After our 2 summers in Tunisia (Hammamet and Mahdia, hotels El Mouradi) we were very very shocked with this one, and said NEVER AGAIN. One thinks - information you get from agency (Suncani odmor) and another in hotel. Of, course, we were mad. Not even got welcome drink.... more

There is a real mix of comments on here and other sites and I went with an open mind. I took my 8 year old son on holiday last week and overall the hotel was good. I didn't expect too much considering how much it cost and I was quite pleased with my choice. When we got... more

Having previously been here in 2006 we found the hotel has not changed at all. Although advertised as a 5 star i would put it at 4+. The food was excellent and the variety was good every night. The Accomodation although not luxurious was what we expected. This time of year... more

I don’t know who gave the Hannibal Hotel 5 stars but who ever it was they need retraining in the Catering trade, the reception staff are not helpful to their customers and they're rude. I have never paid for towels and for using the swimming pool, not in a five star... more

Relaxation
I was very worried about going to hannibal having booked it before reading the reviews. There was absolutely no need however as this hotel is a perfect get away for any one wanting to relax and soak up the sun. The food was delicious, the staff friendly and the hotel very clean. The hotel is a bit dated but it has a perfect location. This hotel is not suitable for party goers as it's a bit quiet.
Spotless Clean
We have just returned from a week at The Hannibal Palace. The hotel staff were friendly and amenable. The room was a good size and the bath room included a full bath. We are vegetarian and we expected a restricted menu. However, the restaurant did cater for us. The vegetarian food available was comparable to other med resorts. The dining room was never crowded and no queues for the food. The only concern I have was the lack of entertainment provided. We had to pay for the only show that week, however it was excellent. I was suprised that we had to pay for the sun beds, but this is a sign of the times. I have been informed this is commomn place now. I suggest that as an alternative to a daily rate, a reduced weekly rate would be more feasible.
Tired, shabby, outdated
If you believe in "You get what you pay for", beware the Hannibal Palace! We booked a very very last minute holiday to Tunisia and knew that for the money we'd paid, we would be getting a 'cheap and cheerful' holiday. What we didn't baragin for was a '5 star hotel' which was at least twenty years in need of a refit. You only need to sit in the lobby for five minutes before the smell of mothballs overpowers you. To cut a long story short, after changing rooms because of a noisy, smelly extractor fan outside the balcony, and after a breakfast which left a lot to be desired (in a room that makes 'Abigail's Party look 21st Century), we were so thoroughly depressed that we knew we had to move. Luckily, the rep was great and really helpful, and after a couple of calls and a visit to a couple of hotels, we switched to the Royal Kenz, which was fantastic. There is so much more I could say about the Hannibal, but my advice is spend just a little more and get a real 5 star holiday in a place like the Royal Kenz. If you don't agree, you only need to visit a couple of other hotels along the strip (the Marhaba Palace also looked good) to know that the Hannibal is in dire need of updating. Having said all of that, we loved our week in Tunisia (when the sun shone!) and once we were settled, had the relaxing holiday we were after. We would certainly go back, but only to a hotel like the Royal Kenz.
avoid at all costs
a very dated hotel that is rated 5star should be rated 2star the food is terrible luke warm and repetative, the staff keep change even when over £8 english they charge for sunbeds I cannot believe this in a five star hotel the priced changed for these on a daily basis when pre printed tickets were scribbled out and changed, the hotel towels were disgusting so grey that I would not have used them as floorcloths. The rep informed us during our stay that Med Hotels had withdrawn from this hotel because it has so many complaints from guests about the food quality. We stayed half board and ate out most of the time after looking at the poor quality available each evening.
Excellent
I read all the reviews on this web site before we went, but after we had booked, so it was with some trepidation that we arrived. Quite honestly, i dont see what all the whinging is about. The hotel was quality; the staff could not have been more helpful; the restraunt food was very good, although a little restricted in choice, in the a la carte Aida, anyway. Ive read some moaning about tipping and the pestering to get tourists into the locals shops. Two comments here: 1. Tipping has become an accepted practice these days, blame the evil empire on the other side of the Atlantic. Why shouldn't the arabs expect the same? Anyway, you always have the right not to tip!! 2. The pestering. Come on, what do you expect? Tourists with money, then of course the locals are going to want to sell you something. They have families to feed as well. If you are not interested then the suggestion is to say 'No Thank You' firmly and politely. A perfectly satisfying week at an excellent hotel.
hannibal palace hotel
This hotel says it is 5* but not in british standards. we found that the A/C in the room would not stop leaking all the time and the staff did not seem able to sort the probem. Hotel reception was very nice and claen and staff there were willing to help. the rooms are basic and consist of a bed and tv and bathroom which was also basic. The food in the hotel was nice but seem to feel a bit rushed when you sit down, so in short was nice for a week but no longer and dont take in to account the star reting as it is nothing like in the uk i would say it was more a 2* at most a 3*
Great location, OK hotel
The Hannibal Palace was one of the original hotels in Port El Kantaoui and as such has a fantastic location right on the beach and next to the marina and shopping areas. It was also only a short walk to the place from which taxis and the tourist train left for Sousse. However it is also getting a bit long in the tooth, and some areas were a little shabby. Our room was not large, but was generally comfortable, though the bathroom had a persistent smell of cabbage. The view over the marina was good. We were on half board and the food was generally OK - not amazing, but with enough choice that we could always find something to our taste. The pool and beach front area was pleasant but at the time we were there in winter there were no staff circulating to take orders for drinks or snacks, which would have been nice. I expect this is different in summer. Overall the staff were friendly and helpful. A visit to Sousse medina is a must to experience the real Tunisia - Port El Kantaoui is pleasant, but is a very sanitised version of the real thing. We'd also recommend a trip on the catamaran Albatross - the price seems to vary so try haggling.
great holiday
The douglas*s northumberland. I have been reading some of the comments and strongly disagree with some of them. we were there for 2 weeks in August and had a great time, the staff were very pleasant and made you welcome. The hotel was very clean, maybes not a 5 star but not far off. The pool areas were constantly being cleaned and we found the reception staff very helpful, our rooms were cleaned daily and the bedding changed every other day. The food could of had more variety but what there was was ok, we have stayed in other areas of Tunisia and this hotel was the best by far. Our 13 yr old son resuscitated a man from malta on the hotel part of the beach and was highly thought of by the hotel staff recieving a letter of thanks four weeks after returning home, I think a hotel with staff whom had a didnt care approach would not have done this. We are booked to go back again next year this time for three weeks and woulod reccommend it to anyone.
Maybe a 5 star decades ago!!
When you book in to a 5 star hotel (especially in Tunisia where you have stayed in very decent 4 star hotels), you expect a certain level of quality. Unfortunately this hotel didn't live up to any of our expectations. It was pot luck as to whether you would get a smile from the members of staff - the cleaning and waiting staff were far more civil than the front of desk reception staff! We were put into a room which overlooked an extractor fan - to their defence they did give us an alternative when we complained - but all of the rooms were pretty small and very much lack lustre. Which I think can be said for the rest of the hotel. Even the rep was very open in confessing how few facilities this hotel offered. I had to take my son to the Marhaba Palace to the indoor pool because the Hannibal doesn't have one. And the food - well 2 - 3 star slops would be a better definition. Even though we paid for half board, we ate out the majority of the time - and we were left salivating when we checked out the Marhaba Palace restaurant - an embarassing comparison. I would recommend this hotel for it's location - it's perfect - but only go to this hotel expecting 3 star quality. I would recommend (as would the locals who I spoke to) the Marhaba Palace, the Kanta and also the Royal Kenz if you don't mind being a distance from the Marina. Hope this helps and happy holidays.
Hanibal Palace
My husband and I have just returned from a week away at this hotel. We have been to Tunisia 4 times previously so we knew what we were going to experience ie: haggling etc. However, we had previously stayed at the Imperial Marhaba, Marhaba Palace and Kanta but as a 'treat' my husband booked a 5* week away at the Hannibal....definitely NOT 5* probably at best a good 3*. The waiters and bar staff were lovely, the reception staff perhaps could do with brushing up on their personnel skills. The food really is dreadful, so we would recommend you go B&B and eat at one of the marina restaurants. When we arrived at the hotel, as my husband had put on the booking form that we were there to celebrate our anniversary, the reception manager gave us a lovely 'suite'. The room was larger than the average and the bathroom/toilet were all ok. However, the cleanliness and bedmaking could have bben better. One night, before retiring for the night, I had to remake the bed completely as the sheets had just been folded under the duvet. Would we return....certainly to Tunisia, but definitely not to the Hannibal. The location was fabulous, right in the marina, and the bar staff were so friendly, but the actual hotel, no, I think there are better.....
