Past glories rescued (in part) by Macdonalds
Apparently this was the first purpose built hotel in the UK. As with may of the older hotels in our cities, I feel that this hotel has seen better days. However, Macdonalds have made a good attempt at keeping time at bay. The rooms have air conditioning and have recently been decorated. I do feel, however, that the foyer and staircase need some urgent work. Breakfast and dinner were of a high standard but poor value for money. All staff were attentive. I woud visit again but eat out at night!
Very good, traditional, a little shabby but adds to the charm!
The Queens has a beautiful facade, with lots of hanging baskets of flowers even at the end of October. Immediately you feel that you are in a classy place. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, including the night staff, but the bar staff were not so friendly. The breakfasts are excellent. It is well worth ordering breakfast to be sent up to your room, any time between 6:45 and 9:45am! They got a little of our order wrong, but we didn't mind seeing as the delivery was only £3.50 extra. The rooms are fine, and the curtains... more
WORST HOTEL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!
Please please please don't stay at this hotel! Book into a bed and breakfast and get better service! Go to a burger van and get better food! Take your own vacuum cleaner and duster because your room will need it! Please someone re-review this tired and tatty former Forte hotel's 4 star status, it must be self appointed I think. Other, much better hotels, in the area are The Kandinski and The Thistle so check them out first. Only stay at the Queens if desperate, you don't mind roughing it and they have low rates on Lateroom.com
Tired and noisy
Stayed at this hotel for our wedding anniversary and was very disappointed with the standard . The room was hot with no air conditioning, the net curtains were very grubby and the overall decor was 'tired'. The main rooms were in desperate need of an overhaul, carpets stained and threadbare on the stairs and corridors. It looked as if nothing had been changed since the 70s. Although we thought we had a good deal on the price it was still too much money for what it offered. One plus point was that the staff were friendly.<br... more
40th Birthday treat!
My husband booked this hotel as a surprise 40th birthday treat, unfortunately the four poster room he booked was not available at the last minute but they made up for it by giving us a bottle of champagne and bowl of fruit. Overall the hotel was lovely, clean and friendly, but the top floor room was a little hot on a summers nights and quite noisy with the windows open, will be better once the air conditioning is installed the reason we couldn't have the original room - so they said!
Not up to standard
Stayed for a week in May on business. The rooms were of a decent size and the bathroom was clean and roomy. First impressions were that the hotel caters for the older generation and not much else. All public areas in need of a refurb. Real problems with the service from the staff. Very impolite and ungracious. It felt like it was a chore to serve us. Unfortunately this was not just a one off, it was continuous through out the week. Overall not recommended.
An expensive let down
Stayed for 2 nights as a treat but I wish we'd gone elsewhere. Communal areas have worn carpets and chipped paint work. Our room had thick black mould on the sash windows and stained upholstery. The paint work in the bathroom was also chipping off. Reception staff were very friendly but the breakfast service was poor. The waiters/waitresses let the plates stack up and we were left to our own devices with no offer of extra coffee or toast. Cooked breakfast was also rather small. I have had much better service/comfort from hotels that... more
Queens has seen better days
The Queens has a lovely location at the top of the main gardens in Cheltenham and close to the main shopping and business district. We stayed for two busy nights (tourgroups-a-plenty) in July and our room was very small - difficult to relax and spread out. The dining room in the hotel is too small to cater for busy times and there were queues for breakfast. The menu advertised buffet cheeses and meats, but these were all processed and tasteless. The carpet throughout the hotel is quite worn and stained, and the bar area was dominated by... more
Terrific place to stay
Very nice hotel set right at the top of the promenade in Cheltenham. The room was very lovely and spacious and included hair dryer, iron, ironing board, trousers press, mini refrigerator (unstocked- which I liked since I could place things I wanted in there),and complimentary coffee, tea, biscuits, and toiletries. There was plenty of space to store belongings for a lengthy stay. The bathtub was quite slippery and care must be taken to place the mat securely before stepping in. Water pressure was very good and the temperature easily... more
