Macdonald Leeming House Hotel reviews

1 / 10
Apr 2007, Mr E Olympic

The rooms were shabby and in need of repair, every floorboard moved and made a loud noise when walk upon. Great if you want to know when your neighbours go for an early breakfast. The only thing holding the floorboards in place seemed to be the well worn carpet, which in... more

welcoming and charming
Having read some of the reviews, we were naturally anxious when we received a gift of two nights from our son at Leeming House. However, from the beginning the staff were helpful and obliging. They changed the dates of our visit immediately on request. On arrival, the receptionist was friendly and welcoming. The room was spotless, the beds comfortable and the bathroom the cleanest I have encountered in a hotel for a long time. The restaurant, although very busy on the first morning was efficient and we weren't waiting for any length of... more
What a Disappointment
This hotel has a great location but it's service standards costs and staff quality let it down. We use hotels throughout the UK and this hotel is way overpriced throughout for what it is.
Very diappointing service and poor management
My wife and I stayed at the Leeming house Hotel which we have so for over 14 years, and in that time had very good service from the hotel, but last year was a disaster and was all caused by the very poor service in the dining room and the attitude of the management. Service was so slow some nights it was 45 mins to an hour before we received our first course. I asked before booking last year if they did a low fat menu and was assured that they did, and on arrival at the hotel asked the same question and was also assured that they did. When... more
Management response from GMLeeming

We are always pleased to receive constructive criticism and are happy to respond to it, however, as this review refers to a visit over a year ago it does make it difficult. Since July 2007 several changes have taken place here at Leeming. The bedrooms have all been refurbished, a new management team is in place and we have just been awarded 3 rosettes for fine dining from the AA. We have a young and enthusiastic team here at Leeming and always try to give the best possible service. We always endeavour to cater for all our guests needs and usually always respond to written comments, either from our customer services department or from the Hotel itself. We know we can't please all the people all the time but we certainly try our hardest here at Leeming.

Pretty disappointing for the price
No business centre so no internet if you don't have a laptop. No minibar. No leisure centre. Nothing for kids. 5 tv channels. we ordered childrens menu for room service and it took them half an hour to tell us the prices! It was expensive and the walls are so thin you could hear the person next door snoring. The breakfast was good. The staff were nice and the bedlinen was fresh and clean, however. Just overpriced and poor on services.
Disappointment
We had a very disappointing stay at Leeming House. The view from the terrace is without doubt one of the most stunning around Ullswater however you do require a certain standard of accomodation. Our stay fell short of our expectation and we were not the only guests that evening to feel the same way. Service in the hotel was poor/non existent. The room was a good size, nicely decorated but dirty. Food was pleasant but overpriced and the dining room, Blue Room, was very cramped, drinks were also overpriced. Apart from the view... more
Unfriendly website
I booked at this hotel using the Hotel's website and later needed to cancel my booking wherupon I was told that my credit card had already been charged and I would be unable to cancel. This was a whole week before our visit and yet the Manager of the Hotel insisted that their Terms and Conditions associated with special rate offers stipulate that bookings may not be cancelled (even with good cause!) I re-visited the website and eventually found the aforementioned Terms and Conditions (which due to the layout of the website, certainly aren't... more
wonderful setting
Spent a very enjoyable weekend here and walking the surrounding fells and guess what! I didn't die! Really nice room, not the best in the hotel, but clean and comfortable. Staff were very friendly. Food was excellent and though service was a little slow at breakfast, our time was spent watching red squirrels on the bird feeder. Lovely grounds leading down to the lake and all in all it was a wonderful location. May be a little isolated for some, ie not in walking distance of a pub or village, but one can be very relaxed here. Had a drink... more
Relaxing Stay in a beautiful house.
I have two dogs and wanted a getaway for our wedding anniversary. I was impressed that they would welcome dogs and we were allocated a room that opens straight on to the grounds. The dogs loved it - especially the rabbits, there are lots on the grounds and they wanted to chase them. We had not taken them away before and was worried how they would be. The house gives you an experience of a victorian house and the gardens lead straight down to the lake. We had dinner booked, ordered the champers and as we sat down we were told our... more
Beautiful hotel let down by a lot of small problems
To sit on the terrace of this hotel on a fine evening and look out over Ullswater to the hills beyond is sublime. And this is the most beautiful hotel in the most delightful of settings. However I can't help feeling that the edge was taken off an otherwise enjoyable stay by a number of problems. The first room they gave us had no running cold water, the second was short of light bulbs. The moderately expensive white wine we ordered for dinner was served warm. There was dirty laundry piled in the corridor for the whole time we were... more
Brilliant! Best hotel to stay at especially if you have dogs!
Really lovely hotel set in gorgeous grounds. You can see on to the lake from all of the rooms at the back of the hotel and it's an amzing view. You can get down to the lake from the grounds of the hotel which is lovely. WE have dogs, i can't beleive they allow dogs in this hotel as it's gorgeous! we were given a room 'suitable for dogs' on the bottom floor. i couldn'd beleive it when i got in it was brill! it was very swish and had obviously just been done up (traditional style) with French Doors out onto the grounds so the dogs... more
