Topaz Hotel Reviews
" Lovely holiday, helpful staff "
Submitted By: StowieOur room was on the second floor, there are no amazing views from the hotel but our (small) balcony faced in towards the pool area (rather than the street) so was fine by us. There were 3 lifts that we could use and although there was ofer one out of order, there was always one to use (especially important being 6 months pregnant and with the temperatures creeping over 40 degrees!)
Over our week, the room was cleaned daily with new towels each time. The room was obviously old and not in it's prime, but it was clean and fit for purpose. The kettle, fridge, air con and oven/grill all worked fine and as we don't go away to sit in the room for very long we were more than comfortable.
Some of the sun beds were old and a bit tatty, but we managed to find comfy ones and could always nab an umbrella too. The pool is a good size and nice and refreshing for when you need to cool off - it's big enough to have a bit of a swim if the mood takes you too!
The people on reception were really helpful when we had queries, and the little shop was handy for water and snacks. We ate out rather than using the restaurant facilities so can't comment on the food. We found a number of places to eat out near the sea front - approx 10-15 mins walk away and all served a mixture of dishes and we never had a bad meal.
Plenty of snorkelling and diving is available locally. If you go to the blue lagoon on Comino (which is a lovely spot and nice for a little snorkelling) be prepared that there aren't many facilities here and as it is mostly rocky you will need to pay for deckchairs and brollies if you want to relax out of the water. Malta isn't the place to go if you like long sandy beaches!
Advice: Friendly place, good for watersports and lots of trips to do if that's your thing!
Activities: Contrary to expectations fat harry's (or something along those lines) serve great food!
" Make sure u are in the hotel and not in the apartments "
Submitted By: apersonThe room was basic but clean. The beds were comfy but the view was awful. The maid we had was amazing. If we ever needed her to come back a bit later as we weren’t ready to go yet she was always happy to do that.
We had breakfast included in our package. The breakfast was always nice and fresh. Bugibba was lovely. It takes about 10 minutes to walk down there. The rep told us the complete wrong was to go and our way was a lot quicker, (from the hotel turn left, then right then left, you will see a cinema, follow along that road until u come to a crossing you need to cross over the road where the road forks off but stay on the left and keep going straight on) The shops there were very good. But make sure to check how much they charge you. I went to buy a photo frame and a candle both priced at 2 euro’s each, the lady behind the counter tried to charge me over 6 euro’s each for them.
The food places in Bugibba are very cheap with good service. I highly recommend the place but I don’t speak that highly of the hotel. It did however have an indoor and outdoor pool. Both clean. Also a little shop and a hairdresser were both on site at the hotel.
Advice: very nice little town, cheap bus service

" Lovely, Relaxing Break "
Submitted By: asbThe area itself was great too, quiet with a real family vibe, no beach but that was cool as we had a nice big swimming pool which we never had a problem getting sunbeds around. We hired a little motor boat too around the harbour and had fun going around the sea in it for an hour. The night entertainment was bad but who cares when theres a free bar! We got a bargain with this holiay so we could afford to try the local restaurants, we lovedddddd the Indian one, sorry i dont remember the name but im sure theres only one in the town. A few nice shops too around the front of the harbour and just arond the corner from the hotel is a cinema! We contemplated weather to go in a few times but didnt but it looked just like what we would expect from home with current movies popcorn etc...
Found one small nightclub which was rather questionable haha, i thought ide been thrown into one of the cheesey bars in ibizas west end!
Malta is really cheap too so even if you fancy a change from the usual hotel food and entertainmment then you can afford to. (we got a breakfast one morning which cost just 2 maltese pounds. BARGAIN.
Cant think of any bad things really, had a lovely time just what we needed. :)
Advice: Lovely relaxing place, but not for people who go on holiday for the beach, great for harbour fishing
Activities: Indian restaurant nere the shops close to sea front.
" Fantastic! "
Submitted By: eeyorebaby22The reception was clean and inviting, staff are friendly and helpful.
We had read comments about maids seeming to be a pain and things going missing - we had a different maid every day! but they were always polite and friendly. And if your worried about things going missing just use the saftety diposit box!
We were SC basis, the room was big light and airy, comfy bed, the bathroom usual hotel basic but fresh towels and bed linnen daily.
The kitchen was again basic - Fridge, kettle, oven/grill with 2 hobs(microwave style type thing) Has what you need unless you intend cooking a roast!!
We did get talking to another couple who were half board who were not happy as food was not that great apparently (we never ate there to comment on this) but may be usefull info to you.
Indoor pool and sauna were clean, as was the outdoor pool and pool area.
Im 25 and my partner 27, we were pleased with out stay at the Topaz, its relaxed and friendly. If you are going on SC basis we see no reason to be dissapointed if your not expecting the red carpet treatment! Its has all you need for a relaxing holiday :o)
P.S If you looking for food try the Steak House next to the cimema - you wont be dissapointed! :o)
Advice: Easy if you want to relax and enjoy some peace!
Activities: The Steak House. And take a bus to Golden Beach!
Good for: Beach
" WORST HOTEL IN THE WORLD "
Submitted By: orion7010the maid sevice was in all honesty very good apart from the fact that when you put do not disturbe on the door they just ignore the sign and walk in anyway! plus cleaning can be done anytime of the day some days its 8.30am others it was 4 in the afternoon,
we stayed in room 5502 on the top floor overlooking the pool problem here was we were also right next to the lift which keeps you awake throughout the night with people constantly using it, and because its that old it rattles and makes a hell of a noise! so now to the room.... well room 5502 has to be the smallest room i have ever stayed in you could sit on the end of the bed, streach out your arm and touch the wall in front!!! also the bathroom! well if you are ok sting in a room were you cant even open the door fully because it bangs on the sink behind it then this is the place for you!! plus the shower runs from boiling to ice cold and the shower head just moves at will randomly whenever it chooses to!. in my opinion a so called 4 star hotel should have tea and coffee making facilities in the room right?! NOT!!!! and with only one channel on the tv that speakes in english i was Very Very disapointed in the standard of the hotel overall,
the best feature and the only redeeming quality for this hotel is the food, very nice very well cooked and presented buffet style meals, however it is also independant outside catering that operates in the hotel.
if your going all inclusive dont expect to get gr8 service in the bar either because you just get the cheep nasty crap that you can get down the local shop for pennies, also if you like the atmosphere that you find in a cemetery then this is def the place for you!
ok enough about the crappy hotel, MALTA if you have never been then in my oppinion ther are a lot nicer places that will give you the same sunshine for a fraction of the expense & when i say expense i mean EXPENSE! beer on the whole was resonable and quite cheep being only around 1 euro to 1.50 euro a beer, (hotel topaz - 2.90!say no more!)on the see front sat off in the sun However! food was not as cheep but if you shop around you can find a decent meal for around 4.50 - 5.00 euro, i was a little puzzled when you consider that malta is in the med & when you stand on the sea wall and look out at the vast ocean that seems to go on for miles & miles and think about how abundant the seas really are,.. then you gaze down at one of the many price boards along the sea front offering the freshist of fish caught only that morning for a VERY UNRESONABLE 14.95 euros!! yes that is correct FISH AND CHIPS - 14.95 EUROS!!(why dont you take my pants down and spank me while your at it!!!)i have a very good pic of the menu boards if anyone wants one! the most expensive was between silema & st julians at a very costly 17.95 euros for fish and chips!
as for shopping, apart from beer, fags are resonable at anything from 3 euros onwards for 20 cigs.but again thats about it, mac donalds - 6.50 euros for a meal, burger king about the same, electrical good are Very expensive as i recall looking at a nokia n95 which in this country (uk)is around £250 - £350 on pay as you go or free on most contracts, MALTA 700 EUROS!! (£700)
maltas bus service is fantasic every 15 mins or so & will take you all over the island for pennies.
watch out for the timeshare vampires that will sucker you in with false promises and lies DONT DO IT ... YOUR BEING CONNED OUT OF YOUR MONEY!!! you dont get anything in return for 4 0r 5 thousand pounds!!
Overall i enjoyed malta,it was hot and dry most of the time with only the wind causing minor moaning from my spouse! but the hotel topaz that was crap & a lot of older people were saying exactly the same thing as me, so i will not be returning to malta in the near future & if i ever do it will def not be to the hotel topaz.
" A big let down "
Submitted By: linsxxxBut they sent us to our hotel room which is under some corridor which looks like a hostel
and the room was filthy. The manager kindly moved us to a better room which was on the other side on the nice part of the topaz but we noticed that in the shower there was a hole in the window so we felt uncomfortable and closed up the hole. The only staff that was helpful was the manager, the only restaurant that was open was the emerald restaurant which was not nice.We couldnt use the outdoor pool as it was freezing cold, the location of the hotel is poor and we felt intimated as the main age group was 5o plus the only good thing i would say about the hotel is that the indoor pool is very nice,i wouldnt come to bugibba again as there is no entertainment and the weather wasnt that nice but apparently from july its roasting.
Advice: Not a place if your young, have kids and like entertainment
Activities: The italian bar and restaurant in bugiba square
Good for: City Breaks
" Great Value for Money! "
Submitted By: lilaclady82The staff were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble and always on hand if you wanted to know anything about Malta.
The rooms were clean, spacious, and cleaned every day. The view from the balcony was not great but I didn't need it to be I was hardly in the room. I had a comfy bed, shower, mirror - what more does a girl need.
The food was also lovely, not your typical burgers, hot dogs and chips. In the evening there was always a large salad selection, and a hot buffet of fish, meats, potatoes, rice, pasta and soup. The desserts were so nice. There was a different selection of foods each night. something for everyone, even for a fussy eater like me. The breakfast was equally as good with hot buffet, toast, cereal, fruit etc. If you ever wanted something that wasn't on the counter all you had to do was ask the staff.
Some of the guests staying were there for up to 6 weeks and go every year they like it so much.
The bus stop is a 2 min walk away and from there you can discover the whole island and its wonderful attractions from 54 cents so no need to hire a car.
The hotel had entertainment on during the day and each evening but if this isn't your thing there is no pressure and the other local towns are only a bus or taxi ride away.
This is a great value hotel and has everything you need for a great holiday. It is no Hilton but equally you are not paying Hilton prices!
Advice: March is still out of season so most places were still closed.
Activities: The local busses are great, they take you all over the island and are really cheap, great fun!

" Topaz "
Submitted By: PeepsIncidentally, I can thoroughly recommend a little local bar, La Pasion, on Triq-i-Alki, (out of the hotel, cross the road, first right, and it's on the left hand side.) Louis, the owner, is very friendly, and serves excellent food at very reasonable prices.
So, we were entirely satisfied with the Topaz, so much so that before we left, we had already decided to return next year, this time for two weeks.
" 2 weeks self catering; sept 2008
Ok, this hotel is not a 4* like everyone else says....I would of recommended it for a cheap, short stay. But on our 6th day, my partner accidentally left his wallet in his jeans on the chair in the room. 200 Euros got stolen. Luckily they didn’t take the full 400. This was obviously the maid that took it, however, we called reception, explained what we had discovered on our return to our room that afternoon and they sent up the duty manager. Not really that apologetic and said nothing he could do as maid had gone home for the day (and they kept a record of who did what room) and said cant point finger and blame her because maintenance and security also have keys to the room. GREAT! So any one could have stolen it, but the jeans were left out on the chair every day and the one day a wallet was in the pocket and not in the tiny safe (which they also make you pay for) is an obvious coincidence.
Bugibba is ok but a bit run down, lots of bars and restaurants have closed down and lots of unfinished apartments and hotel builds around making the whole place not very picturesque.
Plus, no decent night life in Bugibba after 11.30 pm in September maybe it is busier in summer but next time I’d stay somewhere where at least a bar is open past midnight!
" I do not usually bother doing reviews... "
Submitted By: Miss S GoodThe rooms are basic, comfortable and clean and no different from any other european hotel I have ever stayed in. The only thing I thought was not great was the size of the beds - fine for me as I am quite small but my partner is 17stone and was in danger of falling out of bed when he turned over (not that he complained, it was a perfectly comfortable bed). If we had wanted the beds changed we only needed to ask. The bathroom was perfectly adequate and clean towels were provided every day. The air conditioning was a godsend (worked perfectly in our room once you figured out the controls which took all of about 2 minutes and every room has its own controls - maybe the people complaining about it did not realise you had to switch it on to make it work!!!!!) The food was excellent - I am an extremely fussy eater and always have problems when I go abroad but this time I can truthfully say I ate very well and enjoyed every single meal - there are plenty of choices for the evening meal - there is plenty of variety at breakfast with the usual cold meats, toast, fresh fruit, cereal, bacon, eggs, sausages etc (same in every country I have ever visited) and the same here in the UK. One thing worth mentioning that no one else seems to have - if there is something you want at breakfast or dinner that you cant see ie fresh fruit, ice cream, fried eggs you only have to ask and you will get it.The staff were always friendly and were as helpful as they could possibly be. The swimming pool was always clean as was the area surrounding it but do take care, the floor is very slippery - I know because I went flying and hit my head on the concrete floor - but help was at hand very quickly from the hotel staff - after that I made sure I wore rubber flip flops. There is a pool bar which serves lovely snacks at very reasonable prices and the service was excellent. There seem to be a lot of reviews complaining about the lifts and corridors, well, the lift nearest the reception area was temperemental and also rather small as was the stairway next to it, however, if all these people complaining bothered to take a 30 second stroll down the corridor there are 2 more larger lifts which worked perfectly and a stairway next to them that was much wider. Not sure what the complaint is about the corridors but then I didnt go on holiday to explore corridors!!! As far as I am concerned a corridor is there to get you from A to B, so long as you can walk along it what more do you need. There is entertainment every night but it is somewhat old fashioned with most of the songs coming from 50's, 60's and 70's but it suited us because we wanted a peaceful holiday without the usual nightclub music and revellry that is found in most european countries - if you want different entertainment there are plenty of bars in Bugibba square which is about an 8-10 minute walk away. The square is also where you will find most of the shops, a rocky beach area and lido's. There are plenty of excursions you can book which I would recommend you book through the agencies down in the square as they are much cheaper than booking through your holiday rep or hotel. To sum up I would recommend this hotel for couples who want a comfortable hotel and a peaceful holiday. I should mention the students - there are plenty of them at this hotel in the summer as there is a summer school nearby but they were absolutely no trouble at all - the students in the UK are a 100 times worse - sorry, but thats the truth. If you want perfection and everything at your fingertips with service at the drop of a hat then book a very expensive holiday in a 5/6 star hotel and be prepared to pay 5/6 star prices for everything in the hotel. Oh, and lastly, we did hear quite a few people complaining about their rooms but as far as we could tell they were all moved on request so as I said earlier, if you want something just ask and maybe you will have a happier holiday. This hotel is definitely not for professional moaners.
" Ok, we will try to give as much... "
Submitted By: Mr P StevensFirstly, the rooms. In particular the decor and furniture are quite tired and dated but we have to say our room was very clean, spacious had a double balcony over-looking the pool. Everything worked (Hairdryer, Air Con, lights, television etc) and our room was cleaned daily and fresh towels provided.
Secondly, the hotel staff. Everyone we dealt with was polite, friendly and extremley helpful. We arrived very early and knew our check in time was not until 5pm. The reception staff did all the could to get our room ready and help us.
Thirdly, the food. The Emerald resturant was also ok. We ate there on four occasions, three times in the evening and once for breakfast. The food was always hot and usually there was a good choice. It seemed to always be a buffet, which was fine but there were a few issues to be aware of. The menu advertised was not always on offer. The pumpkin soup seemed to be wheeled out three days running until enough unaware guests finished it, despite the fact another soup was advertised. The quality of the breakfast was poor. As the week progressed food seemed to be recycled and reappeared as something else. This was not at all good. It was resonable value for money, E13.00 for dinner and E6.50 for breakfast. Better quality and value for money was the smaller pizza resturant on site, well worth a visit.
Finally, the hotel had its fair share of dark corridors and smelly store cupboards to navigate past. The lifts were a little cramped and dated but usually worked without fault. We did use the pool daily. It is as nice as it appears in the pictures. The location is a reasonable distance from the sea but only a 10 minute walk really. The location is really quite nice and a good base to tour the island.
Some good tips: Ask reception for bus route map with all the departure times (This was invaluable if you intend to use public transport). Watch out for pushy time share agents they are around and are very annoying. If self catering, the nearest shop (Signed outside the Topaz) is convenient but is niether cheap or that well stocked. Walk slightly further straight down to the bus stop and turn left. The cash and carry there is cheap, well stocked and has prices on the products! The best resturant we found was called the Grapevine. Only two streets away on the way to the seafront, the three course set menu was just over 13.00 euros and offered a good choice, lovely food and excellent service. Give it a try. If you visit Valletta and want some where good to eat, head directly from the city gate bus station down the main street and Eddie's Cafe Regina is on the right. This is great.
Happy Holidays!

Submitted By: Mrs K EvansBuggiba it's self is a lovely place. The harbour is lovely with loads of boats leaving fror trips around the coast. We went on the Mermaid cruise to the Blue Lagoon and it was brilliant!! It cost 15 euros each and lasted all day. They even pick you up from your hotel!
There are a lot of people going around getting you to view time shares who are quite annoying. Some do a scam making you believe you have won something when you havent!! I cant recal the exact details but our rep told us to watch out for them.
Other than the old fashioned rooom and the lack of balcony, we had an amazing time. We will absolutley go back to Maltas there is so much to see and do. We didnt see all we wanted due to the unreal heat so we wont go back in August.
We will not stay at the Topaz hotel on our return visit.

This hotel is not exclusive to holiday makers, at the weekends it is swamped with locals who can pay up to 20euros to use the pool and other facilities as well as a buffet meal, for a day. This means the pool gets very very crowded at the weekends. I was not happy about this as my partner and I paid a lot for this holiday only to find out we share the hotel with anyone.
The pool has no lifeguard so be aware there is no one to save you if you get into troubles as one poor fella did. The edges around the pool get very slippery and I saw several people slip and smack their chins or land on their backs.
We went self catering, there is a supermarket less than 5 mins away, had all the pots, pans plates etc you would need. The room also had a lot of english power points so no need for adaptors.
Buggiba is a horrible place, lots os places closed down, lots of englsih brash bars and lots of restaurants serving poor quality food. Do yourself a favour and go to Valetta or St Julians where the food is fresh and plentiful.
