were basic: a two-ring electric hob and a filter coffee maker. No kettle or toaster. We found we could make tea by putting a teabag in the place of the coffee filter. We ate out every night, though you can get half-board, eating a hot buffet at the hotel. We were glad we chose Vitranc.
Kranjska Gora is mainly a ski resort, so it is not full in the summer, when we went. It is on a flat valley floor surrounded by mountains, which rise from the edge of the village on one side and from a few hundred metres away on the other. There are wonderful walks starting straight from the village, or from the top of the chair lift on the edge of the village, or a local bus ride away. We found that 'The Julian Alps of Slovenia - mountain walks and short treks' was an excellent guide. We got it from Waterstones. The walks can be a bit strenuous, and some involve a bit of scrambling. They are worth it for the unspoiled countryside and the views. We loved the place.
The locals are developing KG as a summer resort. They have added a toboggan that runs down a monorail from the top of the chair lift, which is fun once or twice. A toboggan carries only one, and you control the brake. They have also added a hard-core downhill mountain bike track with lots of jumps. You see lads going up in the chair lift with their full-face helmets and body armour, and full-suspension bikes hanging off the end of the chairs. Check your insurance if you want to try this.
There are several agencies that will take you in a jeep over the mountains to go rafting, canyoning or kayaking. We used the Juliana.com agency to go rafting, which was exciting.
There are probably a couple of dozen places to eat in KG if you include the hotels. We found all the ones we tried fine, and surprisingly my vegetarian wife could always find a decent meal. There's a cafe called Charlie's which does very good coffee, cakes and ice-cream (especially lemon). Often people were still buying cornets there after ten in the evening.
