Great Hotel
We have been staying at the Santana since 1999 & are always very happy with our stay, we usully go 3-4 times a year & are going for christmas. The staff are very friendly especially Alfred & Jason the bar staff. The hotel is located in between Bugibba & Qawra & is just a few minutes walk to the main bus station, there are plenty of bars & resturants close by.
upgraded to penthouse
Arrived at 4.30am and were very tired. Originally booked a room in the Canifor Hotel, but were told at the last minute that we had to move to the Santana Hotel. There were three of us and the room we were given was very unsatisfactory in fact it was a two person room with three beds squeezed in. Next morning we went to the hotel manager to complain (very nice man with lots of patience). We eventually talked him round to showing us the only other available room which was number 701 (penthouse suite). It was at the top of the hotel just below the out door pool. Lovely accomodation, (had to pay the price!! easlily 5*) but got everything you could want, satelite TV, cooking facilities, private terrace. This hotel was advertised as 4* but we were not convinced of the rating once we had seen a couple of rooms. Food ok, reasonable choice of menu's, breakfast had lots of choices although you could not get bacon and fried eggs on the same day. Excellent position in centre, near bus station. Would stay there again. (But only in room 701!!)
Santana simply the best
WE spent another wonderful holiday in Malta staying at the Santana Hotel, after coming for many years we are treated as part of the family. We always take a superior room because you get all the facilities in it a fridge especially in summer the rooms are very clean and the chambermaid service is superb. We go half board basis and the food is excellent with a good variety of choice the staff are very friendly and helpful and if they dont have something you want they will try their very best to get it for you. My husband left his electric razor there in summer it was no problem the manager posted it over to us in Scotland. The hotel has a good atmosphere and we are now looking forward to returning in December to spend Xmas and New Year with our friends at the Santana
Enjoyed our stay
We had a great 1 week holiday on half-board at this hotel. The hotel was clean and the staff very pleasant. The restaurant in the basement had a very good selection of food. We had booked two double rooms. The shower did not work very well in one room and after mentioning this to desk staff, we were moved to a new room. Bedrooms were air conditioned and had fans, which was very much needed as it was very hot. The hotel was only one block away from the bus station which was ideal for touring the island and prices for travel were cheap. I don't think we would have hired a car as the roads and drivers are a bit crazy there. We only used the roof top pool which was never crowded so finding a free deck chair was never a problem. All in all a very enjoyable stay.
a lovely time
I have just enjoyed a lovely week in the Santanna Hotel in Malta, myself. wife and teenage daughter. Room was a good size and very clean with good air con,[ important in Malta] .the third bed for my daughter was a put you up, and not up to much. The pool area was really nice and never crowded, so sun beds were allways available, also nice bar for tea/food/beers ect with very pleasant staff. Would i go again? most definitely, i find Malta a great place to holiday, with everone very friendly. One last point, the beer is cheap in the bars, 80p>£1 a pint.
4 Star Deluxe or 4 Star Delusion?
The Sanatana Hotel. Booked at the last minute. 4 star deluxe said the travel agent. The photos in the brochure looked promising. My wife myself and our seven year old daughter booked an "all inclusive" 14 nights in this establishment. We arrived at 0529 hrs, were greeted by a night porter without the decency to help transfer our baggage off the street into the lobby. The original room was small and dingy. I "upgraded" next day to another room which was spacious but cost another £130 for the fortnight. The total cost now was approx £2,700. The dining room was in the basement. Dingy, some areas unpainted and neglected. The furniture looked new. The food however was THE worst experience. For an island in the Med, there was never a sign of fresh shellfish. Fish of ther day was never identified, the meals were monotonous, cooked vegetables were always frozen and processed. Fruit salads were directly out of a tin. The orange juice at breakfast was 0.95 maltese lira, (freshly squeezed), but no-one ever pointed out where the machines were serving processed orange juice which was freely available. The biggest cons were "Maltese night, Italian night and the Barbeque nights". All attracted an exrtra charge. The menu for the BBQ was the greatest work of fiction since Hans Christian Andersen wrote the Brothers Grimm.I really do refuse to believe that they employ a professional chef. Service was "OK" Alfred, the night bartender was very professional the rest were "pleasant". I would not recommend staying all inclusive, they really do treat you as the "captive audience" having already got the cash, the facilities drinks etc are very limited, no Baileys for instance, house wine straight out of the box which could be bought at the supermarket next door. Towards the end we resorted to eating out rather than face the particularly dreadful lunches. Malta as a whole acknowledges that it's inbound tourists are down at least 1.6% this year. To tell the truth, I am not surprised. Spain beats this lot "hands down", the guest is not taken for granted. Malta is a beautiful island which I intend to return to to experience it's many sights, however, next time it will be self catering."Once bitten twice shy" Don't even go there!!!
Good all round stay
Service here was excellent, from the moment we stepped off the coach, late at night. We'd paid for a superior room and weren't disappointed. Ensuite bathroom as good as you'd get anywhere at home, a seperate sleeping area with dressing table and wardrobes, under the ceiling fan! and another part separated by an arch which had sofa, dining table and chairs, with side tables, lamps and tv etc. The staff were very helpful and very friendly, without being in your face. Unfortunately, we hadn't expected the heatwave and were subject to 42degree temperatures and more, so we hardly left the hotel for the whole week. We'd booked early to avoid the worst of the heat, and neither of us coped very well with it. Thank heavens for excellent air conditioning and ceiling fans. We'd have been lost without these and the fridge!! The hotel restaurant was bright and clean and we had no issues with what was on offer every night (half board), we didn't try the La Mancha restaurant attached, but believe this was also excellent. There is a pool bar and 2 pools, one on the roof and one downstairs, along with the health & beauty spa. We both had a massage and we can tell you, its great. The 24hr internet cafe - we didn't see anyone use the internet facilities while we were there, so don't know how good they were, but would advise if you want to eat, that you use any of the other outlets on site. We had experience of cooked food being somewhat raw and also saw others returning their food. Everywhere else in the hotel was 100%when it came to food, so don't let that put you off. The cafe was still good for snacks like pastries and cakes etc. Supermarkets practically next door, along with a rang of bars and eating places, pharmacy and health clinic across the road in case of problems. We took a couple of excursions via our tour operator (Chevron Holidays) and as these were in airconditioned coaches, we made what use we could of the extremely hot weather. Would certainly recommend this hotel.
Easter Break
We had a ten day stay at the Santana. We arrived at three o'clock in the morning after an overnight flight. Staff friendly on arrival and check in very quick. Lovely comfortable foyer with leather armchairs. We had a superior room which was large with a small kitchenette, two sofa's and a balcony overlooking the car park. All the rooms at the front overlook the carpark. The hotel is situated right in the middle of lots of high rise appartments so any room will look out over more buildings. We had a karaoke bar across the street from us which kept us awake a few nights. The room was clean. Daily maid service changed the towels and cleaned up well. The bathroom was fine and pressure in the shower was good. We had hot water any time of day which was good for showers after swimming. We weren't interested in the TV so we didn't switch it on. It was useful to have a fridge to cool our water and packed lunch supplies. The indoor pool was heated and most days we had it to ourselves. It is small but we managed to do quite a bit of swimming. There is a gym, sauna and spa. These were not used at all during our stay. The sauna was always turned off. I was very dissappointed that the outdoor pool on the roof was empty and out of use. We were not told that it would be unavailable. Swimming is one of my main holiday musts so we were confined to the indoor pool. We sunbathed on the roof terrace but this was not really satisfactory due to there being no pool to jump into to cool off. It was very windy on the roof terrace with no view. We were on a half board deal with breakfast and evening meal. This was an excellent buffet and we all enjoyed the meals each day. If we wanted to swap the evening meal for lunch that was fine, you just told reception. After a few days the lack of a view in the restaurant and feeling that you were in the basement was a bit oppressive. We didn't linger at the end of meals. There was also no nice terrace for an evening drink as the hotel is on the main road. The hotels situation in Qwara is excellent for all the local buses. We got a bus every day and went to look at the island. The hotel staff were very helpful with bus timetables. Qwara was like a Maltese Blackpool. It seemed a bit cheap and tacky so we didn't spend much time there. Next time if we went to Malta again we would not stay in such a touristy resourt, we would stay nearer to Valletta or Mdina.
Enjoyed Hotel Santana with helpful staff
We stayed in a studio/junior suite with partial kitchen for 7 nights in November 2005 and paid well over twice the going rate to a marketing company ! There are a few points whcih the hotel could improve. e.g. the poor 14 inch TV reception with just 2 free view channels in English, lack of water pressure in the shower & no washing machine or dish washer. Yes from the balcony, some may find the view as Bagdad ! Santana Hotel has good location with helpful staff like the friendly people of Malta. We enjoyed our stay and we would return to Malta for 14 nights to celebrate Christmas & New Year -Once again in Hotel Santana's junior suite.
Nice Hotel
Although officially classed as a 4* hotel, i felt this rating a little high, but do not let this cloud your judgement, this is a very good hotel. Check is bright airy, very efficient and well informed. We had a Standard room, 2 single beds, balcony, bathroom. The rooms are a little on the small side but still roomy enough for two people. View over the city out to the harbour (sea View a bonus!). The bathrooms are of average side but could benefit from a refit, water pressure poor in the shower but bright and clean. My main complaint would be rooms poorly lit for my taste (some may call it ambient lighting, i call it dark), and small tv with limited choice evem on Pay tv @ 2.99ML per day. Maid and room service good, towels changed every day linen every 5 days. Choice of restaurants good, with food as good as anywhere else on the island. Staff courteous, knowledgeble and efficient. To sum up a good hotel, decor a little tired in places but definate value for money. I will stay here again
