Earls Regency Hotel

We stayed for three nights at the end of April. First impressions were excellent. The staff were extremely courteous and efficient as you would expect from a top class hotel. Unfortunately the hotel was let down by a number of points minor in themselves, but collectively extremely irritating: 1) The hotel's sole cappuchino machine had been broken for over a week and was not expected to be replaced for another 2 weeks ! 2) The bathroom drain smelled. 3) There was only one very limited menu covering all restaurant / coffee... more

Where shall I begin? We went as honeymooners and were given a room with 2 beds which they "kindly" offered to join to make a double. Great start! There was no balcony off our room despite them advertising all rooms with balconies. The bathroom stunk due to lack of ventilation. The towels were grey and fraying. The front desk staff were a pain - they did not understand "Do not disturb" signs on doors and so followed them through with phone calls asking us if we wanted our room cleaned, do we mind putting our tea tray... more

We stayed at the Earl's Regency for one night over the busy Sri Lankan new year period. Our experince may just have been bad luck but the hotel did not live up to the standards of other hotels in the Aitken Spence chain we stayed in. We stayed here for two nights on a ten day tour of Sri Lanka, and after having read some of the previous reviews on this site, I was a little apprehensive and did not know what to expect. I need not have worried, the Earls Regency was delightful. We stayed at the hotel in early Jan 2006. It’s a beautiful hotel built on a hillock overlooking a river but we felt that it could have done with better maintenance. Our room was quite spacious and was overlooking the pool. The staff personified ‘service with a smile’. The food in the hotel was good with prompt room service. My husband and I celebrated my birthday during our stay and the chef made it very special for us by organizing a nice dinner for us. What a great place - we only stayed 3 nights in the middle of the ineviatable tour, but this was one of the best hotels of the tour. The location is out of the way, but simply stunning - perched over the river. Our room was lovely - we were in the old wing, the same building as the reception and our room was huge. Wooden floors, separate sofa, huge bathroom, dressing area with wardrobes and lots of hangers, massive bed. At the risk of sounding like an oddball I didn't feel good about this hotel from the moment we arrived. We spent 2 nights there and that was plenty for me. The best thing is the view as previously mentioned this is spectacular and makes up for being a distance from the hustle and bustle that is Kandy. Rooms were adequate but nothing more. We too had items stolen from our room. Although staff were sent from housekeeping to 'help us look for them' the items were not found. An excellent hotel, views over hills and river from just about every window or balcony were great. The large rooms are well furnished with a good wet room shower and quiet aircon. Meals were good with a huge buffet selection. Being near the river watch out for the very active mossies in the evening, the rooms had mosquito killers that were put on every night by the maid. A good base to visit the Kandy area where you can relax in comfort.

Stayed here for 2 nights at the beginning of December. The lobby area is very impressive and we were greeted with refreshing towels and a cool drink. We had requested a room with a separate shower but this wasn’t the case when we were shown to our room. We asked to be moved and the manager did this very quickly and without question. Our new room was above the swimming pool and had great views over Kandy. The room was clean and spacious, but could possibly have benefited from a coat of paint. only spent one night here, but we were suffering with travellers stomaches and need ed a good rest, that was exactly what we got. great welcome, lovely service, spotless room, nice pool, comfy large room nothing to fault here it was expensive, but i didn't feel cheated.
