" better than expected "

just returned from a week here, lots better than i thoght it was going to be after reading other reviews. yes it could do with updating but food and drink was good and the room was clean. definatly pay extra for a sea view but be prepared to be kept awake every night until midnight by the entertainment which was very loud and often off key!!

Advice: area quite touristy, lots of english bars and places to eat fish and chips.

Activities: must go to fourtinas restaurant in Mdina and see the views of malta from the terrace.

Good for: Beach

" A Lovely Holiday "

My girlfriend and I are both 19, and stayed at the Qawra Palace Hotel last week.
After reading plenty of reviews on this website before our holiday, we were very nervous about our stay. I can safely say how wrong a lot of the reviews are on here. The hotel is very clean, the rooms overlooking the Courtroom are not exciting but at the same time you wouldn't expect that. Our room was fully air conditioned, had a safety deposit box which was very cheap for the whole stay, a fridge which we used for our own drinks and sandwiches and very spacious indeed. Sheets were changed every day and maid service was very good.
The outdoor pool is seawater, but very good for the skin. Indoor pool lovely and warm. Lovely views from Pool side.
The food was fantastic. This hotel cuts no corners just because it is buffet style. Huge choice of salads, a different soup every night, four choices for main meal, and different potatoes, pasta and vegetables to choose from. Breakfast choice was good again with Bacon, Sausages, boiled, scrambled, fried eggs, tomatoes, baked beans, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cold meat and cheese. All sorts of bread to choose from as well. Can't really complain! The pool bar served sandwiches, burgers, chips, hot dogs and ice creams as part of all inclusive between 11:00 - 23:00.
The drinks on all inclusive were very comprehensive. Stella for beer, with all soft drinks, and most spirits included. You would struggle to find a drink that wasn't included.
The system of handing your card over to receive a receipt, and then have to hand the receipt back over to be served was ridiculous and would be one thing I would suggest changing.
The resort is lovely - Malta is so small that you can get on and off the buses for about 1.16 euro. Lots of places to see and well worth exploring. Valletta, Silema, Mosta, Gozo, Blue Lagoon are all worth a visit.
Ignore the reviews that are below 5 stars - they were probably disappointed that McDonalds was more than a 5 minute walk.
It's not a palace but it's a very nice hotel. We may return in the future.

Advice: Beautiful scenes

Activities: Malta by night was amazing, Thomas Cook Bar Crawl was very fun!

" Not a Palace but.... "

Not a palace but it did prove good value for money. The staff were friendly & accommodating. They met our request for a high floor & it was well worth paying the extra for a sea view because the view was wonderful. More than I can say for the court yard view!
There were Italian students at the hotel during our stay, and they were occasionally boisterous, but their behaviour was tame compared to an English family who appeared unable to control their children or themselves. At one point the adults even resorted to a stand up fist fight at the pool side! Fortunately this was an isolated incident.
Although our room was clean it was in need of modernising & redecorating. The bathroom was the smallest I’ve ever seen in a hotel, and the air conditioning in our room just about managed to cope.
One thing we did find particularly annoying was having to pay one euro a day for a sun bed mattress.
But overall we spent an enjoyable week’s holiday at the Qawra Palace. The all inclusive package was good value for money. A family friendly hotel.

Advice: Rocky but with good access to the sea

" nothing to moan about "

to be honest, this isnt a 4star hotel but its not far away from it.my wife and i returned yesterday with no complaints about the staff, the food, the hotel or the resort.we found people were moaning about the food but you seen the same people going in the restaraunt every day and sometimes having 2 or 3 helpings.i suggest if you go to this hotel in the right frame of mind you will enjoy yourself if you want to be waited on hand and foot, then go elsewhere.this is a popular hotel in the summer and very busy with english italians ,french & spanish, but caters for all.If you want a bed by the pool then you must be up early as you get the same idiots every day putting towels out at 6am.all in all we have stayed in better hotels but we have stayed in a lot lot worse.

Advice: malta was lovley and hot

" Dissappointing "

This is the sixth time we have been to Malta, and the fifth time staying at the Qawra Palace...most likely the last.About eleven years ago was the first time we stayed there and it looks as if nothing at all has been updated. The beds were a total disgrace..hard, ancient, stained mattresses, noisy air conditioning, leaking toilet,to name the most obvious.
The restaurant is clean and spacious, though the choice each night was extremely dissappointing.Entertainment was very poor, couldnt subject my little girl to Martin Elvis or Joe Carr(or is he pronounced Joker). The real sore point for us was the weekly influx of mainly Italian language students. They shouted across balconies on a nightly basis, blocked stairways and would not move when asked, caused a nuisance at the pool which forced us to alter our times there, and were a total nightmare altogether with absolutely no respect for other hotel guests. The hotel did little or nothing. We would not be recommending this hotel to anyone and will be staying elsewhere in future.

Advice: Really nice resort, handy for buses and has a good choice of restaurants.

Activities: A trip to Gozo is a must when in Malta.

" Wouldn't wish this Hotel on my worst enemy... "

If someone offered me a free holiday in this "hole" I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy. We returned last week (August 20009) from the worst holiday we have ever had.
The hotel smells of bad drains and sulphur...everywhere.
The bed was broken, the air conditioning system leaked all through the ceiling, down the wardrobe and onto my clothes. The TV sprked because of the water on it. The remote control to operate the contraption had to be hired, has did the kettle and safe key.
The shower had no nozzle on it, the bathroom door handle came off in our hand, the patio doors did not shut correctly, the drawers had bottoms cracked or missing and teh noise level from the air con at night was ridiculous.
We picked the top floor so that we would not be disturbed by the entertainment (if you can call the birdy song, achey breaky heart and simply the best on repeat all week) entertainment, but as they host this extravaganza in the pool area outside yoour hotel the noise stays with you till gone midnight.
The tables are set in groups of 4 so if there are 5 or 6 in your party you cannot sit together.
The worst thing of all was the food. It was so bad, that we had to eat out every day and night which used up most of our spending money.
The All Inclusive is limited and they only treat you nicely if you are a paying customer. If you have already paid your all inclusive and they have your money they do not want to know. The staff are bad mannered and ignorant and too many things were closed. The Nightclub, ballroom, sauna and indoor pool never opened. The ;pool table had balls missing and the whole hotel is run badly.
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Malta is like Beirut with an ice cream van - Never Again.

Advice: If you want a good family holiday in the Med, miss Malta off your list.

Activities: The Water Park was good for the kids and was the best part of the holiday.Quite reasonably priced to

" Disappointing! "

Have just returned from a week's stay at Qawra Palace and all I can say is that it was not at all what we were expecting! It was definitely not a 4* hotel and should either be 2* or a youth hostel for all the Italian students who were a nightmare, very rude, noisy, disruptive and had no respect for the other guests. We had to hang around for about 45 minutes before we were checked in and the staff were stressed because it was so busy. We requested 2 seaview rooms for myself and husband and my two daughters (aged 16 and 13) but when we got there were offered courtyard rooms. We were told if we wanted to upgrade it would cost us another 205 euros which we paid and were given two rooms on the 3rd floor. The view was lovely but it was very noisy from the busy main road and the shocking nightime entertainment, which was very dated and consisted of mainly Elvis nights or Sixties music. My daughters were not impressed and nor were we for that matter!! The food was bland and there was not much choice especially vegetables and the cutlery and crockery were usually dirty so you had to search to find clean ones (they need a new dishwasher!). Some of the staff were pleasant but some were rude and acted like you were a nuisance rather than a paying guest. The pool was salt water which we were aware of before we came, but it was rather small for the amount of guests and there weren't enough sunbeds. You were told not to reserve beds but people were putting their towels on them from 8am onwards! The rooms were a good size but the air conditioning was poor and the bathrooms were too small. However, we had clean towels every day and the maids were efficient.
On a plus side, the weather was fantastic, the hotel location was good with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars in the area and it was right by the sea. Although there was no beach, the sea was clear and lovely to swim in. There was also a good range of water sports to try.
We will not be going back to Malta anytime soon and definitely not to the Qawra Palace!

" The Worst Ever "

We have just returned from 2 weeks holiday in Malta staying at the Qawra Palace Hotel, and my advise to anyone thinking of booking to stay there is 'DO NOT'. We did not have the correct room on arrival and had to stay the first night in a dingy small room overlooking the 'courtyard' which is awful just like a prison or ghetto setup, where all the rooms overlook each other and balconies meet. Italian students stay at the hotel and accounted for over half of the people staying there, it should be called a 'hostel' not hotel! The Italian students spent all night shouting across to each other, so we didn't get any sleep the first night. We got a room change to 7th floor overlooking pool/sea, which we had to pay a supplement of £205 Euros for. The beds were awful in our room, matresses stained and torn - more like what a tramp would sleep or dumped in a skip, not a paying guest in a supposedly 4* hotel. The restaurant was very noisy, Italian students ruled, pushing & shoving in front - mealtimes were like a rugby scrum!! Staff were not friendly either. The hotel is badly in need of re-decorating and refurbishing. This hotel is definately not a 4* - it should be down-graded to a 1 or 2* hotel - or changed to a 'hostel' for the students. Worst holiday accommodation we have ever had!!!

Advice: Lovely place with lots of watersports and activities to keep everyone occupied

" Would go back! "

After reading lots of bad reviews of this hotel I was a little worried!Once there I could not believe people moaned about it what do they expect ? Malta is a little behind the times compared to Spain. We were all includsive and were allowed many major brand drinks included. The snack bar by the pool was very good and had available chips/burgers and a selection of sandwiches which was more than adequate.
I am a very fussy vegetarian and could not fault the food- there was always a couple of vegetarian options every night as well as a selection of salads and fresh fuit salad. There was also a kids choice that you had to order with the waiter upon entry of the dining room.
The staff were lovely, when we had a problem with booking for the Pizzeria owned by the hotel we spoke to the Manager who was very helpful and resolved the matter.
Ok there were alot of Italian students there who were no bother but the whole of Malta was full of them- afterall if is the summer holidays.
I do agree with others that the hotels rooms and bathrooms need renovation. I'm already looking at booking for next year.

" Not so 4 Star..... "

My husband and I were told before we left for Malta that we would either love it or hate it! I shrugged this off because I was so looking forward to staying at The Qawra Palace, which I was convinced was a 4 Star hotel with a beautiful pool area, close to Buggiba (if we wanted it) but quiet enough if we didn't. What I got was, to put things mildly was a great disappointment. We had booked through Malta Direct after Cosmos Holidays had let us down badly. We booked for 11 days on a B & B basis. Upon arriving in Malta it was sunny and hot, great I thought. When we got picked up at the airport (which was a surprise because our schedule said we had to find our own way to the hotel) great I thought. When we got to The Qawra Palace, I was surprised that it was on a busy main road. The brochure and web site certainly do not give this impression. The reception was very busy. The staff were just about coping. After waiting for at least 20 minutes (it seemed that other guests that had arrived before us were not at all happy with their allocated rooms and were in the process of changing them!!) we checked in. I had e-mailed the hotel only days before requesting a seaview room but upon checking in it was apparent that we had been given a courtyard room. We were told immediately by the receptionist that if we wanted to upgrade to a seaview room the price would be a further €140 euros and that we could also upgrade to All Inclusive. I was curious as to why we should be told that even before we had seen our room. When we did see it, and the so called 'view', I could see why people were not happy with their courtyard rooms and were upgrading almost immediately. They were dark, incredibly small with almost no balcony. The 'view' was straight into everybody else's rooms (unless you had your curtains drawn all the time!!) Needless to say we paid the extra €140 and we were given a seaview room on the second floor. The view was very nice, but the road noise was unbelieveable. I thought the drivers in Spain were bad, but these take the biscuit. The hotel needs a major overhaul and refurbishment. The decor was poor, floor tiles were cracked and dirty, bathroom overhead lights were disgustingly dirty, toilet seats and lids did not fit properly, showers curtains were too small and did not fit the baths and so consequently water was all over the floor in the bathroom, and the beds are extremely uncomfortable. On the other hand towels were changed regularly and the chambermaids were efficient and polite. The best thing about The Qawra Palace is the Cafe Royale. Their coffees are just brilliant, but don't order speciality coffees, because you don't get the alcohol! After experiencing Spain and all its islands, I would say that our stay in Malta was an experience, but one I won't be repeating. The timeshare touts are a nuisance and even though they see you every day and you still say not thank you, they still pester you all the time, even on your last day when all you want to do is while away the hours before you are picked up to go home. No Malta is not for us, and neither is The Qawra Palace.

" SHOCKING!!!! "

If late nights and no sleep is what your holiday is about then this is the hotel for you. Midnight swiming in the pool is also allowed so if you fancy a dip in the middle of the night the option is there! Most of the other children that are staying in the hotel are left to their own devices so shouting and screaming is consent but after the second week you get used to it! NOT! Health and Safety in the hotel is 5*? Secruity guards sleeping on the job whilst kids run and throw others in the pool in the pitch black.
We did phone to complain once but this seemed to be a waste of time, he asked, which pool the chidren were in, we thort this was strange as there is only one pool at the hotel!
We personally watched the secruity gurad leisurly stroll up and try and round the children up and fish out of the pool. Think this night we manged to get a couple of hours sleep!!!!!
Room: 0/10
Food: 0/10
Staff: 0/10
If you did want to complain then dont do it at weekends as the managers do not work and then if they are at the hotel they are far to buzy to see you!

" Back to the sixties "

My wife and i have just returned from a great week in Malta,The Qwara Palace is a nice hotel on the whole, mind you the views into the courtyard from our balcony were depressing, The entertainment at the poolside bar struggled to get out of the 1960s and the weekend was interupted by a bunch of freakisk local women who came for the three hours line dancing whilst nursing 1 beer between them. If yoy like waltzing and line dancing this is the place, Anything musice past 1970 seemed to be off the menu.
The food was good but getting your head around the seating system is a bit of a trial, the bar staff were brill, Very friendly and efficient.
The nightclub was only open for one night during our stay and we missed out on booking for it!!!!! So yet another night of poor entertainment and the ipods plugged in again!
Malta is a great place to visit,Mdina & Valetta are great places to visit. I would go back to Malta but not at the Qwara Palace purly for the lack of entertainment. Get a DJ box and dump the below average pub singers reading their lyrics from laptops.

Advice: Try dodging the timeshare touts with out coping a tirade of bad language

Activities: Mdina is a must see if your thing is history.

" Qawra Palace, Malta, 2009 "

We (2 adults, 2 kids (11 & 4)) have just returned from a 2 week stay at The Qawra Palace & we certainly would have no problem in going back. It's rated as a 4 star, although it's perhaps a 3 star (albeit a good 3 star).
Rooms were cleaned every day, towels changed daily. Family room was spacious enough, nothing special but certainly liveable for the duration of the holiday. Only quarms about the room was that the air conditioning wasn't good....which was no help with the very warm night time temperatures & the view over the courtyard (although we had expected this after reading other reviews of the hotel). Ideally you would want a room with the sea view, which is fantastic......however an early night would be out of the question with the entertainment (from this & a nearby hotel).
Food was good, fairly decent variety. If you are going with children then there is no separate children's menu. You will need to check the menu (which is posted up just before lunch) to see what the children's meal is to be for that day.......it will be chips & something! You then need to order the children's meal from one of the waiters. The Childrens meals are good though, not fatty or greasy, the size of the portions are very good too!
The staff are all very pleasant, in particular the waiters.....Kevin especially! He laughed & joked with all the guests & was brilliant with the kids. Bar service was a little hit & miss. Pool was clean, entertainment wasn't too bad.
Location was very good, Bugibba square & Bugibba bus terminal are only a short walk from the hotel. Buses are very frequent & appeared to be on time. The fares are very reasonable as well......the old buses are the best......better than any ride at alton towers!
Weather, as expected, was fantastic. If you've not been to Malta before then there are very few beaches however the one at Mellihea Bay is great, the water was crystal clear & very shallow which the kids loved.
Only disappointment about the holiday was that now Malta uses the Euro :-( some things are a little expensive, we last went in 2006 when it was the Maltese Lira & we noticed the difference.
Other than that it was a great holiday.

" Oh Dear! "

An excellent hotel, structurally and for it's facilities. Bit out of the way, if you are not too mobile - but there are always the antique buses!!
The staff are excellent - but the food is pathetic! Two breakfasts - repeated on alternate days. Very poor and limited choice for dinner - and of poor canteen standard.
BUT - the hotel caters for repeated incursions of Italian teen-agers, allegedly in Malta for four days to learn English. They monopolise the lifts, the games area, the indoor pool and jacuzzi. They charge about making noise well into the small hours. During our stay there was a junior International Weight-lifting contest - so more testosterone fuelled young men!
The "piece-de-resistance". On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights the hotel caters for UP TO 600, local matrons - all in their poshest black robes, for Bingo, Dancing an Line Dancing. Residents - Forget It! You can't sit in the foyer for an hour and a half - you can't access a lift - and the noise!!!

Advice: Don

Activities: The sight of the flight home!!
