Hotel Raga has friendly, helpful staff, it is spotlessly clean and the pool area is great. Breakfast was of a good standard but we didn't try the evening meal as I must admit it didn't look all that special. It was very difficult to get vegetarian meals in any restaurant... more

This hotel was near to the Lido and a short bus journey from Funchal. On the positive side it was very clean; the staff were helpful. No notice boards in Reception about when to expect the Tour Representative. Top tip - purchase a bus ticket for 50 cents and local bus... more

We found the Hotel Raga a worthwhile experience, after reading some of the negative press, its staff were always charming, the room was of good value for the money we paid. Restaurant was well staffed with breakfast fare to suit most tastes I believe. The bus stop was... more

Newly re-furbished Raga Hotel was an excellent base for our week in Funchal. The restaurant and its staff were excellent. Apart from some small niggles, not much space around wash basin and lack of storage in bedroom, the room was very nice and was kept clean and tidy. Nice... more

Hotel a little tired but very clean, and staff friendly. However we found the MAIN road, which is situated between the hotel and the sea to be very noisy in our 6th floor room. The only quiet time seemed to be between 0300 to 0600 hrs. As a result of the traffic noise... more

A bit run down and old fashioned looking, a bit of a high tower blot on the landscape, waiters and a receptionists with the charm of lurch, but apart from that it was OK. Probably one of the cheapest large hotels in Funchal, but the swimming pool was OK and well... more

super time here
we booked the week before we went and where pleasently surprised. we knew it had a refit which was very nice and modern. the breakfasts are ok, plenty of choice. the only thing is we did not have the evening meal. this was good by all accounts. the only gripe is that there could have been tea making facilities in the rooms, kettle cups and tea.
Stylish Hotel
After booking the holiday, we were quite relieved to see the reviews getting better. Following a little misunderstanding on arrival more due to the tour operator than the hotel - be aware that if you are on the early flights out of the UK you could find your room unavailable before 2.00pm - we were delighted with the standard of our rooms. The design is contemporary and spacious, with laminate floors, dark wood fittings with light walls and all rooms having space for a sitting area, although the paintings can be a bit interpretive! Bathrooms are excellent with showers capable of knocking you sideways. Other reviewers have suggested breakfast can be repetitive, but being buffet style it's only as repetitive as you choose to make it. On the menu daily were at least four varieties of freshly baked bread, croissants, sliced bread for toast, all with butter, jam, marmalade or honey; three varieties of cereal; sausage and/or bacon, tomatoes, baked beans, scrambled/boiled eggs; ham, cheese and salami; fresh and tinned fruit with yoghurt; two varieties of fruit juice, coffee, hot chocolate and about six types of tea. The 'English' side of the breakfast was a bit disappointing, but the freshly baked bread was to die for, especially the fruit loaf! Be aware that there is about five floors difference between the bottom road and the top road bounding the hotel. It is probably easier to use the three levels of stairs down to the bottom road rather than use the 'ramp' to the top road, its gradient is probably about 1:4. Excellent swimming pool with attentive staff and pool towels provided so, unless you are particularly attached to your own, save the weight on the outward flight to pack your suitcase with Madeira wine for the inbound. The reception staff are knowledgeable and helpful, all with excellent English language, and as we always say when we review hotels, take time to make friends with them, because you'll always gather plenty of local hints. Being B&B, we didn't use the hotel for evening meals (which did seem quite limited when we bothered to take a look at the menu), choosing instead to try a different restaurant each night, never walking further than 400m from the hotel. Quality was generally fairly good but we won't recommend any because we all have our own preferences - just get out and try them. One place we should, and shouldn't if only for the sake of the waistline, recommend is the cake shop 25m from the Estrada Monumental (bottom road) entrance of the hotel towards Funchal - the variety is amazing, all delicious with a fantastic cup of coffee. Overall, a superb hotel, and dog noise? We were at the back of the hotel and anybody who has complained in these postings must be hypersensitive or a cat lover! We were more concerned that it might jump 6m from its garden onto the road!
we loved the hotel raga
just got back on july 16th . after reading the reviews i wasnt looking forward to it .when we got to reception our key was there str8 away and our bags were taken to our room wich was on the 10th floor . to my amazment our room was fantasic. flat screen television lovely decorated and very clean . bathroom was tiled better than mine lol. air con to. the view was unbelievable . i couldnt fault it at all . the staff are very helpful . when you get your sunbeds he comes with towels for you and umbrella if you need one . plenty for breakfast although the same evry morning but plenty to choose from . the whiole place as been refurbished and looks great . i wondered into a few 5 star hotels there and found that our one was much friendlier and more cosy . id they have the bbq night on the thurs or what ever night then i suggest you try it it was very good for 20 euros with wine . on the whole 1st class
NOT impressed
Overall the hotel is nowhere near 4 star standard. The food is buffet only, very basic and and offers little choice. Room service was very poor and complaints were not taken seriously. For example a problem with the tv was never fixed (although reception tried to pretend it had been). When we complained that the plug could not be removed to drain water from the bath the room service laughingly produced a knife to lever the plug out, but of course the same problem recurred every time we used the bath. The room was cold and the heating never worked. Room service refused to even try to fix the problem. Don't make any calls from the room unless you want to pay 3 Euros per minute, within Europe! There was no entertainment programme. Very disappointing.
recommend the raga
We booked this hotel having read the comments in Trip Advisor. This was a lovely hotel - has been renovated to boutique-style rooms. I would recommend a room with a sea view as this includes a balcony with table and chairs. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were OK but always the same- selection of cold meats/cheese fruit - hot food looked dull and greasy. We booked B&B I believe the evening meals were OK but with a limited choice. Not a hotel for children - located between two roads. Easy bus routes into Funchal. Two Irish-style pubs in the hotel zone and worth checking out the restauarants and bars up the steep hill behind the hotel. I would recomend Qasbah & Il Basilico to eat at night both in the Hotel Zone down near the sea front.
Enjoyed
This was our first holiday together and it was for just the two of us. We thought the hotel was clean and tidy. We were on the sixth floor so had fantastic views. We did not book a sea view but got one anyway. Breakfast was good every morning. Never stayed in for a meal in the evening found looking around area and finding good eating houses was very good. The location was good for access to eveything, Lots of bus routes and lots of taxis outside all the time. The tour guides were really good. There was a dog barking but it didn't disturb us as we had the balcony door closed most of the time. You do need to take tea and coffee making faciltities with you. The tv in the room only had two english channels on it. Recommend the Casino night out for a meal and cabaret with the can-can girls. I had a birthday whilst I was there and the maid had seen my birthday cards up and reported it to manager and I had a bottle of bubbly send to the room for us. (Very nice). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
better than expected
booked up on xmas day. read reveiws boxing day, was not expecting much at all. wow the tired rooms, worn out carpets, traffic noise, the hotel has had a massive facelift and looks really good. clean and bright new carpets double glazing and very nice decor. could do with a better lounge area for drinks/relaxing but still a couple af areas being refurbed so perhaps this will be the lounge. breakfast adequate fresh and clean. would not use the hotel to eat in the evening as we like to eat out lots of good restaurants around & funchal is only 10 mins on the bus. good location
Newly Refurbished
My wife and I have stayed several times at Raga Hotel, we find the staff to be friendly, polite and very helpful. The hotel officially reopend after a massive refurbishment on 14 December 2006. At 55€ per night bed and breakfast it is superb value for money. The hotel is ideally located and close to all major local attractions. Taxi rank opposite, also a regular 'bus service to the city centre. Some but not all local restaurants have a no smoking area.
Hotel Raga.A better than expected budget location
I returned yesterday form a weeks holiday b/b at the Raga.Couldnt understand some of the complaints e.g.barking dogs, green bathroom tiles etc. Some folk will complain about anything. The room was clean and towels daily changed. The breakfast buffet style was varied and plentiful. The pool area was pleasant .Noise factor from the road not nearly as bad as I had read about.Poolside towels were provided and parasols against the suns rays.Didnt have evening meals at the hotel.,so cant comment.Entertainment was quite o.k.Bit repetitious, but my friend and I went to listen ,each evening ,as a bit of a habit!!!All in all very happy with the Raga. All staff smartly dressed and happy to help at all times.Would recommend as a budget hotel for holidaymakers not wanting luxury, and not making petty complaints.
Fantastic Holiday
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Raga,27/02/06 to 06/03/06 on a Thomson winter break. We had an anniversary and my birthday whilst there. Arrived to a 'Happy Anniversary' display of flowers, basket of fruit and a bottle of sparkling wine in the room, another bottle of sparkling wine on my birthday. Could not fault the cleanliness of the rooms clean towels and sheets every day. Yes I agree it is due for an update, beds are hard but what do you expect, we paid £239 each for B&B! Breakfast was more than adequate with a very good choice of cooked food, cold meats, cheese and fresh fruit. The only fault I could find was there were no tea, coffee making facilities in the room. We took our own kettle etc.The Island itself was fantastic, we went for the scenery and flowers, we certainly were not dissapointed, it was breathtaking.A truly wonderful week, we would certainly use Hotel Raga again!
