Just back from the Babalu -...

Jul 2007, Mrs Jane Jackson

Just back from the Babalu - apartments are very basic. The maid cleaned, changed towels and beds every other day even done the dishes. The children's entertainer Dave was a god sent for the kids. He kept them amused for hours during the day playing killer pool, 5 a-side football and water-polo. Then in the evening they had a mini disco learning different dances and playing games. After the kids entertainment it was the parents turn for fun which included Euro bingo and live shows which ranged from singers to snakes shows and shows which the adults could join in. All the bar staff are also very friendly. The only fault that we found with staying here is that the place is surrounded with stray cats.
A big hi to Dave the rave, thanks a million for keeping us all amused for the 2 weeks it won't have been as enjoyable if it hadn't been for you being there, Dean and Becky are still dancing away to your CD

Jul 2007, Miss L Averiss

The apartments were fine they were kept clean they all overlook the swimming pool (which was kept very clean) and have large balconies.
The poolside bar plays music all day which was great, and the food there was fine for a snack, we ate out in the evening at the Europa centre because it was so close and they had loads of great places to eat, this is also the best place for a full English breakfast!
We got taxis most places because the were so cheap and our little boy got tired walking the hills, they arrive straight away if u order them at reception.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and some speak very good English. The entertainment was fun at night Dave taught the children dances then they had certificates at the end of the holiday for doing well, after the childrens fun there was bingo then a show for the adults we had the reptile show, robbie williams, karaoke, there was something different every night.
Dave also does games around the pool in the day which everyone can join in.
Our favourite beach was Amadores and this the best place to watch the sunset.
Our holiday at the Babalu was fantastic and i would certainly go back again!!

When staying at the Babalu, I thought oh my god how high up are we, but after my welcome meeting with Bill the rep, it helped me realise that everything was not how it seemed.
20 minutes of my time I learnt everything I needed to know and had a brill holiday thanks Bill.
The hotel was basic but that’s all you need when you’re on holiday. The staff at Linekers bar in the main commercial centre was ace.
The party night was great and I won myself a bog roll at deal or no deal, sun was shining and I will def book with Airtours again, thanks.

Jun 2007, Miss T Cowey

Just returned from a 2 week stay at the Babalu. We’ve had a wonderful time. The apartments are very clean but basic; the maid visited every other day with clean towels and the bedding was changed once per week.
The hotel receptionist always took time to talk to us, to ask where we had been that day. The three pools were great for my eight year old boy, we spent allot of time around the pool during the day up to 7 hours some days while he played with a variation of children, English, Spanish ( I believe they own a apt in the Babalu) and 2 boys from Denmark, all very polite, pleasant people.
We went to the bottom commercial centre on a night for nightlife entertainment 3 euros in a taxi, definitely try m&m's bar near the back of the centre on the 2nd floor for really cheap drinks approx 3 euros for a Smirnoff ice and a pint pf local lager.
The Tropicana was a really fun pub for adults and kids with quizzes and free shots if you answer correctly.
We’ve been to Gran Canaria 3 times now (different resorts) puerto rico is by far the best, but be aware in every resort the touts are there trying to get you to visit Anfi beach, even at our reps meeting a anfi rep was there.
They try to bribe you with a 42 euro voucher to use off the price of excursions, free fags, booze, just to get you there, they even pay your taxi fare.
Anfi is a beautiful hotel complex with its own man-man beach, but once your there its a whole day wasted as its a time share and they give you the hard sell for over 3 hours and try to get you to sign up. As long as you stay 3 hrs or more the reps get paid, but what a nuisance and they wont take no for a answer.
We took a boat trip to Morgan market 10 euros return, 6 euros for kids, fantastic, be prepared to haggle to get a bargain. Also palmitos park 26 euros a great day out, parrot shows, bird of pray show, and all kinds of animals you can think of. It was like walking round Jurassic park.
We had a fabulous holiday, cant wait to go again.

Jun 2007, Mrs J C  Snelling

For my first visit aboard I had a fantastic time. Apartments were very clean, the rooms where cleaned on a regular basis, the pool was so clean it was unbelievable.
Yes the bar food was plain but for that quick meal you had a good choice, but Babalu was so handy for a lot of other places, hey use the Taxis, boy they where clean and cheap.
Please do not listen to any of the negative remarks, as I'd disagree with them straight down.
The reason they did not get 10/10, when you arrive late at night all places are closed, and no water for making a drink or a welcome drink pack would have been a handy thing, but hey who's really complaining? I'm not.

PROS: - clean - friendly staff - nice pools - great views
CONS: - small apartments - music blaring out from 10am till midnight non stop - apartment floods when having a shower - 150 sun beds but only 8 umbrellas so no escape from sun - smell of drains by poolside bar.
I will not be returning.

Jun 2007, Mr A Wilmot

These apartments were great and ideal for the use, with the Europa centre a 2 minute walk away and stunning views. I would recommend this place to anyone.
The apartment its self is not very big but still is very useful. The atmosphere around the pool is great, with music being played all day with great food and drink being served all day at reasonable prices.
We where dubbed as the Babalu mafia because there was 24 of us there... but it still was a great laugh because of the friendly people and staff in and around the place.
The place is very enjoyable and seriously if anyone wants a good break away... then the Babalu is the place you want to be
Great, thanks, Thornes Babalu Mafia!!

We had a great time at the Babalu, fantastic view from top floor balconies.
The pools cater for the young to the old with a pool bar staff are all helpful.
Rooms are basic and be prepared to hire your toaster and kettle, but the Barbacoa does a great breakfast.
Maid service is good clean towels & sheets every other day.
All in all we had a great time and weren’t disappointed, well worth a visit. It is at the top of the hill and path can be quite slippery.
A good steak in the Lord Byron.

Ignore the bad reviews! I had a fantastic time.
The rooms are clean with massive balconies that get the sun all day long. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The pool area is great.
The beach is 2.50 Euros in a taxi. The main shopping centre is 5 Euros is a taxi. The Europa Centre is a 2 min walk across the road. If going to Europa, eat at Garoe and drink at Extreemz bar.
The Barbacoa is best for breakfast. We tried to walk down to the port; I wouldn’t recommend it, very steep and slippery!
These apartments are great for young, old, couples, and families! I can’t wait to go back!

We've just got back from a great...

May 2007, Miss H Liptrot

We've just got back from a great holiday in Gran Canaria.
Like previous reviewers was apprehensive as people had given it such bad reviews, but on arrival was surprised as was expecting Fawlty Towers!
Yes the reception is on the small side but so what, you’re not going to be staying in the reception area. And it doesn’t look anything like faulty towers!!
It was clean, had friendly and helpful staff, and has a seating area and information from your tour operator.
Getting to the rooms yes they weren't 5* luxury but you’re not paying for 5 star. The maids came to clean the apartment 5 times a week, which I think was more than satisfactory.
The pool area was fine- yes the sunbeds are wired together but pull them apart to give yourself room between each one! Which I more than managed each day!
Bar food was bar food wasn't expecting Michelin star food.
I would recommend the Babalu if you want a base for your holiday everything is accessible as taxi's are very cheap, as Puerto Rico is very hilly and if you don’t want 4-5* star treatment then this will more than satisfy your needs!

Apr 2007, Mrs K Thorpe

I thought that the hotel was in a great location, we had the Europa centre opposite the hotel and restaurants and bars.
This was great if you wanted a quiet evening or if this was your starting place for a night out.
The only problem with the restaurants is they pester you to go in them and this get frustrating by the end of the holiday!!
You can get a taxi to the main town which has club, bars, restaurants shops and English food (Well McDonalds!) for 3 Euros and these come past the hotel all the time or you can catch a bus at the top of the road.
Over all I thought that the hotel was great, there was one large pool and a small deep pool.
There was a bar open all day and in too the late hours with really friendly staff , make sure you keep your eye for Gino!
I think this is a good hotel for a cheap holiday.
