nice hotel lovely location
from stellacurtis
stayed for just 1 night on 24th december before we moved to our apartment in las americas. Hotel beautiful inside and out, room was spacious and very clean and well presented. Had ground floor room with terrace. no complaints with room standard. Where half board, never made breakfast. Evening meal was buffet style which was average at best, however they offered us an a la carte meal on top of the buffet (not sure if this is offered every night or x amount per stay) but my partner chose beef fillet which was cooked to perfection we couldnt complain. Location was great, nice if you like walking and having a look about. To be fair we paid £17 for 1 night half board (an error on thomsons web page should have been about £230 for 1 night!!) so i cant complain at all - if i'd paid £230 for the night i wouldnt have been happy about the buffet style food quality. if you can get a good deal i'd defo recommend this hotel
Good standard 4 star

We stayed here for 6 nights and was allocated a room on the 4th floor with a sea view. The room was fine except for the terrible bed, it was the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in and that includes camping! We had the sun on our balcony in the afternoon, which was nice as we could sit out and watch the sunset, usually around 6pm at this time of year.I must mention the chamber maid as she was excellent. Everywhere was spotless and little touches like the towel sculptures in the bathroom, were really nice. I cannot fault the food at all, we found it was good quality and a nice variety, although if you were staying longer than a week I can imagine that it gets a bit repetitive. We took the option to eat at the pool bar one evening, which was Spanish themed, set menu and waiter service. It was excellent and made a nice alternative to the queues at the buffet. It was also very quiet as not many people seem to take up the option( more fool them)For breakfast you can sit outside on the terrace but be warned you have to get in first thing as the people who sit out there do not move for a least two hours! The same can be said for the sunbeds, as the previous reviewer pointed out, you need to get up early to get a bed. It's a shame that the hotel who has a policy of no reserving sunbeds with towels, doesn't have the strength of it's convictions to enforce it. The same towels are left on beds all day with no one on them, annoying. There is entertainment every evening, which is the usual Euro stuff, not our thing so we gave it a miss. Instead we headed out along the resort where there are some nice quiet little bars to have a drink. As you get closer to Las Americas the busier and louder it gets. This is where you need to be ,if you want full on night life, not for us. Overall this is a nice 4 * hotel, good seafront location, nice landscaped gardens, good food and nice staff.
Very good, but not perfect

My wife and I have just returned from a ten-night stay at the Riu Palace Tenerife (Aug 2007). Booking was through Thomson in the UK. We stayed two years ago at the Riu Palace Maspalomas in Grand Canaria and really enjoyed the hotel, but we were looking for somewhere that had better options for walking in the evening (which was a bit lacking at Maspalomas). My parents have stayed at both hotels and recommended Tenerife due to its beach promenade, which runs along the coast of Costa De Adeje (Playa Des Americas). The hotel layout is upside down. The reception is on floor six and the pool and grounds are accessed via floor one. This provides a very nice patio area on floor six, with views overlooking the grounds and coast where you can have breakfast or sit in the evening and have a drink. The standard of the hotel was very good. Food: you have the option of eating in either the main or poolside restaurant in the evening. Breakfast is in the main restaurant. Breakfast is the usual options of cold meat, cheeses and then the usual hot foods. Omelettes are made to order and the standard of food and presentation is very good overall. A nice touch at the Riu Palace is the complementary sparkling wine that is available at breakfast. In the evening, you have two options in the main restaurant, the buffet or set menu that is waiter served. The poolside restaurant has three rotating set menus dependant upon day. We had no issues with the food at all. The buffet selection was very good and pretty much catered for those who like chips with everything to more traditional local dishes. The pool area is very nice with two reasonable size pools and a children’s splash one. There is one largish bar and the poolside restaurant. There is also a small bar near to the promenade walk with clear views out to sea (our favourite). The main area around the pools and restaurants are paved but there is also a sandy area with sun loungers that is adjacent to the poolside restaurant. One thing to point out is that hotel policy is that sun loungers are not supposed to be reserved before 08:00, but the more popular areas around the pool get reserved very promptly after 0800 hrs. Coming down after breakfast (0800 until 1030 hrs) meant you had a limited selection when we stayed in August. Arriving at 1400 hrs on the first day, we were amazed that not one bed was available on the paved area around the pools. It was not a problem for us as early risers, but worth noting if you like to lie in. This is one of the few complaints we had, the evening entertainment. It consisted of the same band playing virtually the same songs every night, except on two evenings (Friday and Sunday) when we had shows lasting an hour. If you like to be entertained in the evening, then you may be a bit disappointed. The location we thought was excellent. The hotel grounds end at the promenade walk that effectively starts at the Sheraton and H10 Hotels that are next door to the Riu and runs along the beach line for miles to Los Cristianos. We would say the Riu had the best-unobstructed views of the sea (so long as you get the popular sun beds) than any of the other hotels, we looked at (H10, Sheraton, Bahia and Anthelia). Around the corner is also a small shop if you want a morning stroll for the newspaper or water (out the front entrance and second road on you right; about 3 min walk). Walking up to the Anthelia Hotel was very pleasant (15-20 minutes). There is also a new shopping centre adjacent to the Anthelia with designer shops and jewellers. Further past the Anthelia (heading towards Los Cristianos), it becomes very apparent that you are leaving the surroundings of the predominantly four and five star hotels. On the room front, the standard was the same as the other Palace hotel, very comfortable and tastefully decorated. We had a ground floor terrace room. The hotel is roughly horseshoe in shape and so the rooms at the side do not have particularly great views. We were in room 362 and it worked well for us though. That side of the hotel faces onto the Sheraton (looking from the sea at the hotel it will be on your left), but our terrace had a good covering of palm trees in front so we could sit on the terrace in privacy. We also got half the terrace in the shade at about 1700 hrs onwards. Other rooms did not seem to fare to well though regarding privacy. The opposite side of the hotel has a reasonably busy path next to it (leads to/from the beach/Riu Arecas which is just behind the Palace) so walking along it you can look down onto or into most of the rooms. Also worth mentioning that the front facing sea view rooms would get very little reprieve from the Sun, ones further around the easterly side got a bit of shade if that is what you prefer. I would say room selection is a little more critical at this hotel than others I have been to if you are a bit fussy about your view and privacy. Overall, would we recommend the Riu Palace Tenerife? The answer has to be YES. Baring the entertainment and having to sort the sun beds early the stay was excellent. Good food, nice room, nice surroundings that are well kept and a very good location.
As Good As It Gets
from wefstag
We stayed there for 1 week at the start of April 2007. The weather was lovely. Most of the other previous comments make sense - the location is fantastic, front line to the sea, with a great promenade that is good for early morning jogging if you're into that sort of thing. But equally as good for an evening stroll. We could easily have stayed at the hotel for all our time in Tenerife, as the food was pretty good and the evening entertainment was OK. But we had lunches and an occasional stroll to the "village" a few hundred yards along the prom which was well worth the effort. This is one of the best hotels we have stayed at - certainly superb value for money. Possibly top of the positives being the staff who, without exception, were professional, friendly and helpful. There were very few negatives, yes the beds are a bit hard (which seems to be is a common failing in Spain), the beach itself just outside the hotel is a bit naff (but there is a good beach 400 metres along the prom) and thereafter I'm struggling. I suppose another negative is that the clientelle is largely German and whilst these people generally make excellent fellow travellers, they do have this neurosis about bagging the best sun loungers. But if like me you don't mind at early morning stroll at 08.01 to make sure you beat them to it, there is not really a problem. One last comment - whilst the Riu Palace is excellent, the Riu Arecas, just behind it, does not seem to be of the same calibre.
Mixed Feelings

A belated review, so not recent and something to bear in mind. We last stayed a week in Apr06 halfboard. It was our 4th visit to the hotel since 1998. Our first 3 visits were great, it was a hotel that suited us. However, the last one was quite disappointing for the following reasons: 1 Hotel staff indifferent - not as customer friendly. 2 Terrace floor rooms are spacious but now in need of updating/better maintenance (burst pipe/flood in bathroom at 2am!) 3 Hotel used to be 5* and attracted a mainly middle class, middle aged german clientele. Now it's 4* and together with cheap prices/deal offerings, the clientele has changed. Men also used to 'dress for dinner' ie. jacket, but not any more, people were turning up in t-shirts & jeans etc. 4 Quality and variety of evening buffet disappointing. 5 Hotel entertainment poor. I am surprised it has such a low popularity rating given that quite a few of the reviews are positive? However, one of the best things about this hotel is its location. Also, you can lounge around the pool (as long as a bed is 'bagged' by 8am!) with the most fantastic uninterrupted view of the sea. My children have loved it here, despite no children's facilities! Will we return this Easter - I think I will research other hotels first?
Disappointing
from Marden8
We booked this hotel anticipating an "A La Carte" experience but were let down. Check-In was great offering us a glass of Sparkling Wine while our passport details were recorded and room allocated. Room had a great location with sea view at the front on the 4th floor. Very clean with plenty of wardrobe space and spacious private balcony. Our 1st dinner experience was disappointing at 8pm with congestion at every buffet table for a very limited selection. This put us off eating in the main dining room, so we opted for the "La Caleta" restaurant by the pool for the rest of our stay which was fantastic. The breakfast buffet had lots to offer, but all the meat was pork based!! Not good for certain faiths! 2 nights of our 10 we ate in the sister Riu Arecas and the buffet dinner was fantastic with a great deal more choice!! To sum up, the holiday was great but the hotel buffet dining could be improved.

My wife and I have stayed here from 1999-2006 inc. and are returning again this year! The Mangement and Staff are 1st.class complimenting the superb quality of food, ambience and location. DONT go if you like "in-your-face"hotels with unruly families(ALL age groups) in a noisy location!
perfect location

The Riu Palace is a great hotel but it is the positon of it on the coast that I particularly liked. I am a big fan of Tenerife (some parts of playa des americas excluded!) and was pleased to find that this Riu hotel was overlooking the sea with unbroken views of the island of la gomera. There is direct access to a costal walkway that runs for miles alond the coast in each direction. A short walk away there is a ice cream palour and a few bars and restaurants opposite a sandy beach with lovely views and further on still, there is a stylish shopping centre and an outdoor market. In the other direction along the coast there are some idyllic seafood restaurants in caletta. The staff at the hotel were so friendly at all times. We were upgraded on arrival to a large ground floor room with french windows onto the garden. The breakfast was outsanding and the buffet at dinner was so good that we only had the a la carte menu once. We especially liked the seafood each evening. There was an interesting selection of evening entertainment and a friendly and busy bar each evening provided in the lobby. Los Cristianos is very close by taxi or bus and has a great market twice a week. There are lots of boat trips from the port there too. The Riu Palace is immaculately clean and the pool area is a delight with lots of facilities two beautiful pools and a lovely restaurant and bar area. I would definitely return to this hotel again. This hotel seems to be popular with older travellers in january/february and a much younger crowd in the summer months.
Lovely and peaceful
from tomandnorma
The hotel is situated in quiet area of Adeje with fantastic views over the sea, some really nice sunsets. We arrived to be met by efficient, friendly, multi-lingual staff who quickly went through the booking in procedures then gave us a complimentary cold drink while our room was readied. The room was spotlessly clean although smaller than the other RIU hotel we stayed in last year on Gran Canaria. TV only had 3 English news channels, but who goes to the Canaries for T.V ? We were lucky and got the second sitting for dinner ( 8pm), the first sitting was a bit early for us at 6 pm. The food was superb with large buffet style service and hot meals being cooked as you wait, carvery and Italian counters, Yumbo !! Breakfasts are a sit anywhere affair, bubbly on the terrace with stunning views, very romantic. Nice to see Spains no smoking policy working. The pool area is huge and you could usually find a sunbed at any time of day, some towel reservations happen mostly by Brits. A good tip is to use the less busy sandy area to the left of the main pool. There were not many kids at the hotel in general which may be a blessing or a curse depending on your circumstances so the pools were quiet. There is a lovely promenade outside the hotel next to the coast that leads you into Adeje (10min walk) Our weeks weather was great 25 c and no cloud for 6 days out of 7, and this was only overcast, we came home with a tan. Sun rise 8am set 7pm This was a lovely hotel which we would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday.
Ants in the Rooms
from SherwoodRanger
The hotel stay was diappointing for the class of hotel it is. We booked it through Thomson a la Carte and the standard did not live up to expectations. The room we booked was a Superior on the next to ground floor and it soon become apparent that there was a serious ant problem. They were in large numbers both in the bathroom sink, on the table in the room and crawling on the walls. When we reported it we were offered an alternative room on the ground floor, but after the hassle of packing everything again, within 24 hrs it soon became apparent that this also had ants. When we reported this we were advised by the staff on reception that this problem was known about in the lower rooms. If this is the case then I think it should be specified in the brochure. Had we known this we certainly would not have stayed at this hotel. On two occasions we ordered breakfast in the room, primarily as one of the room occupants was elderly and had difficulty walking. We ordered some bread rolls and toast on the first morning, but the rolls didn't arrive. All that was offered on the tray to eat for 2 people was 4 slices of toast! The next day the rolls arrived ok, but there were no plates or butter. Surely something as simple as ensuring the contents of a breakfast tray are correct would not be beyond the realms of a 4 star hotel. Apparently, it was.

Having read a few reviews before my stay in this hotel, my expectations were high. I wasn't disapointed. A beautiful hotel in a lovely resort. Standards of cleanliness were very high and the staff couldn't have been any more helpfull. We arrived at night after dinner had... more
