The Mercure (San Antonio) -Bugibba, Malta.
This hotel is situated just 50 Metres from the seafront of a busy tourist resort. It is a large hotel, part of the French Accor group, offering outstanding service and facilities.
Facilities include 2 outside pools, 1 inside heated, all very clean and suitable for young children. A proper and well equipped health club with 2 saunas and steam room. Numerous bars dotted around the hotel. Kiddie’s game room, outside table tennis. Again for the kiddies a children’s club 9.30 - 12.00 and 2.00 - 5.00, 7 days a week. With good enthusiastic staff and well organised activities.
According to the brochure 295 rooms. For the price we paid, I was quite surprised at the large room we were given for my family. A large double bed, a sofa bed for the 2 kids, 2 balconies with a sea view, cleaned daily with clean towels and linen daily. Very large en-suite. Light and airy with Air con, fridge, TV.
The food, was outstanding. All meals buffet. Breakfast (included in all packages) - Fresh fruit, cheeses and hams, traditional English cooked, and continental buffets. Evening meal (upgrade cost just £8 per adult £4 per child) was outstanding. The largest salad selection I have ever seen (always a choice of at least 10 different local and continental salads). Selection of 5 main dishes - including always a carved roast and always 1 local fish dish. In addition hot vegetables buffet. Desserts not my thing, but wife enthused about different pies, cakes and local desserts. Home made bake well tart was good.
Evening entertainment 7 days a week in a special fun bar far enough away from hotel not to disturb you if you wanted a bit of piece and quiet or an early night. Entertainment was a kiddies disco 8.30 - 9.00 twice a week and then afterwards singer, local dance group, salsa night, from 9.00 till late.
Staff polite and always keen to help. I would say that service was hectic at evening meal, as so very busy, and with lots of non residents eating in the restaurant.
I would have rated this hotel 10 out of 10, except that location is not ideal. The resort of Bugibba mainly caters for the budget English tourist, and as such has mainly cheap and sometimes nasty accommodation (a hotel 200m up the road was featured on ‘Holidays from Hell’ both this year and last).
This did not spoil our holiday in the slightest as we were able to get out and about and visit the beautiful sights of Malta using local bus service, major bus terminal 5 minutes walk up the street.

If you smoke Malta is definitely a no, no but I don't suppose that it will matter for much longer. We originally intended to hire a car but the public transport is much more fun you can practically see the whole Island in a couple of days.
The only real downside are the timeshare touts, they are a nightmare.
