Jun 2008, minky

On 1st impressions it seemed like a nice but very very overpriced bog standard 3* hotel. The staff seemed polite but from the start things were wrong. I booked over the phone and when i arrived they had let out the room i booked- the only available for wheelchair users. The... more

Terrible service, okay hotel
To begin, if you're an internet hotel shopper, the main Eastgate Hotel site only allows you to make bookings through a centralized service. While this usually is fine, in this instance it was the disconnect between the hotel and booking service that ruined our stay. The hotel had our reservation dates wrong and when we arrived (on what they thought was a day late), we were only just given rooms, as though they were automatically blaming us. When I proved through my email confirmation that it was their mistake, the staff did not apologize, but rather inconvenienced us by making us move rooms in the middle of our only day to tour the city of Oxford. The worst bit is that we incurred a random (sizable!) charge on our credit card and it took more than two months (including multiple phone calls and more than five personal visits) to have the charge reversed. Despite the fact that the rooms are nice and the breakfast was posh, the service was the worst I have experienced in my life.
What a cracker!
We have stayed at McDonald Eastgate several times over the last year, and every stay has been delightful. The rooms are spacious, well appointed, always fresh and clean and with sparkling bathrooms! The staff are friendly and most helpful without being intrusive. Any request is dealt with promptly and with good humour. The position couldn't be better - facing the Examination Hall but in a quiet side road off the High St. Right in the very centre of Oxford close to shops, colleges, coffee houses, wine bars and restaurants. Only a minute away from the airport bus stop. A brilliant experience every time!
Good hotel in great location
My stay at this hotel was very enjoyable. The hotel is in a great location, in the centre of Oxford and near all the attractions. The hotel itself was very clean and well looked after. I asked for a room at the back of the hotel (it is on the corner of a busy road) which was very quiet and the beds were very comfortable. The room had everything that you would need for your stay. I also found the staff very helpful and friendly. I would definitely stay here again!
Well Situated
This hotel is well placed in Oxford.Everything is within walking distance. I found the staff to be very helpful and courteous. My room was on the third floor and very quiet. Although the parking is extra at £12.50,you can leave your car after checking out and finish visiting Oxford. I did not have breakfast at the hotel. However, there are plenty of places nearby that offer good coffee and healthy eating. I would recommend a visit.
Awful
Easily the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. The noise from the street below was unbearable, and the staff incredibly unhelpful. If you want a decent night's sleep do NOT stay here.
Stay here
Given how limited the competition is in central Oxford I was surprised how nice this place was and how helpful the staff. Lots of stairs and dodgy lift so not suitable for anyone who has limited mobility. Newly refurbished rooms with thoughtful touches. Reasonably priced for the area
updated rooms nice
The updated rooms at the Eastgate are nice and roomy, with a comfortable bed. Only problems were the front desk (didn't answer telephone, computers down - couldn't get invoice at checkout, didn't receive invoice by fax, emails sent to the hotel keep getting kicked back, forgot wakeup call, taxi scheduled never arrived....). If you can get past dealing with the front desk, it's nice.
