We called it the 'barracks'
from ladyleisureEssex
We have just returned from the Cardor Holiday complex, a very grand name for a block of apartments that were cold and unattractive looking. We had booked for Christmas and New Year and unfortunately the weather was not good, it rained for two days and the rain was pouring into the lift through the light fittings, however we were told that this was not considered a problem by the maintenance men! The lifts also had a loud ringing tone whenever the doors opened so you were kept awake when guests were arriving or leaving during the night. The security lighting shined through to our bedroom so I wore an eyeshade the whole night. The adjoining hotel the Canifor was where we had all our meals, we were on an all inclusive basis, Christmas Day lunch consisted of cold meat, vegetables and chips, but we were told we could have paid extra to have a gala lunch, The apartments were basic, we were grateful for the small oven and tiny radiator that took the edge off the cold atmosphere given off by the tiled floors , there were no rugs. These apartments were advertised as an upgrade to the main hotel so one wonders what the hotel rooms were like.I dont think I have ever heard so many people complaining about their accomodation and wishing they could cut short their visit.
Don't Go There

Returned on 2nd October 2007. The complex was shabby and dirty in places. We had fresh towels every day, but the sheets were not changed at all during our stay. We booked two apartments. One for two adults and one for three. Our three bedroom apartment consisted of a shabby kitchen and two fake leather chairs which were ripped and dirty. A long corridor with views of the service shaft and a bedroom with two single beds pushed to one side and a camp bed with a solid wooden base which was for the third adult, our 29 year old son. It looked like a scene from "porridge" We asked to be moved to a more suitable apartment or room, but were told that the hotel was overbooked and there was nothing available. After complaining to our holiday rep, the only compromise was the addition of a further mattress on the campbed. Most of the guests we talked to had similar problems. One family of five adults had been placed in the sme room with three campbeds, after booking two rooms as we had.The food was basic. Sometimes good and sometimes bad. It was certainly not good value for money as we had paid for all inclusive, but only had lunch once and the place was so crowded that we spent most of the time away from it.The pool was small and the sunbeds packed. However dont expect to sunbathe in an afternoon as the sun goes behind the buildings and the whole of the pool and sunbed area is in the shade from around 12 noon. Managers were never available, always in meetings or had gone home and the reception staff seemed unable to make even the most simple decision. We spent four hours on our last morning trying to track down the accomodation manager to see if we could have a courtesy room until the evening, as were were not being picked up until 9.30 p.m. When we eventually got an answer ,it was no help and although we knew that there were available rooms, we were not allowed to use one. On our last day we were only allowed either lunch or dinner in our all inclusive package. This has got to be the worst hotel we have ever stayed at throughout the world. Fawlty Towers with sunshine. We even had to line up for breakfast. Thank goodeness we hired a car to take us around. The complex is not one where you would want to spend a prolonged length of time. Some guests were lucky enough to find accomodation elsewhere and booked ouit of the complex within hours of arriving.I would advise anyone to stay away from this complex and find other accomdation. The front of the hotel carries a sign with four stars. This should be minus four.A terrible hotel, run down, dirty and with unhelpful staff. DONT GO!!!!!!

Just had a week at the Cardor, the rooms were large , the balcony had the sun all day & was private. The pool shared with the Canifor was great. Good cheap holiday, rooms basic but clean - would recommend it!
Basic but nice

About us: young couple, hired a car, stayed for a week in a 1 bed apartment for about £100 in September. The room: Nice kitchen/dining area and one bedroom - unfortunately not a double as requested, but the twin beds pushed together with the two duvets laid over was comfortable enough. Everything was clean, if a little tired. The shower was over the bath, but no holder on the wall. The hotel in general: It shares everything with the Canifor - breakfast was included in our price, and had a good variety on offer. The pools are very chemically - almost to the point of cloudiness...and quite small really. Doesn't have a car park, but on-street parking was always available outside the Canifor while we were there. I'd recommend to anyone on a budget, and those who value space over decor. Expect little, be willing to compromise on the details (double bed, shower, no a/c) and you'll have a pleasant base to work from to see a great country.
3* i think not

My partner & I have stayed in Malta many times before, mostly on a budget staying in 2* apartments, so booked holiday for his 30th birthday - the description read 3*, newly decorated etc etc.. so I booked up - we arrived at 9pm I was horrified, it was filthy dirty, the windows didn't lock, the handles actually fell off in my partner hands, the bath had not been scrubed, the curtains were filthy, the front door had a bit of wood covering what appeared to be previoulsy a piece of glass, peeling paintwork - We didn't unpack, didn't sleep we complained and got moved the the sister hotel Carnifor, this hotel was excellent, 4*, air conditioning, cleaners everyday. we had to pay extra but was worth every penny.. Book with care - you have been warned
certainly a first

arrived 20th august and left on the 20th august. booked 2 bed apartment which turned out to be at best a corridor at worst a tunnel. No windows, no natural light, the apartment was in fact a studio and we were a mixed group of people - my husband, a close female friend in 40's and my 6 year old son. No privacy possible due to no doors! it was certainly a first. the first time I have seen anything so dirty or shabby, anything so unsuitable, something barely 2 star rated and sold as 3star plus, and the first time I have dealt with uncomprimising staff (receptionist went home so we dealt with conifer staff). first time in over 20 years of extensive travel I have left a hotel completely and relied upon a taxi driver (you can usually rely on taxi drivers to find suitable places) to find me and my party including my 6 year old son somewhere to stay. Still trying to get money paid up front in May back. Would not recommend, it would compare poorly to most other types and ranges of accomodation and I am still struggling to think of who I could recommend it to. We were just lucky we were in a position to be able to pay for another place to stay many families are not.
Shabby

We booked a two bedroom apartment with kitchen at the Dorirose. We were told it was two star. The whole place is shabby with paint peeling off the walls. One of the beds was so uncomfortable that we had to put blankets on the mattress before our son could sleep on it. Various lights did not work and the fride and shower curtain were dirty. The door to the balcony did not slide freely, and the safe was broken. Most days, the reception is not manned in the afternoon, so the outside doors, which are a fire exit, are locked. Entrance in this case is via the Canifor hotel. We did not bother to complain, as we felt that it would be a waste of time.
great value

Great holiday just over £100 for a week in july not the ritz, but cleaned & beds made every day + large balcony patio set + 2 sun loungers sun all day if overlooking pools, but this was a top floor apt could be classed as same level as UK holiday flat could be little painted up, but for the price good value! . tv, desk fan, fridge, also near qawra bus station to get about the island cheaply

We booked into the Dorrirose, and recv'd our confirmarition that it was on Triq il turisti. We spent two hours looking for the place... you have to enter via the Canifor Hotel. When we were shown to our room (out through the back of the Canifor into what looks like a disused area) it wasn't as we had booked (two single beds rather than one double and a single). We went back to the reception, were shown two more rooms, both with only two single beds. It was only when i said i wished to check out and go somewhere else did they show me a room at Canifor Court.... this was a seperate bulind a two minute walk from the main hotel, and the room as much better. it had air con and a balcony and was much more modernised. The dorrirose is cheap, but I'm glad i didn't end up staying there.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by Jessie (the manager, receptionist, cleaner and all round super woman) She was very helpful and directed us to our rooms. The rooms were basic but clean, and then cleaned further everyday of our holiday, in addition to clean towels... more
