Macdonald White Hart Hotel

Very clean, very friendly lovely food in the restraunt. The only down side was the long wait at breakfast as every one seemed to get there about 9.45a.m (sunday), one lady had been waiting an hour.

UK hotel rooms can often be a bit disappointing; small, frumpy and overpriced. Our room (#224) was quite the opposite. Very large and bright, extremely well decorated with muted colours, tasteful furnishings and even a 4-poster bed. There were thoughtful touches throughout such as heated towel rack, high-end toiletries and opening windows. The front desk staff were perhaps a little jaded, but certainly efficient. The lobby is a bit run-down, but in a funny, Fawlty Towers way, complete with ageing eccentrics taking tea in the lobby.... more

I was a little skeptical about this hotel since it was old. But I was surprised to find that it was wonderful. The rooms were very large, clean, and recently updated and I was in the older, original part of the hotel. The lobby is smokey but so is all of Europe. The location was perfect and the pub across the street (The Cloister) was filled with locals. I would definitely stay at this hotel.

The White Hart is in a brilliant location, near the cathedral, shops and the many pubs. The room we stayed in was at the back of the hotel and was very comfortable. We were really surprised at the very tatty interior, particularly the communal areas. The carpet is threadbare and has sticky tape all over it. The internal decorations look grubby and faded. The hotel location is perfect, just a short walk to the gates to enter the cathedral close. In fact, step out of the front door and look up and see the awesome sight of Salisbury Cathedral's spire towering above the wall. The food in the hotel is excellent. Okay, one BIG problem. We arrived late at night and our non-smoking room, for which we would have paid if we had failed to turn up, had been given to someone else, and we had to have a smoking room, the only room available. It really was almost smoking, too, the smell was so bad! Had to get clean towels as these stank of smoke. Turns out most of the rooms are smoking rooms, a bad decision. Bed was comfortable, bathroom fine, decorations nice. Breakfast was very good. Kind receptionist did try to find us a room in another hotel, to no avail.... more

Good central location with cathedral, shops & main areas easliy accessible on foot. Hotel rooms a little on the small side but have everything you require for a very comfortable stay & the staff are extremely accomodating & friendly. In our opinion, the standard of cuisine in the restaurant equally any top London restaurant but at a fraction of the price & the level of service is exemplorary. - Our one regret is that we didn't book for DBB as one night we were unable to book for dinner due to it's popularity & had to eat elsewhere. The White Hart Hotel is a classic English Hotel. The whole hotel is very traditional, yet also comfortable. The staff was the best that we encountered in England. The location is superb, just outside the gates of Salisbury Cathedral, which by the way, is a can't miss attraction. Be sure to take the tower tour of the Cathedral. It is a great guided tour. We used Salisbury as a base to also tour Stonehenge and Old Sarum. Both highly recommended.

After a long trip by plane and car, we did not know what to expect of the hotel for our first night in England. We were highly impressed, and quite happy with our decision to stay at the White Hart. The room was very modern, clean and comfortable. Staff was helpful, and the hotel was in a great location to see the whole town by foot. 3-star rating may be a little low, particularly given the dive we stayed at in London a few days later with the same rating! Lovely, comfortable hotel located near Salisbury Cathedral and just 2 blocks from the heart of the town. The lobby furnishings gave the feeling of a country house, with lots of squishy sofas and armchairs by the fire, with books to read, games to play, and puzzles to work. The rooms, while small, were quite nice. We had 4 rooms in this hotel, only one facing on St. John Street.
