Sep 2006, Mrs E De Maria

Had a wonderful holiday. The staff were really helpful and friendly. Food was lovely, although there wasn’t really all that much choice.
One thing I will say though is that if we ever decide to go back again I wouldn’t take my child as I felt rather uncomfortable with the attention they all showered on her.
If you don’t mind all the hassle of the locals dragging you into their shops then the two closest towns either side of Skanes (ones Monastir and the other I can’t remember!!) are definitely worth a trip to, many bargains to be had!!

Having read all the negative reviews...

Sep 2006, cclareelou

Having read all the negative reviews about the Liberty Hotel , Skanes I was worried to say the least.
We stepped into the hotel lobby and were pleasantly surprised. All the staff at reception and the porter were really helpful. Having never been to Tunisa before I wasn’t sure what to expect. The Hotel itself was immaculate, ok it looked a little tired but nothing a coat of paint wouldn’t rectify. The rooms were spacious and again really clean. We had a fantastic view of the pool area which really started our holiday on fantastically.
After exploring the holiday we went for our first drink, The drinks were the local beer (which isn’t bad) 2 local spirits plenty of soft drinks, tea and coffee and water whenever you wanted. The bar staff were welcoming and didn’t have a problem at all week. The only problem was after dinner at night the bar was only manned by one person and therefore resulted in having to queue.
The food, umm the food. The restaurant was spotless and the any waste and dirty plates were cleared straight away, the waiters were really friendly too. There was always a good selection of salad and bread available at every meal. When it came to the hot selection you had a past , rice and potato at every meal sometimes chips.
Most things were really quite nice the meat was sometimes a little suspicious but not too bad. There was always something to eat; even my 7 year old eat well. Nothing to be worried about at all, although being presented with rabbit didn’t go down too well. I must admit a few children did struggle, I would like to see perhaps a children’s menu available at request.
The entertainment.
My 7 year old daughter loved the kids club and mini disco with Mr Elo. She couldn’t wait to get there most nights. After the children’s disco the entertainment team took over. I have never met such an enthusiastic team in my life, they tried bless them. The all inclusive stopped at 10 at most people went to bed after that, but there was always the American bar which you have to pay in). We weren’t disturbed by any noise at all.
The only problem we did have was with Ali baba , he just wouldn’t leave it alone, in fact my partner had to be forceful to get him to leave off. Plenty of people enjoyed his trips but it wasn’t for us and he couldn’t understand that.
All in all we had a fantastic holiday the hotel was excellent value for money and the beach was beautiful provided you didn’t mind the seaweed, but it was cleared from the beach. The beach sellers didn’t mind you saying no and really weren’t any problem.
Hotel Liberty Have got it 85% right, perhaps water or tea and coffee making facilities in the room would be a nice touch and a kids menu.
My advice go with an open mind kick back and relax, Enjoy !

Sep 2006, Miss A Holt

Hi, my friend and I have recently returned from a week at the liberty, we had a fantastic time. As many others have said above the staff and animation team are what makes your holiday. The weather is fantastic and you'll get a cracking tan.
I really enjoyed the food it is basic and sometimes a little strange but it's good healthy stuff and I ate well. The 1 1/2 hr Turkish massage and sauna is amazing and well worth the £20 (approx) that you pay for it. Back to the animation team, the entertainment in the evening is hilarious as I have never met such enthusiastic and energetic performers in my life!
The American bar is small but fantastic, the animation team are in there every night and they do get you involved. If you’re looking for a holiday where you just want to relax and not go anywhere then this is the hotel for you, I had a ball and would go back! Enjoy x

I went with a friend and 3 teenagers....

Sep 2006, Ms W Bristow

I went with a friend and 3 teenagers. Got home yesterday having had a wonderful time. Having read some of these reviews before we went I was slightly concerned but our experience was obviously much better. We were greeted at 2am with cold drinks and friendly staff. We did the 2 day Sahara trip - long days but a fantastic experience. We also did the pirate ship trip, quad biking and had a massage at the hotel (bliss).
The beach is a 2 minute walk - there was seaweed the first time we went but not the second. The sea is lovely and warm. Some of the hotel staff are a bit grumpy and blunt but most were friendly with a great sense of humour. The blokes selling the separate trips will try and get you to buy initially but, after you have made it clear you are not going to buy, you can just enjoy social chats with them instead. Younger kids did well with an entertainment crew on site who occupied them well - they all appeared to be having fun. The food was not your ordinary English experience with unusual concoctions but we enjoyed experimenting and were full at each meal time.
None of us got ill and the meat we had was all cooked through well. I had an extremely fussy teenager to worry about initially but he managed with the options available, didn't complain (a first for him!) but was obviously more limited than the rest of us. The pool was lovely (but it was true about the Germans with towels on the sun loungers. ha ha). The hotel itself was fantastic, the rooms were adequate and were cleaned daily with fresh towels laid out (one bath towel and hand towel per person). The beer and soft drinks were great but yes there is a large queue forming after 9 o clock where people rush to beat the 10 o clock deadline.
Any transport laid on for trips is late - they are very laid back over time (what the Cornish fondly refer to as 'dreckly'). Agree a taxi price before you set off - by our standards they are very cheap. Yes, you could moan about some of this if you are that type but we went for a good holiday and a great experience and that is exactly what we had. Anyone with 3 teenagers can appreciate that if they were all happy and had a great time it must have been okay!

Have just arrived back from Tunisia...
8 / 10
Sep 2006, cclareelou

Have just arrived back from Tunisia after a 7 night stay at the Liberty Hotel.
My partner and I and my 7 year old daughter booked this all inclusive trip back in June, after reading the reviews on this site I was a little worried to say the least.
I have never been outside of the EU on holiday before and may I say what a difference Tunisia made. I would go back tomorrow given half the chance. The Liberty hotel has got it 85% right. The hotel itself is immaculate and the reception staff and porters couldn’t have been more helpful. We had a fantastic view of the pool from our room (which is air conditioned in the summer months). We found all the staff pleasant but the bar staff are not always happy. Bare in mind though they work ridiculously long shifts and cant even have a beer themselves. I think they did an excellent job considering.
The food ,well what can I say, my daughter and I can be a little fussy to say the least but we managed to eat all week. There is always a good salad selection and pasta of some sorts with potatoes or chips there, the only suspect thing I would say is the meat, not quite sure what some of it is but it was labeled later on in the week. It was good to see fruit available at every meal. I would like to see a children’s menu more available as some children did struggle (thankfully not mine).
The entertainment, I have never met such an enthusiastic bunch in all my life. They try really hard bless them. My daughter loved the mini club and mini disco in the evenings with Mr Ello. All the main entertainment was finished in the main area by around 10.30 so we weren’t disturbed at night at all.
A few tips for you, there are no drinks facility on the bedrooms, we took our own kettle and tea and coffee and it was a life saver in the mornings and night time. The beer can be a little on the gassy side and beware of the rush at the bar after dinner, there is usually only one barman working as fast as he can but expect a queue.
All in all we had a brilliant holiday and definitely go back. Please ignore the bad reports posted, go with an open mind and enjoy!

Well if you are planning to book a...
4 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr A Grantham

Well if you are planning to book a holiday at this hotel please read this first as an insight is better then a downsight once you get there. Me and my 3 friends booked this through Travel OX from Teletext about £370 all inclusive if you are looking for a guide price. No in-flight meals and no transfers. Better with no transfers as you should only pay about 5-10 dinar to get to the hotel but be warned it is a risk as there are about 20 men out there surrounding you to make a decision - intimidation at its finest.
This is a 3* Bronze rating hotel this means NO Spirits free at all free coke, sprite, fruit juice, beer, wine and cocktails (with bhuka local spirit) and bottled water which is the best part still or fizzy. Breakfast lunch dinner, snacks between 11-12pm in pizzeria, ice cream literally for the kids NO adults allowed. Cut off time is 2200hrs no leeway even if you are stood in the queue. You get a card which has to be used every time and no more than 4 drinks at a time but they will always give you a bottle of water if you ask for it. (per card) Rooms are adequate cleaned daily I would at least take a couple of towels with you as sometimes we went short.
Please bear in mind we are very adventurous, well travelled, well eaten and don’t like to complain.
Breakfast: basic but adequate not your fry up which I hope you wouldn’t expect anyway.
Lunch: Vile, Minging how ever you want to say it, sometimes chips which in the end we prayed for. Pasta in a tomato sauce (every single meal time), Mini beef burgers Chicken (most meats not to well cooked) in the end we just stopped going in wasn’t worth it.
Dinner: Again Vile Rabbit stew, sea food stew (incl squid, snails, octopus) in a gravy. Chicken (if it was chicken wrong colour for me) which wasn’t cooked please if you can’t cook pieces of chicken the size of a finger what’s the point. More pasta and rice and goulash types of meals. Totally catered for the continental visitor
All we ate was pasta, bread and potatoes no good if you are on atkins diet. And we splashed out on a pizza when we were hungry.
All meals the selection of fruit was nice and cakes and deserts were ok. You can get drinks in the dinning hall. The BBQ place by the pool is NOT free the Pizzeria other than the times stated is definitely not free ice creams are NOT free.
Liberty hotel is a very nice hotel the pool is gorgeous it is literally a 2 min walk to the beach through the sister hotel Neptunia (half board only). The beach is lovely other than, like everyone says the seaweed, this is bearable though and not to bad when you get further out, there is a bar down on the private beach were you can get drinks. The lucky lucky men - never take anything from them unless you want to buy. Lots of Water sports there but again expect to pay for everything.
Ali Baba Tours was ok just tell them to go away and make no commitments they work on commission and remind me of the people that ring you up and badger you to buy double glazing. But the private galleon was a good half a day out.
To be honest I could go on but here are a few outlines to deter you from going to this hotel unexpecting the reality of it. Like most people have said the staff in this hotel are its downfall. Horrible if you are not French or German don’t bother in the end we had to order our drinks in German just to get some attention they would ignore you as soon as they know you are English.
The animation team were ok they tried. The American bar is like the size of a hotel room, drinks much more expensive than outside the hotel but still cheaper than England. Monistair is best for gifts. Sousse has the bigger madina (be prepared BIG TIME). Don’t let the taxi drivers take the micky. And the Miami centre is ok for bits this cost us 7 dinars round trip but in comparison is a bit expensive and he waited but cheaper is down in monistair it is like a real supermarket. Well I hope this helps you make a decision. Cheers.

We found the staff all very friendly,...

Aug 2006, Mrs D J Ellard

We found the staff all very friendly, especially when we checked in at 4am! Rooms are spacious and reasonably clean, food was just about ok, eg croissants etc but very odd mixtures eg; cold rice for breakfast! and lunch and dinner were some strange concoctions.
The pool was very clean and a good size, as was the indoor pool. Flies can be a real pain in the lobby, and the ants on the grass area which are twice the size of ours back home! and bite!. Entertainment was pretty good along with its very friendly annimation team, and the bar staff are very cheery considering the hours they do.(beware the 9.45pm rush)
The Ali Baba sales guys in the hotel can pester you a fair bit but the camel trip and quad bikes are a good laugh. Should Mr Massage approach you try the algae scrub, mud wrap, sauna and massage, very good for preparing for your tan and helps stops burning in the 40-44degrees heat.
The beach is just over the road (with a welcoming breeze) through its sister hotel Neptunia, where we had a beach party on our last night, the bbq wasn't up to much though. We found we got on really well with all staff and made some good friends.
Location is a bit of a problem as you can’t go for a walk to a local shop bar or restaurant, But you can get a cab to Sousse or Monastir at a cost of 7dinar (make sure you agree cost first) the other drawback is there is no atm in the hotel. Hence the cab trip to find one. Try the pizzeria if you can’t stomach anymore hotel food, and also the crepes served in the afternoon at a cost of 2dinar or giant doughnuts.
Not somewhere we would consider going to again but nothing ventured nothing gained!

I just had to send in this review to...
3 / 10
Jul 2006, Mrs E Nayler

I just had to send in this review to hopefully open people’s eyes about this hotel, we went to the hotel as to families and a single friend, so in all there were 10 of us in total. 3 adults, 4 teenagers, and 3 kids.
the food was awful, if it wasn’t eaten at breakfast you got it at lunchtime if it wasn’t eaten at lunchtime you got it at dinner, if it wasn’t eaten at dinner you got it again at breakfast and that’s how it was all week, the food was sometimes unrecognisable, nothing 4 children to eat, the only thing that you could eat was bread rolls, the meat was pink inside so no-one ate it. In the end 5 of our party became ill with sickness and upset tummies..... Especially the head waiter that moved us every time we sat down to eat, the only people that had tables reserved 4 them were the Germans /Italians/ French. We were told by the head waiter it was because we were English, one of the children was manhandled by the head waiter as he refused to get up as he was eating, and we were outraged by this...with all this we complained to the rep.
This hotel is fine if you don’t want to eat all holiday
The beds were hard and pillows were lumpy but the rooms were very spacious big bathrooms with showers and all very clean...
one other point don’t change all your cash up at one time into dinar as if you want to change it back when you leave they will charge you 30% and you cannot take it back into England,..
The swimming pool was lovely, but the edge of the pool is very Sharpe and the children got lots of grazes from it. But beware lots of ants nests in the grass (and they bite) our kids also go glass in their feet from around the pool area.
If you go into Sousse or Monistir beware, the men are like limpets and they will not leave you alone,
They are very persistent and very annoying to say the least.
The pizzeria was very good but you had to pay in there.
The bar shuts at 10pm which is a nightmare as every1 scrambles for as many drinks as they can...
And your only allowed a certain amount unless you give them a back hander... take ur own drink in off the plane, and buy ur ciggies on the plane instead of at the duty free shop as its a lot cheaper...
Beach was ok but not fantastic lots of seaweed and looky looky men everywhere...
FLY'S FLY'S FLY'S FLY'S FLY'S FLY'S FLY'S they r nearly as annoying as the men...................
Well that’s it I hope this gives you some insight as to what you’re letting yourselves in for if you go to this hotel...
We did meet some lovely people and made some very good friends (all English) lol...

We just came back from our holiday at...

Jul 2006, Miss Tara Walker

We just came back from our holiday at the Liberty and it was real value for money. I went with my 9 year old daughter and 2 female friends with 2 children. The entertainment was excellent and the animation team made our holiday, always smiling, friendly and playful with the children. I found all the staff helpful, apart from the ones selling things, they do hassle you a bit, but it wasn't too bad, if you’re a woman on your own you will get a lot of male attention.
We recommend the camel trip and the pirate ship trip was good, tried the paragliding which was great fun but don't do it if you suffer back problems my friend did it and was in agony, food was pretty poor we expected it having read previous reviews, but there was plenty of croissants and fruit or pasta, however not a lot of choice for vegetarians.
We would go back for the entertainment really made our holiday, and the weather fantastic, pool was lovely, miss the aqua aerobics, and we already miss Kimo, Nino, Jo, Patrick, Zizo and Allo. Hope to see them all again sometime if I can get time off work to go back :-).

Jul 2006, Miss S Morgan

I am 12 years old and I went to the liberty hotel for a week and it wasn’t enough, in other words I wanted to stay longer.
The staff were very welcoming apart from the little shop inside the hotel , because they always wanted you to buy something. The food was nice, there was some different foods from different countries. The bedroom was very clean and the cleaners came in every day and made it spotlessly clean.
The outdoor pool area was clean but the entertainment crew was too much in your face.
I recommend every one to go for a Turkish bath because it was amazing. The beach was only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and it was clean and tidy and there were many water activities to go on.
I am going back to the hotel next year because I loved it.

Jun 2006, mick f

This was a last minute booking and to start with after reading some of the reviews about the liberty we were a little worried what we were going to get, but to be honest we had a great time here.
The rooms are a decent size and kept spotless by the maid you have a large swimming pool outside and a smaller one in doors which was great because when we were there it was 100+, plenty of seating around the bar area and lobby one problem the food don't get me wrong you would never starve it might just be I’m too picky apart from that a very nice place while you are here get out and about as much as you can taxis are cheap and an adventure in its self we were told all the taxis drivers had a driving test?
Go to the market at Monastir around the bazaar great fun and port el Kantaoui a nice little place with gift shops and some nice bars and restaurants average cost for a meal with a glass of beer about £7 go on the 2 day trip to the Sahara that was the highlight of the whole holiday.
You'll do about 800 miles in 2 days and it is spectacular and pay the extra for the dune bashing they take you into the desert in 4 wheel drive cars great stuff if you are an adrenaline junky and then up to were star wars was filmed all good stuff I have only gave this holiday 8/10 and that is because of the food but the Sahara trip gets 10/10.
