Macdonald Francis Hotel reviews

Sep 2011, playdoh

I stayed at the Mercure Francis with a friend as part of an overnight trip to Bath in October 2010. We were looking for something simple, fairly inexpensive that was in a reasonably central location for exploring Bath. More or less we got what we paid for. If you're just... more

Great Location
Great location, staff very friendly, perfect for visiting Baths historic Roman baths
One night visit
A one night stay as I had an evening reception to attend. Great central location was the best part and the common areas were quite classy in furnishings and decor. The room however was a bit of a let-down and a real flashback to the eighties (or earlier). The bathroom felt particularly basic and old fashioned (not in a fashionable way!) and disappointing for a hotel of this standard. Staff were generally fine but the waitress at breakfast was somewhat slow!
Receptionist problems
When oh when is someone going to sort out the receptionist problems at this hotel. The older woman who was on duty when we stayed was rude, unhelpful, arrogant and treated us as if we were doing them a favour by staying there rather than a paying and valued guest! We had to be moved from the room we were in due to the occupants of the room above us having a domestic arguement until 4am. We did come of best in the end though as we were moved to a 4 poster room which was gorgeous. Can I just than the two who were argueing for making our stay... more
Beware! Don't stay at the Francis!
My husband and I realized that we would be spending a lot of money on this hotel but figured it would be something special. I asked for a particularly quiet room when booking. I was very glad that I had since it became clear that the floor boards in the halls had needed to be renailed down about 25 years ago. It would have been quaint if it hadn't been so loud! Fortunately, since I had asked for a quiet room, it was in a place that not many people needed to walk by. I fear that otherwise people walking by would have awakened me. Upon... more
your paying for location!!!
Recently returning from the Francis Hotel in bath, I must say I was generally disappointed. After visiting the city for many years now, we decided to pay the extra and stay in the impressive looking Francis hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and the location is great. The problems started at check in when we were told that we would have to wait 40 minutes for our room. Finally an hour later the room was ready. The room itself was just not worth the money. It was dark, with a beautiful view of the car park! The bathroom had no curtain so... more
Overpriced
I stayed B&B at the Francis Hotel on Saturday 4th March 2006, the price for which is £170. Unfortunately this hotel is not worth paying that sort of money, as the quality appeared to be little more than that expected of a Travel Lodge. Problems started immediately with the carpark being full, leading to us parking a significant distance away. Anybody familiar with Bath will know what a problem it is to park in the City. The Hotel itself, in Queens Square, is in the most amazing building, designed and built, in the 18th... more
Absolutely Terrible Stay at the Francis
We stayed at Francis in Feb 06, weekend getaway after Valentines. I have never been so dissapointed with a hotel before. The manager on reception was almost rude, the way she spoke to us, the bar was dirty and shabby and our room was not ready by check-in. When we finally got in the room, we thought we were in a 2 star hostel, incredibly run down + no hot water! This hotel may have seen good days in 70's but looks like it never have been updated since. And I don't comment on the black&white photographs of actors/presenters that stayed... more
Not quite what it says on the tin but great location and reasonable hotel
Stayed at the francis for 3 nights 14-17 feb. Hotel is in a great central location and my room was fine so I was happy with everything. I was on a course and not paying the bill so I was not expecting luxury. Unfortunatly I think some people will be disappointed from the hotel as it looks quite grand from the outside and this is not reflected inside. The official web site does talk of style and grandeur which is not a true reflection of what to me was a 3 star hotel As some other reviews mention some of the hotel is a bit... more
A Great Disappointment
Being a regular guest at Macdonald's Hotels, i was greatly looking forward to our stay at the Francis Hotel. Before even entering the hotel however, i was appalled at the very limited parking available. Af ter eventually finding somewhere to park, we entered the hotel to be told abruptly that if we did not go straight to the restaurant we would not get any dinner. Dinner was average and the same with breakfast but could be greatly improved. Our room was clean but was not like the pictures from the brochures or on the internet. It was also... more

  • Might be worth asking about room differences. Our room wasn't that great but maybe we just got the lowest type. - by playdoh
