Macdonald Randolph Hotel

I had been to the Randolph with my aunt and uncle in the past and it was very nice except that in 1999, we were enjoying our lunch and the fire alarm went off and although they allowed us to stay in the lounge because my aunt and uncle were in their 90s and it was freezing outside, it spoilt our lunch. This year, I went with my son for afternoon tea and I ordered a cream tea and he ordered a steak baguette. The hotel itself is very beautiful and wonderfully situated in the heart of the city. Be warned however if you’re under the age of about 22 you will be given some very odd looks by the majority of the fellow hotel users!! The staff were very friendly and I did not get this impression form any of them, but myself and my boyfriend are both 19 years old and received some very rude looks from other customers. Despite what you see on the very grand and flashy website I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. Food is poor, service terrible, staff generally unhelpful although fairly polite. Parking charges are eyewatering. The worst thing was reception failing to make my alarm call, meaning I was late for my meeting in the morning. booked 2 rooms through the hotels own website (much cheaper..got a really good deal!) and could not fault a thing. Cynics may say that the deal we got on the rooms coloured our view somewhat...but even a good price wouldnt compensate for bad service...but the Macdonald Randolph doesnt do bad service. Just stayed at this hotel. It was a great location, but my room was on the front right outside the bus stops, cinema, & when the pubs & night clubs closed well the language was something( drink added to that) & it was very noisy thankgoodness for the air con. As one couldn't open the window as it should be tripled glazed. The room was fine as for the bed it was so soft it dipped in the middle & I am not a large person quite small. We could not fault the Randolph! From the fantastic level of service whilst booking the hotel, arranging food, flowers, champagne and spa treatmens, to the excellent reception in all areas. The spa treatments were excellent. Overall hotel quality and room standards were exceptional. Staff were very pleasant, attentive and professional. My partner and I tried to negotiate a lower room rate, what a mistake! From that moment on each time we walked past the Randolph reception team we were glared at and were made to feel very uncomfortable. Also, we are very disappointed by the consistent changes made to the Randolph's room charges - the cost per room varies from day to day. Typically, the Randolph Macdonalds Reservations Department will try to gain the maximum cost for any room but as a customer We are aware of this and feel an injustice. We booked an executive double in this hotel through LateRooms for £160, including breakfast, which I thought was quite reasonable given that it was a Saturday night in the middle of the graduation ceremonies. Took my wife to Oxford for a 'special' birthday in 2004. Decided to be conned by the marketing hype and splash out on a weekend at the Randolph. It is an impressive building with impressive public spaces but not worth the money. The room was small but elegantly fitted, although the furnishings had a number of old stains on them and it had not been cleaned properly - used matchsticks and sweet wrappers on the floor. I have just returned from the Randolph Hotel. I had organised my company's Annual Meeting here before i looked at the reviews on TripAdvisor and was more than a little worried having read some of the negative comments. I needn't have been concerned. The hotel was wonderful. The Food (especially given the fact that they were catering for nearly 200 people) was fantastic. The bedroom was out of this world. The people could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Would i go back?? You just try and stop me!!
