Not so 4 Star.....

My husband and I were told before we left for Malta that we would either love it or hate it! I shrugged this off because I was so looking forward to staying at The Qawra Palace, which I was convinced was a 4 Star hotel with a beautiful pool area, close to Buggiba (if we wanted it) but quiet enough if we didn't. What I got was, to put things mildly was a great disappointment. We had booked through Malta Direct after Cosmos Holidays had let us down badly. We booked for 11 days on a B & B basis. Upon arriving in Malta it was sunny and hot, great I thought. When we got picked up at the airport (which was a surprise because our schedule said we had to find our own way to the hotel) great I thought. When we got to The Qawra Palace, I was surprised that it was on a busy main road. The brochure and web site certainly do not give this impression. The reception was very busy. The staff were just about coping. After waiting for at least 20 minutes (it seemed that other guests that had arrived before us were not at all happy with their allocated rooms and were in the process of changing them!!) we checked in. I had e-mailed the hotel only days before requesting a seaview room but upon checking in it was apparent that we had been given a courtyard room. We were told immediately by the receptionist that if we wanted to upgrade to a seaview room the price would be a further €140 euros and that we could also upgrade to All Inclusive. I was curious as to why we should be told that even before we had seen our room. When we did see it, and the so called 'view', I could see why people were not happy with their courtyard rooms and were upgrading almost immediately. They were dark, incredibly small with almost no balcony. The 'view' was straight into everybody else's rooms (unless you had your curtains drawn all the time!!) Needless to say we paid the extra €140 and we were given a seaview room on the second floor. The view was very nice, but the road noise was unbelieveable. I thought the drivers in Spain were bad, but these take the biscuit. The hotel needs a major overhaul and refurbishment. The decor was poor, floor tiles were cracked and dirty, bathroom overhead lights were disgustingly dirty, toilet seats and lids did not fit properly, showers curtains were too small and did not fit the baths and so consequently water was all over the floor in the bathroom, and the beds are extremely uncomfortable. On the other hand towels were changed regularly and the chambermaids were efficient and polite. The best thing about The Qawra Palace is the Cafe Royale. Their coffees are just brilliant, but don't order speciality coffees, because you don't get the alcohol! After experiencing Spain and all its islands, I would say that our stay in Malta was an experience, but one I won't be repeating. The timeshare touts are a nuisance and even though they see you every day and you still say not thank you, they still pester you all the time, even on your last day when all you want to do is while away the hours before you are picked up to go home. No Malta is not for us, and neither is The Qawra Palace.

If late nights and no sleep is what your holiday is about then this is the hotel for you. Midnight swiming in the pool is also allowed so if you fancy a dip in the middle of the night the option is there! Most of the other children that are staying in the hotel are left to their own devices so shouting and screaming is consent but after the second week you get used to it! NOT! Health and Safety in the hotel is 5*? Secruity guards sleeping on the job whilst kids run and throw others in the pool in the pitch black.
We did phone to complain once but this seemed to be a waste of time, he asked, which pool the chidren were in, we thort this was strange as there is only one pool at the hotel!
We personally watched the secruity gurad leisurly stroll up and try and round the children up and fish out of the pool. Think this night we manged to get a couple of hours sleep!!!!!
Room: 0/10
Food: 0/10
Staff: 0/10
If you did want to complain then dont do it at weekends as the managers do not work and then if they are at the hotel they are far to buzy to see you!

My wife and i have just returned from a great week in Malta,The Qwara Palace is a nice hotel on the whole, mind you the views into the courtyard from our balcony were depressing, The entertainment at the poolside bar struggled to get out of the 1960s and the weekend was interupted by a bunch of freakisk local women who came for the three hours line dancing whilst nursing 1 beer between them. If yoy like waltzing and line dancing this is the place, Anything musice past 1970 seemed to be off the menu.
The food was good but getting your head around the seating system is a bit of a trial, the bar staff were brill, Very friendly and efficient.
The nightclub was only open for one night during our stay and we missed out on booking for it!!!!! So yet another night of poor entertainment and the ipods plugged in again!
Malta is a great place to visit,Mdina & Valetta are great places to visit. I would go back to Malta but not at the Qwara Palace purly for the lack of entertainment. Get a DJ box and dump the below average pub singers reading their lyrics from laptops.

Qawra Palace, Malta, 2009

We (2 adults, 2 kids (11 & 4)) have just returned from a 2 week stay at The Qawra Palace & we certainly would have no problem in going back. It's rated as a 4 star, although it's perhaps a 3 star (albeit a good 3 star).
Rooms were cleaned every day, towels changed daily. Family room was spacious enough, nothing special but certainly liveable for the duration of the holiday. Only quarms about the room was that the air conditioning wasn't good....which was no help with the very warm night time temperatures & the view over the courtyard (although we had expected this after reading other reviews of the hotel). Ideally you would want a room with the sea view, which is fantastic......however an early night would be out of the question with the entertainment (from this & a nearby hotel).
Food was good, fairly decent variety. If you are going with children then there is no separate children's menu. You will need to check the menu (which is posted up just before lunch) to see what the children's meal is to be for that day.......it will be chips & something! You then need to order the children's meal from one of the waiters. The Childrens meals are good though, not fatty or greasy, the size of the portions are very good too!
The staff are all very pleasant, in particular the waiters.....Kevin especially! He laughed & joked with all the guests & was brilliant with the kids. Bar service was a little hit & miss. Pool was clean, entertainment wasn't too bad.
Location was very good, Bugibba square & Bugibba bus terminal are only a short walk from the hotel. Buses are very frequent & appeared to be on time. The fares are very reasonable as well......the old buses are the best......better than any ride at alton towers!
Weather, as expected, was fantastic. If you've not been to Malta before then there are very few beaches however the one at Mellihea Bay is great, the water was crystal clear & very shallow which the kids loved.
Only disappointment about the holiday was that now Malta uses the Euro :-( some things are a little expensive, we last went in 2006 when it was the Maltese Lira & we noticed the difference.
Other than that it was a great holiday.

An excellent hotel, structurally and for it's facilities. Bit out of the way, if you are not too mobile - but there are always the antique buses!!
The staff are excellent - but the food is pathetic! Two breakfasts - repeated on alternate days. Very poor and limited choice for dinner - and of poor canteen standard.
BUT - the hotel caters for repeated incursions of Italian teen-agers, allegedly in Malta for four days to learn English. They monopolise the lifts, the games area, the indoor pool and jacuzzi. They charge about making noise well into the small hours. During our stay there was a junior International Weight-lifting contest - so more testosterone fuelled young men!
The "piece-de-resistance". On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights the hotel caters for UP TO 600, local matrons - all in their poshest black robes, for Bingo, Dancing an Line Dancing. Residents - Forget It! You can't sit in the foyer for an hour and a half - you can't access a lift - and the noise!!!

Went all inclusive to this hotel last...

Went all inclusive to this hotel last year and it was fantastic. My wife and 10 year old daughter loved it and my parents, who have been all over the world, could not fault it either.
Food was top notch, the staff were friendly and helpful, the site was clean and the rooms were ok. Loved the sal****er pool too....just what was needed after a lie in the hot sun
If i did have any picky complaints, it would be that the matresses were not the most comfortable in the world and the air con in the room wasn't too good.
There wasn't many kids in the hotel which my daughter found a little sad but in truth, if you want a family holiday with loads of screaming kids, fun fairs and amusements, don't go to Malta.

The Qawra Palace Hotel is excellent but the rooms are a bit small. The lobby is very big and very cool.Opposite the reception desk there is a games room wth two pool tables, car racing and two different pinball machines. There is loads of shops and restraunts just outside. The Qawra Palace Hotel is right opposite the beach. The Pizzaria is digusting.Nearby there is a sweet little bar called The Cin Cin lounge bar.The Qawra Palace Hotel is great for families.I would recommend this lovely hotel.

We went with trepidation after reading reviews last year but were almost completely satisfied with the holiday. Our room was fine-3 beds and still plenty space to spare. Bathroom very small but ok. The towels were changed daily but we were disappointed with the bedding changes-only changed twice during 2 weeks stay although the weather was hot & sticky.
The dining room was fine, food excellent, staff very friendly & helpful. My only personal problem with the dining area was that guests were allowed to enter dressed like tramps - the hotel is after all classed nominally as a 4*.
Overall a very satisfactory holiday. My only real complaint was that the British children at the hotel behaved like a pack of destructive, ill mannered yobs with no parental control. My wife reprimanded one boy for damaging a pool cue on purpose and was told to f*** off.
I do feel that the hotel staff should clamp down on this behaviour as obviously the parents just dump the kids aand say ' see you in a fortnight'

I have just come back from a week's half board at Qawra Palace Hotel. I went with my husband. I was very concerned before I went because of the bad comments on this site! I was originally All Inclusive but changed to half board with a Seaview room. We were so glad we had the Seaview room the view was just stunning especially the sunrise and sunset. People commented on the noise on the seaview rooms but I didn't find it too bad, the daytime was fine and the traffic a little noisy at night but nothing major. All the entertainment was finished by 12o/clock so you weren't kept awake all night. We liked sitting on our balcony with a glass of wine watching everything that was going on!
The hotel I found to be very clean. The staff I found very helpful especially the reception staff. I originally had my seaview room on the seventh floor but I don't like heights so I asked to be moved which they did the next day to the third floor which was lovely! My cosmos rep was a bit rubbish only saw her once on the hurried welcome meeting when she was trying to sell me trips out!The cosmos trips were all expensive whole day trips whilst other tour operators were offering half day nicer ones.
The room was fine, it was clean, bathroom a little small, the bedroom was fine with plenty of cupboard space etc. I must admit the room I originally had on the seventh floor was a lot bigger and the bathroom was too, so if you don't mind heights request a room higher up!
The food I must admit I wasn't that keen on, I didn't think there was enough variety and the potato was the same every night. I did eat out a couple of nights. Breakfast was fine plenty to choose from and have.
The entertainment was ok nothing fantastic but good enough to have a few drinks and listen to. Singers every night though no variety! Renatto and Carlos were brilliant though the best entertainment all week, I would definately have seen them again if I could!
The swimming pool was good, you have to get a lounger early in the morning to stand a chance of getting one in the shade and you really need one as the sun is extremely hot. It was lovely swimming in the pool and cooling down!
The location was very pretty. You have to walk up a very steep hill to get into town and the bus station. It was extremely hard going as when we went it was very very hot and it was exhausting just to walk a little way. I found Buggiba dissappointing, there was a lot of rubbish in carrier bags on the streets! Also there was alot of rubble where walls etc had been knocked down. Everything looked awful not attractive at all.
The coffee shop was very very good we had lunch there most days and the prices were very cheap just 1 euro for a sandwich and 2 euros for a massive slice of banoffee pie, lemon meringue pie and lots of other gateaux.
Overall I found the holiday very relaxing and enjoyable. The hotel was absolutely fine, I'd say probably not 4 star but a good 3 star! I wouldn't go back there not because of the hotel but because of the run down resort, I found it a bit of a dump to be honest!
The Maltese people i found to be very nice and friendly.
Anyone worried about this hotel don't be. I must say don't get a courtyard room though they did look awful!

just returned from a two weeks stay at the qwara palace. i must say that its one of the nicest places we have stayed in, the hotel was very clean, towels were changed everyday and sheets every other day. all the staff were really nice. the food was fantastic with a really good choice, kids meals were also available if there was nothing on the buffet they fancied my 10yr old only ordered a kids meal twice the whole fortnight that we were there. there was a tv and hairdryer in our room. the pool was fab with loads of sun loungers but we spent most of our time in the sea.there was nightly entertainment which was good, and this went on till midnight every night. the hotel is close to shops and bars and resturants and is about a ten minute walk to buggiba square the bus terminal to valletta is about 5 mins away although the bus takes about 45 mins. we returned home on the tuesday and by wedesday afternoon we'd booked to go back next year. would recomend this hotel to anyone. cant wait till next year x

My family and I came back from the qawra palace on the 29th of July and I can honestly say we had a brilliant time. The food was good, the restuarant was quite hectic at times but everything ran smoothly to say the amount of guests there. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The afternoon kids club was fantastic for my seven year old daughter, and the girls running it were great and all the kids got to know each other really well. We had a court yard room which was really big, small balcony but if you have a little one like us you wont really use it. The hotel is clean and tidy, not the most modern hotel but all the hotels in Malta seem to be alike. Fantastic location and five minute walk to Buggiba. The all-inclusive bar was brill stella on draught and proper bottles of tonic and soda!!!!

First trip to Malta. Hotel clean and tidy. Rooms cleaned on a daily basis. Staff friendly. Pool area did get busy but it is the height of the season - always managed to get a sun bed. Would recommend sea view room - lovely view. Would say a good 3* hotel - breakfast good. Overall enjoyed our holiday - no complaints about hotel. Airport Taxi service provided was first class. Entertainment a bit the same at the hotel, but Bugibba provides good food and entertainment
