Awfull hotel with bad food in the restaurants and very, very bad service from employees! Would never stay there again!
Laud music from the pool every night - and we even paid extra for the pool view!
The same 4 songs played every day by the pool side. All day!

We stayed in the Topaz from 7-14 November 2010 and had a lovely time. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the facilities really good, the room (which included self-catering facilities even though we were half-board) was clean, tidy and well-provisioned. The meals... more

4 Star ? Maybe 3 star
The hotel is listed in some reviews as 4 star and that is what I expected. Some other reviews list it as 3 star and that is about what we got, although I have stayed in better 3 star accommodation. The reception area is the only 4 star area. We had several nights of disturbed sleep from guests walking and talking in the tiled corridors. Carpet would deaden the sound but the long, narrow corridors echo and amplify the noise. The food was OK, but definitely not 4 star. For half board and all inclusive guests, the hotel offers an option to swap a meal in the normal restaurant for a meal in their pizza restaurant next door. DO NOT use this option because the value of the pizza meal is approximatley half the value of the normal restaurant, plus you still have to pay for the extras. Also the salad here was not fresh and had bits of tuna through it. Obviously the salad had been a tuna salad leftover from earlier in the day (or previous day ?) then they picked out most of the tuna and served it as green salad. The hotel is in a run down condition throughout except for the reception area. It needs a coat of paint and some general maintenance - as detailed below 1. Although crime is low in Malta and we did not have any problems, our balcony door would not lock. 2. The toilet would not flush properly 3. The mattresses were lumpy, uncomfortable and noisy Malta overall was enjoyable and the buses are definitely the way to travel. You can also get multiple day tickets which offer good savings over single trip fares.
Only nice on pictures !
We stayed there for the week of 29/08/05. We were quite impressed by the reception and the check in was very fast. However that was the only convenient thing in this hotel. Everything looked so messy and of bad-quality ! First the lift was out of order, which makes two months according to a previous review ! Then our bathroom was quite dirty and the toilets were not working. We had asked the whole week for fixing the toilets but they never worked properly, even worse it seems that the staff knew it before we arrived. Once our room door blocked itself and there was no way to enter the room, a rude security guy came, complaining because it seems to happen quite frequently. We read on the brochure that there was "an indoor pool heated in winter", which actually means for them: "closed in summer"! The outdoor pool was small and closed at 8pm, which is a bit early if you want to spend time visiting the island. We actually came back to the hotel one day at 7pm and decided to enjoy the pool. But the staff was already cleaning the pool area and at 7:30pm we were kindly invited to leave the pool as it was "almost" 8pm !! The pool area was awful, all the chairs were broken, the matresses dirty, the "volley area" totally destroyed. Everything in this hotel is old and very bad maintained. It seems that the bathrooms are only clean with water, without soap. The staff is not really friendly and you have to ask twice to get something for breakfast. We were quite happy to leave this hotel honestly, and wouldn't go back there. It's everything but a 4 star hotel. I wouldn't dare to give it 2 stars !
fab half board holiday
We booked a half board holiday at the topaz and was very surprised after reading previous reviews. It had very nice hot/cold buffet food every night. It is an all you can eat buffet so all you have to pay for is drinks with your meal in the evening. Breakfast was quite good too and you could have either a juice or tea/coffee every morning. If you like lazing about by the pool then you would love this. There is usually entertainment every night by the pool which kids love. The rooms are very comfortable and the maid service is very good. You get fresh towels every day and your room cleaned. We would definitley go again.
Fantastic half-board holiday! Could not fault anything!!
I returned from a weeks holiday at the Topaz on 31/8/05 and after reading previous reviews was a little concerned to say the least. I was ready to expect the worst, particularly in view that we paid peanuts for the hotel stay. Well, the room was clean, very spacious and with a balcony overlooking the front. The food was unbelievable - I have never eaten so well or seen so much variety- there were at least 5 main dishes to choose from every night including a carvery of quality meat - different each night!! This was my sixth visit to Malta and I know that a four star hotel there is not usually to the same standard as a four star elsewhere-but I was pleasantly surprised and could not have asked for anything more!! Would certainly go again without hesitation!!
Not a four star hotel
We booked two rooms, one for a family of four and one twin, when we arrived at the hotel they put us as three and three which we didnt want and we didnt book it that way. We were so tired because it was 5.15am we just said ok to the rooms and will sort it out later. We got to our rooms on the first floor, both rooms had two beds which is great when there are 3 people in each room. After finally getting to sleep, we opened the curtains to be faced with a topless woman sunbathing, our room was on the same level as the pool with a tiny window. So we would end up living in the dark for a whole week as we couldnt leave our curtains open, it just went on and on about the rooms, in the end we got moved to the fourth floor and it was ok. The rooms were clean but it had no fridge and remote control, if you wanted these you had to pay more, which for a four star hotel is a joke. Lets just say i wouldnt go off the ratings in the future.
Not a 4* but nice all the same
All in all, the hotel itself is fine...Our room was a little shabby but we decided that we spend so little time in the room that it was fine. The food was fantastic, we stayed 2 weeks AI and it was our first time anywhere AI, it was well worth the money. The pool was lovely, the hotel in an ideal position. The maid service was fantastic, towels and room cleaned every single day, if we had a Do not Disturb sign on the door (as the maids sometimes arrived really early), then they would ALWAYS leave clean towels in a bag hanging on the door. The staff are fantastic, and brilliant with the kids. As i said, the food was good, lots of selection, and the hot food was always hot! I would defiantely return here.
Terrible.. to award this hotel a four star is a farce!!
We stayed at the Topaz hotel for one week arriving 28 June 2005. When we walked through the foyer, we were reasonably impressed but thats where the good impressions stopped!! The lift was out of order and by the end of the week another lift further down the corridor had broken down! Our first room terrace led to a parked car (we were street level in a concrete jungle). Changed rooms to a higher floor (room 4404). The shower was mouldy, the sink did not sit correctly on its pedestal and was held together with mastic!! The toilet was not too spicy and bodily hairs lay untouched on the floor - not exactly what we'd call four star quality!! The food was slop - unfortunately, we had gone half board (we managed to eat two evening meals but spent the rest of the holiday eating out) - prisoners would strike if they were dished up the rubbish we had. The choice was extremely limited, and if you were vegeterian you'd come back a stone lighter!! The resort itself consisted of a cheap tacky promenade, advertising `pukka pies'`chip pattys' and had bumper cars and candyfloss. The streets were strewn with dogs mess - I would not return to Malta and certainly not Bugibba (St. Julians the next resort along was okay) This hotel is TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy
If you want to go back in a time warp to the 60's, Malta and especially this hotel is the place to go. I have fond memories of my times at Butlins I did not expect to find them recreated in the twenty first century. The foyer is 5 star the rest of the hotel is 1 star, the food is bad, the staff are awful, the hotel is a complete health and safety hazard, especially the dining room which is an accident waiting to happen . Toured the whole of the island, the people seem to feel they are doing u a favour, found it difficult to get good food in hygenic conditions. Whatever you order u get something else. Gozo completely different people friendly and ready to be helpful, food and drink good on this island. The whole Malta island is one huge rubbish tip including the capital (if u want pigeons to share your meal on the table this is the place to be!!!) Room 3367 at the Topaz should be avoided at all costs, no balcony, wall of next block 10 foot away is your view, toilet seat broken, shower is attached to taps, electric wires held together by insulation tape............need i say more. From this room to the dining room involves the use of 3 lifts and a walk of about 800 yards, simply walking across the road between two blocks not possible you have to go down to the basement and walk under the road!!!!!!!!
good accomodation shame about the food
Good Hotel and staff, rooms very good and very clean but the food was bland and very little choice also badly cooked
pretty good, but lacked latin passion
on entering the reception my mouth watered at the maarbled hal vala that we were greeted with. oh lordy id give anything to come in again...alas. well, the food was ok, one night i ate beef (exotic) and on the whole the rooms were ok, if you dont mind dripping blood, which i dont, i believe it hints and the realism of our oh so harsh world. So yeah, it was ok, but if the receptionists would have used more innuendos or tipped the occasional wink, i would have been in a village just south of heaven. goodbye topaz, and fare the well..... xxxx
