Absolutely awful!! We specifically requested that the holiday be in a location where (having no children of our own) there would be most likely minimal children / minors taking into account the time of year we were obviously expecting some! However, We arrived at the hotel... more

We arrived at this hotel at 10 o’clock at night on the 1st of October 2010 and joined a queue where one holiday maker was far from happy, and we were soon to find ourselves joining the ever growing number of people who did not get what they paid for. Our turn, and sure... more

The pictures of this hotel give a false inpression the reception and by the pool look that way. The rooms are very basic. Self cattering fasilities are poor, a few dodgie pans, the fridge either worked of did not, the cooker I would not use as it looked as if it was coming... more

Smoking and Xmas in Bugibba
After deciding to do something different for Christmas and New Year, me and my partner decided to go Bugibba in Malta staying in the hotel Bugibba Holiday Complex. Despite reading some reviews slating the place I was quite impressed by the hotels standard. The on site Jacks bar, restaurant and reception area were very impressive and the staff on site were very friendly and glad to help you. The apartment(which was self catering)itself was clean and tidy comprising of bath/shower/toliet/fridge/cooker/kettle and numerous cooking utensils including plates, cups, cutlery. The maids were onsite every morning ready to clean your rooms. if like us we were going to relax the one thing I can mention is the cleaners start at 7.30 each morning and the corriders to the rooms are tiled. what I am trying to say is that the m aids trolleys were very noisy and clattered around making sure you were up at the same time as them. Sometimes I thought the wheels were actually square!! The location of the hotel is good, within 10 minutes walking distance either way to the local shops, pubs and supermarkets. The outdoor pool and indoor pool area was clean and tidy. Weather was ok for the time of year although too cold for the sea it was bareable to walk round during the day in t-shirts and shorts. Alot of the bars and shops in the resort were shut due to time of year I suppose but still remained a good few open. One thing I must say is, if you are a smoker one thing I did learn is that as of April 2005 no smoking is allowed in any of the bars. Some pubs however have overcomed this and opened conservatories for us smokers, this was very much appreciated as during the night the weather did turn cold. Bugibba itself is a small resort and like we did we rented a car (£75 for 10 days) and travelled round the island. Nice places we found to visit are Valletta(plenty of shops) Blue grotto(clearest blue sea I've seen, where boat trips can be made) Gozo (ferry ride roughly £12 to its sister island)and Mosta (nice shopping village). The beaches itself are rare, most resorts have the facilty to swim but they are very rocky in places and could be classed as a little dangerous. All in all the trip itself was very pleasant, the hotel was nice, the resort ok but if you are serious sun lovers I would stick to going when you know for definate it will be warm and Im sure the weather would make the holiday alittle better. Good luck and happy travelling, I do hope someone finds this helpful.
better than other reviews said
We took a last minute booking with Thomsons, a choice of three possible resorts to be allocated on arrival. The Bugibba Holiday complex had the worst reviews of the three and we were dreading being allocated there. Surprise, when we got to Malta, we were all allocated to the Buggibba. The apartment was a nice size and had everything we required. The decor is a bit tired and needs updating, this was going on throughout the hotel while we were staying, but okay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The public area were very clean and nicely finished. There was nightly entertainment but the same every week. The pool area was clean and there was a heated pool with hot tub so ideal for the winter months. The hotel was quieter at this time of year and we enjoyed our stay but we did say that we might not have enjoyed it the same in the summer, when it would be busy and difficult to find seats etc. All in all this was excellent value for money and a pleasant surprise after reading the other reviews. The one complaint and that is off Malta, not the hotel, was the harassment from the time share reps in the square and on the sea front, they are a real pest!
Don't go there.
Worst apartments we have ever stayed in, the reality was nothing like the travel agents description, the matresses were stained and dirty, the kitchen units and the furniture was falling to pieces, there was no were to sit and eat even though it was a self catering apartment and the sheets and towels looked like they have been used to clean the floors. The swimming pool area was not big enough for the size of the hotel, not enough space for half the guests and it only got the sun for a few hours a day. definately one to miss when booking to stay in Malta.
Absolute dump
Worst place I have ever stayed in. Arrived very late night to be allocated room 202 - The smell was disgusting, damp walls in the bedroom, mouldy bath/tiles/shower, kitchen blind covered in mould/stains. Refused to spend one night there and after an argument was put into room 131 overnight. 131 not as bad as 201 but definitely not great. No towels so had to wait 1/2 hour for someone to deliver them so we could wash. Now 2.30 AM & got to sleep only to be woken up every 1/2 hour as the room was right next to the lift / stairs. Asked for a change the next day & was told nothing available until the following day. Tried to fob us off with the room next to 202 which we refused & was eventually transferred to 503, which although needing refurnished & having leaky air conditioning (You could shower in the kitchen!), it was clean enough for our remaining stay. Heard a lot of others complaining in reception about rooms, dirty mattresses etc DO NOT STAY THERE!!!
Hotel from filthy hell!!!
Having just returned from this hotel with very negative opinions, advice if booked cancel. I did not book this as a budget holiday but was allocated less than budget accomodation. On arrival was shown to dirty noisy room took day and a half to be moved, to an even noisier dirty room. Even more worrying was the fact both times the beds had dirty sheets, fridge, bathroom and general shabbiness of the furniture. On reflection hotel needs a total refurbishment and Kim and Aggie brought in!!! They would sort the housekeeping staff out. Malta is a country worth visiting, very friendly people and many beautiful buildings and interesting places to visit, the Buggiba Holiday Complex is not one of them.
Not as bad as the other reviews have it
I'm quite saddened to see some of the ultra-negative reviews of this hotel. True it could do with some updating, but it is in reasonable condition and you do very much get what you pay for. I liked the location - close to the square and a short walk from shops and fabulous bus station so we could explore this fabulous little island to our heart's content. The added bonus of studying the local feral cats was great! The locals leave them food and water around the place. The roads are bumpy and some of the streets have some rubbish lying in derelict sections, but all of the main tourist track is fine and the people here are incredibly friendly. Back to the BHC - our room was acceptable, though the air con was intermittent (but the fan on the wall did a decent job). The pool was clean and I saw them cleaning it regularly. The entertainment was of the standard you expect in places like this (makes me laugh/cringe) but no worse than anywhere else. The staff in the hotel were mainly friendly, apart from the barman in the poolside bar who we nicknamed 'chuckles' - made Jack Dee look like a barrel of laughs. Basically the hotel was decent, if unspectacular, and certainly considering what we paid it was fine. If you're expecting everything to be tip top and perfect then you are in the wrong place, but if you take your holiday in a more relaxed and dare I say more Maltese way then you will enjoy your stay just fine. Malta is a truly wonderful place and Bugibba was perfect in that it was almost entirely without the sort of lager lout, laddish scumbags who spew on the streets and make you ashamed to be from England. If you want a great base for a holiday in a great country then stay in Bugibba - and if you want a reasonable hotel at a budget price then stay here. Without seeing other people's rooms I can't comment on the things others have said, but it seems that several reviewers expect way too much of what is essentially a budget hotel.
What a toilet
Arrived at hotel at 6am for 5 nights. Got taken to the room by a member of their staff. Hotel looked a bit rough around the edges whilst on route to our room. However, after finally arriving at the room after going down one elevator and up another one, we opened the door to the room..................Oh my god, what a ---- hole. This was like a public toilet. I turned to my wife and said 'lets get a couple of hours sleep here and find somewhere else'. Unfortunately, we had already paid but I wasnt bothered about this. We had 3 hours sleep, went down to breakfast (this consisted of 2 rashers of bacon, 2 small frankfurt sausages, 1 very badly cooked egg and a small portion of beans............disgusting. We finally found a room at St Pauls bay called the 'Gillieru harbour Hotel', we recommend this one as the staff where friendly, excellent location, clean, next to the sea and affordable. Anyway, we went back to the b.h.c to check out and receptionist asked 'is it because the weather that you are leaving early', at which I replied 'no, the hotel is disgusting'. He said nothing to this, infact he didnt even offer to help us in any way. Please do not judge Malta by this hotel, as Malta is a lovely country with friendly people. Read the reviews on any hotels first, dont be an idiot like me.
Absolute dump
Were just back from Malta and let me tell you we are glad to be home, we went there for a wedding (not my own thank god) and it was a disaster from start to finish. The bhc was a discrace, when we arrived we all went to or rooms and within minutes the 12 of us were all back down at reception again trying to get moved, there was food stuck to the carpet of the floor there was something growing on the walls and the childs bed was a fold down one welded to the floor with springs sticking out.The worst room was a single room which was in the bottom corner of the hotel with a view of a wall it was like a dungeon!!We finally got moved into ok just OK rooms. In the morning we complained to the rep who simply said ''you got what you paid for'' and made some reference to ''buying a second hand car'', then when the bride mentioned she was there for her wedding he simply said thats irrelevant!Overall malta was boring dull and lifeless and i wouldnt recommend it and BHC should be knocked down.Stay well away!
not the best, not the worst
hotel not as bad as other reviews may have you believing. Yes you do have a race on to get the sunbeds but can you tell me where this is not the case. Saw the pool cleaned and tested. Saw the pool get shock dosed with chlorine most evenings. Hotel is in reasonable condition but rumour has it that it is going to be refurbished in the next 18 months. Hotel food very good. Maid cleaners good but noisy from 9am. My biggest dissapointment was the way it appeared that the maltese dis-respected their own country. It was dirty with litter in most places and no sign of a clean up happening. There are of course the nicer bits but in general I left Malta with a feeling of sadness. I will not reccomend Malta as a holiday destination to anyone as I think there are far nicer, cleaner places to go.
house of doom
just returned after two weeks at the b.h.c. no rooms on arrival in spite of booking in january!!! 2 rooms half board. receptionist rude to the point of being contemptuous. given 2 self contained rooms which were filthy no air con and broken and cracked toilet bowl. promised our proper rooms the next day after complaining bitterly along with half the hotel. proper rooms not much better one still contained the previous occupants rubbish and was being painted! the place was overrun by students , no sleep as they charged up and down the corridor shouting screaming and banging doors complained but nothing was done. people reserving sunbeds at 6am when a sign asked them not to. restaurant was fine first week but went down hill second week. the mercury direct rep wasn't much help we never saw him only when we caught him to get a complaint form as the brochure made no mention of it being a student hotel. our advice don't go there.
