Very disappointing..........
Was really looking forward to staying here, when looked on websites it boosted an above average hotel and was expecting that as well. The entrance into the hotel is very grand but the further you go into the hotel, the carpets become shappy, the paint on the walls are crumbling, overall the appearance is not very good as you spread out into the hotel. I stayed in a standard room which has 2 queen beds, TV, minibar and balcony (overlooking the bar pool, which is very noisy, especially at teatime!). The 'maid service' is very basic, they make the beds and change the towels but that is it really - nothing more than you would get in a basic hotel. The staff are hit and miss - one day they may smile and great you the next they won't . The same can be said about the staff on reception, it depends what hour of the day you go and who is there to depend on whether you are greeted with a welcoming smile or just simply stared at! I would recommed the 24hr cafe, excellent cakes and value for money. They have 3 swimming pools, all get very very busy and if you would like to spend the day at the pool you need to do the usual getting up at 7.00am to reserve sunbeds! I wouldn't say the hotel was dreadful, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is expecting the upper end of accommodation that it imples is offered. Its clean(ish) in most parts. What I would recommend is pampering in their in-house spa - a lovely experience.
excellent hotel
4 star. Public places, large and well maintained. Large parking outside. The hotel is quite big, but there is enough staff to scope with the maintenance. Restaurant: I used only the Menhir Restaurant for breakfast. Enough space for the buffets and this avoids cues. Large choice in breads, warm buffets.. Even when the orange juice comes out of a machine, it tastes as fresh juice and not as a "over watered mixture" ! Enough staff to do the service. The restaurants is large and can take enough people. It has a nice view over the bay. Rooms: Rooms are clean, well maintained and have nice furniture. A quality television providing international channels. Bathroom clean and furnished with bad foam soap etc. and the cranes and hairdryer are working properly. This means a lot as mostly here you can judge the weakest place of the room. Facilities: At the swimming pools and the small public beach on the rocky coast arranged with some concrete construction there are enough chairs available. The fact that there are several pools, avoids overcrowding. Note: the remark of another reviewer about the "reservation of chairs with towels" seems to be a practise that you find everywhere in the wordl. It is not really the fault of the hotel management. They could puit of course a "friendly request", but the " tourists" are so well disciplinated the last years that I doubt about the result. Conclusions: In general, Malta has a problem that when some owners invested in a hotel, they don't care anymore and only look for revenue without further investment and results are sometimes disappointing. However the New Dolmen proofs that a Maltese resort can be a 4 star also beyond the reception area! New Dolmen is worth their 4 stars and it is an excellent hotel which I can recommend.
defo going back
we booked our flights and hotel seperate, worked out much cheaper than travel agents airmalta have very cheap flights if you get them early 250 euro per person.... When we arrived at the hotel we were informed check in time was not until 2 pm but we were very pleased when they made our room early at 11 am ... the rooms are very clean but basic, the air conditioner was broken but it was fixed within hours after we complained they could not have been more helpfull. if i was going next year i would defo book a seaview room it is well worth it. the breakfeast is very nice all the usual , a choice for everything, beans, toast , egg , frut etc. we ate at the pool side bar which was really nice burgers wraps cakes etc The hotels pool areas were so nice, absolulty great view of the bay right in front of you. In the evening there is plenty to do in the hotel the casino is great fun and you dont need to spend much, the amazonia nightclub is good fun for a dance and cocktails open wed- sat , but our favourite was the wine bar , so romantic. we never tried the food in the hotel other than the day time cafe because of the wide choice of restaurants around the hotel looking over the bay. villa mare is a lovely place to eat. it is a quiet area for nightlife so 2 of the nights we went on 15 min bus ride to the nightlife centre which was brill when the italy won the final the whole island went crazy, also the blue lagoon is a must do and valleta the capital is lovely for sightseeing i would recommend it 100 % for couples familys and people wanting a nice relaxing holiday!!!
Dolman Disappoints
First saw this hotel in the off season last year when we were staying elsewhere in the Bugibba Bay area. Fancied staying there this year and booked it with Thomas Cook paying a £112 extra for a room with a sea view. Big mistake as ended up on the 2nd floor room 203 with a sea view over 5 air conditioning units less than 20ft away which service the 24 hr cafe delos below. Avoid rooms 201 to 215 like the plague as you will be unable to use your balcony due to the air conditioning noise which is going 24hrs a day. The 5 air conditioning units were those just in front of room 203 and numerous others stretch right across rooms 201 to 215. The servicing of the room was minimal in some aspects, but sheets and towels were replaced regularly. The hotel night club on the beach is also a problem with its booming music going on until 3 am every morning but it was competing in my case with the air conditioners in front of the balcony. Quality of staff and service varies. The worst was in the cafe delos where indifference to the customer abounds, but the service in the main restaurant was great. Raymond, one of the two restaurant managers was very efficient and all meals were excellent. Watch out in the summer season for groups of marauding students on organised trips using the beach club facilities. They stay elsewhere and then use the boat trip facilties at the beach club. This is sanctioned as a source of income by the hotel but they are a noisy, uncontrolled nuisance to residents and are inevitably allowed to roam free by their minders. The sunbeds around the two main pools are all reserved using towels by 9 am, a despicable habit which the British now seem to embrace. The beach club restaurant staff were excellent due to their manager and it seemed to me that hotel areas in which the quality of service was poor was where there was no effective supervision in place. The ruins described as authentic? are nothing to write home about as are the Spa facilities which I found to be depressing and dirty. This hotel looks stunning on a first glance but is let down generally by a young staff that need to be taught that service does not mean servility. I would go again off season but in Summer would probably go up a star to the Fortina or the Coastline Hotel. Malta is definetly more expensive than last year and there are no shopping bargains to be had as it imports literally everything and is taking to EEC membership with enthusiasm.
Very decent hotel
We stayed at this hotel from 27th June to 4th July and had a lovely time. We were on an allocation on arrival and this was our third choice out of the 3 hotels due to its location. The other 2 were in Mellieha which we would have preferred. However, when we arrived at the hotel, we were not disappointed. We were given a sea view room although we had not paid for this. The balcony was very small and you couldn't really sit 2 chairs side by side but we were just grateful to be able to see the sea! The room was quite small but plenty big enough for the 2 of us and we didn't spend much time in the room. The location is actually very nice and the promenade along the sea front is lovely to walk along at night. They are currently in the process of creating a sandy beach although it looks very small. However, it will make the area very pleasant. We were able to lounge on the rocks and it is easy to swim in the sea but beware of the jellyfish!!! There are 4 pools - one of which is salt water and very quiet down by the sea, one is noisy as all the entertainment goes on there, one is for children and the other is just outside the cafe (our favourite!) The food was very good - we have had a lot of experience with buffet style half boards and you should always expect that the food is going to be similar each night but just cooked differently! Breakfasts were very good. The bar on the sea front is lovely. There are little wooden seats with leather cushions and it overlooks the bay which is lit up and looks very pretty. It is also very quiet and romantic so we spent many hours sipping baileys! We didn't try the club or the casino and on the first night I could hear the music in our room, but after 11pm, it was quiet. As a word of warning, we hired a rental car from Europcar for 5 days and on the first day we had it, we broke down as there was not enough water in the car and we overheated. We actually put 5 litres of water in the car and couldn't believe that Europcar would not perform these basic safety checks before giving a car. I would think again about using Europcar. In general though, we loved this hotel and would recommend it. We visited the Mellieha Bay hotel and actually thought the Dolmen was nicer. If you want to go diving, we would recommend Aquaventure centre at the Mellieha Bay as the staff were English and really helpful.
Never again
We stayed together in a group 4 days in this hotel. Although booked seaview and confirmed 3rd floor and higher, most of the participants got rooms on the 2nd floor, which meant view to the air conditioning ventilators. The staff at the reception was very lazy and not really interested in solving our problems. The Hotel has very different rooms. I stayed in a very tiny one others were in very large ones (mostly the singles!!!) all at the same price. My balcony was so small, that you could not sit on a chair. The sea (seaview) could only be seen from a specific place of the room. All in all the rooms have to be updated. On one evening the watersystem has broken down, so that no one could get a shower for having dinner. When you step into the elevators you fear that you will not arrive on your floor, because they are very old and do make strange noises. They are represented with 4 stars but this is not a 4 star hotel. The rooms on the 5th floor have a nice view, but are smelling very strange so that you can't stand it. You will hear noise in most of the rooms from the discothek all night long. I have to say, that the location of the hotel is not bad, it has many pools and they have lounge chairs at the beach, which is a rock-beach. The food in the restaurant (halfboard) is quite good, although the buffet is crowded by the the hotel-residents and sometimes they are not able to fill it up. If you are planning a trip to Malta go elsewhere
Pretty good alround
My husband and I have just returned from a 2 week break at the Dolmen Resort. Having read all of the reviews on this site and many others I was quite apprehensive about what we would find upon arrival but all in all we had a good time at the Dolmen. Granted, I did do a lot of research into where to stay and knew what to expect of the resort and the hotel. Upon arrival we were allocated a modern room but without a balcony/terrace as we had specified so we went down to reception immediately and were given keys to another room that did which was larger but not as modern in decor but was very clean and comfortable. We did not opt to pay the extra £260.00 for a sea view as some people had so our view was of the tennis courts to the rear which also looked out over the bus terminus so if you like to sit outiside on a balcony to admire the sea view then it may be well worth paying the supplement. A couple we met at the hotel had paid for a sea view room but were not at all happy with the size of their balcony (it really was small) and after they complained they were moved several days later. Like any holiday people either have good or not so good experiences but we had nothing to complain about really other than the freak weather (it rained two or three times) which was not too bad as the Dolmen has an indoor pool/spa as well. The hotel also has 3 pools on different levels and access to the sea which we did tentatively swim in as there was a lot of jellyfish around. There was a pool that was more geared up for the much younger guests with an animation team on-site. Food at the hotel was buffet style for breakfast and dinner - food was average, nothing special but the staff were all very friendly and accommodating towards us. There is also a cafe (Cafe Delos) that is on site serving its own menu and has a variety of cakes that were better than the ones served with the evening meal in the dining room. In terms of evening entertainment this was rather disappointing - we are in our early 30's and nothing appealed to us at all really - the bar mainly showed sports on their large TV screen and the entertainment was either line dancing evenings (not our cup of tea at all) or the usual chap with his keyboard. Again, it's what you make of it so we had our own fun sampling the many cocktails and making friends with other guests. On the whole the resort is not renound for its scenery (i.e. Bugibba or Qawra) but we chose this hotel for its facilities and location (excellent bus routes) and visited many places including the breathtaking Valletta, Mdina and Rabat, Gozo and Comino. If you're looking for a more Maltese atmosphere try St Julians or Sliema or even St Pauls bay a little further around from Bugibba. The only noise pollution we suffered from was from the A/C units on the building next to us but that's about it - it's a large hotel so it's pot luck as to what you get but this applies to most places. I have heard people say you either like Malta or really take a disliking to it - we had a really good time and the people are so endearing and kind hearted - there are some great places to visit if you're willing to venture out of the resort and the hotel was more than comfortable.
Avoid if you want a peaceful holiday
Myself and my fiance booked 2 weeks in the Dolmen having seen their website which made it look like peaceful bliss- the sound of waves as the background music to the website would lead you to assume that this is a quiet, peaceful hotel. Unfortunately, the noise from the hotel nightclub across the road from the hotel kept us awake until 4am every night for 10 nights until eventually, exhausted, upset and really annoyed we checked out and moved to a quieter hotel in the South of Malta at extra cost to ourselves. At that stage, we were having such a dreadful holiday that we were willing to pay full price for a room at another hotel to salvage the last few days of our holiday. While at the Dolmen, we complained several times about the noise and were basically told 'It's busy, get over it!'. That would be fine if we had expected to be staying in Malta's version of Ibiza but we had expected a quiet holiday as that's precisely how they advertise themselves. We called down to the nightclub twice when we couldn't sleep to see why there was so much noise coming from there which we realised was because they had large speakers outside on the beach. On both nights there was only a small crowd in the nightclub so the hotel were happy to keep all their guests awake all night for the sake of a handful of clubbers. We weren't alone in having this problem - one of the days that we complained there were 2 other groups there at the same time also complaining about the same thing. So, go with the Dolmen if you like the hear 'boom boom boom' in your room until 4am every night (followed at 9am by your wake up call from the entertainment team by the pool outside your room). However, if you want to relax, avoid at all costs. If you want a relaxing holiday try another resort also as Qawra is tacky. We moved to Marsalata a lovely fishing village down south for the last 4 days and slept with the sound of waves crashing outside. We couldn't recommend that hotel (Corinthia) highly enough for peace and quiet.
Fawlty Towers?
A large group (ie 120+) stayed here for a meeting. I had looked at the web site beforehand and thought we were in for a real treat, but this is an illusion. Whilst the lobby area is lovely, and the restaurants are good (although service can be interminably slow), the rooms varied widely. Some were quite small and pokey, furniture is shabby, and the door onto the balcony in my room did not close properly, which meant that for the four days of gale force winds, all I could hear throughout the night was the wind whistling through the crack. Another issue is showers - mine did not have a proper shower, just the handheld hose, no shower screen, and I was not able to change rooms. A major problem is lack of internet facilities - for such a large hotel to only have one computer available for guest use is not acceptable. Wireless internet was available but only if you brought your computer to the lobby, or as we found out late in the stay, if you are on the sixth floor! There are many oddities about this hotel and the staff (like WHY does it take 3 chambermaids to go around putting a chocolate next to everyone's bed at night - they don't close the curtains or turn back the bed, just put a chocolate in the room..) and we wondered if they had been to the Basil Fawlty school of Hotel Traineeship. The hotel is OK, but I would choose somewhere more sheltered from the weather and less run down.
A Good Hotel
Me and my partner have just spent one month at the new dolmen hotel and can sum it up in one word (EXCELLENT). The hotel reception and facilities are excellent, The staff are helpful and polite,The food is good ,And in a great location in Buggiba. However On arrival we were allocated a room over looking the main road after paying £230 for a see veiw,But when as soon as we had complained at reception our room was changed without any problems. (When booking request a room with a balcony not all the rooms have them) Apart from that everything was good we will be visiting this hotel again in the near future.
