" This is ok, I wouldn’t class it as... "

This is ok, I wouldn’t class it as a good 3* but it is ok. Although refurbished relatively recently, looks like it needs doing again (the lifts bounce).
Rooms a good size though the balcony needed good clean and the bathrooms need re tiling. Kitchen had an oily smell that came up through the extractor vent. Bit noisy due to traffic - some rooms noisy due to restaurant entertainment below.
Breakfast good, though not too much choice.
Swimming pool area ok, but if you are going to spend all holiday by a pool this is not the hotel for you. Little noisy due to construction at Raga due to finish in October 06.
Location great for Lido area, taxis, buses, restaurants, shops all on doorstep. Views from some rooms on upper floors fantastic.
Staff friendly and helpful on the whole, though they tend to leave you alone rather than check you need something (suits me fine).
If you can get a good deal on the rooms then is a cheap base for a family holiday. Don’t expect anything approaching a four star though if this is what you are used to.

" First time on the island, took pot... "

First time on the island, took pot luck when booking as there were no reviews of the hotel. Very friendly staff, room and hotel generally were kept in very clean condition, bed sheets changed every day. Considering this is a three star hotel, we doubt we would have enjoyed the holiday more had it been a five star.
The Food was very good, the swimming pool kept clean and warm. The balcony overlooked the road but didn't effect things at all.
Fair distance from Funchal centre but there is a courtesy bus along with regular busses and taxis should you not want to walk, if you do though you'll pass plenty of excellent restaurants on route (particularly the Paradise, first class food in a first class setting).

Reception staff very helpful and friendly but found some of the staff not so.
Breakfast adequate nothing outstanding. This hotel has more for Germans, Portuguese Scandinavians visitors than English - there was no English information book available.
Has a small paddling pool for the younger children but the main pool is 1.2m to 1.6m deep so not so good for the younger non swimmers. Never had any difficulty getting a sun lounger or parasol no matter what time of day we went to the pool. Has a small play area for children but has a wall which the children could lean over which has a large drop. You are able to get drinks from the pool area but are very expensive (4.8 euro for a magnum ice cream and a coffee - average price out for this was 3 euro).
Lots of building work going on in the main hotel area of Funchal which is a pity.
Had car hire for 2 weeks and had been warned that the roads were awful. Found that the roads were very good and getting around was easy - even the mountain roads were wide enough for 2 cars! They certainly know how to build tunnels in Maderia.
Recommend get out and about, the island is stunning especially Nuns Valley and the cost for drinks and food is a lot cheaper then Funchal. Glad we had a car as the cost of trips were expensive and saw an awful lot of the island.
Arriving at Maderia airport is an experience - you do a u-turn to land (not as bad as it sounds).
Overall impression - hotel - OK but stayed in better - return to hotel - no.
Return to Maderia - definitely would pick a better hotel and explore some more the island - it is breathtakingly beautiful.
