Golfing mecca
I stayed here for four nights with 12 pals on a golfing holiday. The hotel itself is pretty much faultless. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the 27 holes of golf, in three loops of nine, are probably too tough for the average club golfer and they were in the process of some makeover which was an inconvenience. Also (being low season) the swimming pool was out of action and undergoing some restoration. With temperatures in the 90's this was annoying. The rooms are quite large and comfortable with two double beds, two... more
THE Choice for Golf in the Sotogrande Area
The most upscale choice for golf in the Sotogrande area. I was in the area inspecting hotels and courses for my epicurean golf travel business (CORK & TEE). We either played or visited all the courses in the area. The best in order are Valderamma, Sotogrande, The Reserve, Almenara and San Roque (OLD & NEW). Investment in the latter property has lapsed in our opinion. The hotel is perched near the top of coastal mountain range and offers great views to the coast and the adjacent mountain range. It's very peaceful and the approach... more
Beautiful but remote
The Almenara is beautiful & is perfect if you love golf & lots of peace & quiet. However, do not bother if you don't have a car! The hotel is situated within the Sotogrande estate and to even leave the estate you need a car, it is not walking distance at all. The hotel is surrounded by lot of expensive property but not much else, the nearest restaurants or bars are in the Sotogrande Marina, you can get to the Marina using the complementary bus from the hotel, the journey time is about 20 mins but the bus stops running at 7.30pm. The... more
A very relaxing and good quality hotel
We stayed for 2 weeks (booked through Golfbreaks) with a young baby (9 months) and after an initial problem when they refused to provide the suite we had paid for through our agent (2 days spent with a junior suite rather than a suite) we finally got what we had paid for. The commercial sales director visited our room personally to apologise for the confusion and offered to refund our first night and offerred me a free round of golf at La Reserva (his wife works in the pro-shop !). The rooms are above average for a good Spanish hotel and... more
Wonderful Golf Hotel
Stayed there on expense account in January 2006. Hotel was obviously not full so we got full attention of staff. Were driven on a electric mini car to our room with door directly on golf fairway. Room excellent with all necessary amenities. As we were not in "Executive" type of room. We had to pay EUR 20 for the indoor pool which is very expensive if you intent to swim a few lengths. Breakfast very good but other restaurant quite expensive. The obvious solution is to look further but you need a car as it is completely... more
Great hotel for a relaxing break
We stayed 3 nights at the Almenara for a short sun/golf break in Aug 05. Having read the reviews on the site i was a bit unsure about whether we had booked the right place but I was not disappointed. Yes the hotel is about 4km up the hill, inland from the sea but it is in a lovely spot surrounded by views and golf courses. You also get a lovely breeze which was very welcome in the August heat! The room was lovely with a balcony, mini bar, tv, playstation, lovely marble bathroom and then great extras like a beach bag and beach towels to... more
Astonishing hotel
I stayed at this hotel in may 2005 and we had quite a bad time. The rooms in all fairness are perfectly fine, no problems there. But the hotel is miles from anywhere so you cannot just walk to a bar or restaurant. You have to drive for a good 15 minutes atleast. Which is fine if you just want to stay on the complex. There was not a single flower in the gardens or around the pool so it seemed really bland, everything was green. I asked about trips for the day to various attractions near by, and the front desk did not know a... more
Almenara - Costa del Sol - Fabulous
Just got back from a week long stay at the Almenara on the Costa del Sol. Really nice hotel. It has just re-opened after being closed by it's owner, NH Hotels, to be refurbished. Really nice... Each room in the hotel is it's own little building attached in rows like houses in the "White villages" of the area in Spain. Very large, well appointed room. Superb marble bathroom. Nice outside sitting porch with table, chairs, and a great view of the Mediterranean. The hotel staff was really very helpful and professional. The night... more
