Rooms need refurbishment
from Simon-Karen
Just returned from a 2 day break at the Hilton in Newport. On first impressions the hotel looks good. We were given a room on the ground floor, this was a twin family room. The room was awful and not the standard I would have expected of the Hilton. The decor was floral and old fashoned. The walls were dirty, dented, scratched and well worn. The ceilings were cracked. The taps and tiles were brown with some mould. The telephone socket was hanging off the wall. In general the room was chatty. Later in the day we were moved to the first floor which was slightly better but still in dire need of refurbishment. Apparently the hotel is due for refurbishment this will be done from the top floor downwards. On a positive note the staff were friendly and helpful. Please note parking is £3.00 per night at this hotel.
Appalling level of service at the check in desk

We stayed at the Hilton Newport on the last weekend of July for a wedding, on the Dinner B&B package. For total cost £139 for two nights, I though we had secured an excellent deal, at what should be a high quality hotel. Firstly, let me describe the good point of the hotel: 1. Food quality was much better than expected (but then I always expect the worst from hotel meals!!) and the service from the restaurant / bar staff was very good. 2. First impressions of the room are good, spacious and clean. 3. Nice living well gym attached to the hotel. Nothing better than to unwind in Jacuzzi after a hard days partying! Now the bad: 1. Between initially booking the room and arriving at check-in, I in total confirmed 5 times, that a cot would be made a available in our room. Guess what...... 2. Whilst the initial impression of the room might be positive, the bathrooms have seen much better days. They have an old, manky feeling about them and the showers are very weak. You have to pump the toilet a good few times to get the water flow going!! 3. Key cards were always failing. They use the excuse that mobile phones cause the magnetic strips to fail but after some experimentation, I knew that was nonsense. 3. Later that evening, I was helping a friend check into his room. His just issued key card failed!! (see above!). Went back to reception and got it reset. We walked into the room and frightened some woman who was peacefully sleeping away, half to death. We had been issued the wrong room!!! No apology, nothing, from the check in staff, just given another room. 4. Next morning, my wife had to got to reception to get her card re-set (note, she doesn't carry a mobile phone). Check in staff say that our room is not in our name.... she can't reset the key card....but I've just slept in there, she explains....sorry no can do.... Wife goes back to room to try card again and it works... Yes it is our room so don’t know what the reception woman was on about... We're too busy getting involved in the wedding so we decide to leave the complaining to another time... 5. After the cleaning staff have been and gone, mine and 3 other friends rooms have not been replenished with clean towels and toiletries. It takes 2 attempts to get this rectified. 6. On check out, my whole bill is completely wrong. Wrong room rates, unknown bar charges, newspaper costs that I didn’t ask for etc etc etc. I had booked two rooms under my name and the second was correct but the first was not. In between the check out staff telling me the bill can’t be wrong and the manager coming to deal with the issue, I discover the reason for the incorrect charges... My room is under someone elses name!!!!! (explains the problems experienced in point 4 above!). The guy asks me to confirm the room I am in and I tell him. But it can't be sir, he says. That room is for Mr **** *****. I say I dont care who Mr **** ***** is, I have been sleeping in that room for the last 2 days... but but but..... ok the managers on their way. By this time, we have been faffing about trying to check out for 20 mins. I say, fine if you don’t have my name registered against the room I stayed in, I’m not paying for it. I am certainly to wasting anymore of my time trying to sort this out. I inform them that I will be at the bar finishing off my drinks for the next ten minutes. You have until then to sort it out otherwise I’m off. It’s been a week since I check out and I haven’t been charged for the room yet. Small compensation for all the hassle I went through! I will definitely never stay at this hotel again and as a result, I couldn’t recommend it to anyone else!!!
great value great food

We stayed for two nights with dinner but were too late on the first night so had sunday carvery instead . we were very pleased with all the food and with the staffs service. we nearly didnt book this hotel after reading other reviews but think for price that we paid it was excellent value. ok so the rear of the hotel needs some TLC but nothing to spoil a stay. good pool good bar . disgusting

We Visited the Hilton,Newport for a wedding reception and stayed the night as we live outside the area, but never ever again! The bar staff were absolutely useless not a care in the world, one guy behind the bar for hours! it was a wedding party how can you have one man working behind the bar???? We were told to look for our own glasses as he didn't have time to clean them! Everybody complained about the horrendous flat pints of beer that were continuously taken back to the bar. When the beer ran out were told that they dont manage the keys to the seller that is the managers responsibility and we would have to wait until he came in!! how convenient to sell us the most expensive beer they had left in their barrels! Check in was at 3pm, people qued for up to three quarters of an hour to check in. When we arrived at the room i was absolutely disgusted at the lack of cleanliness! The grime and mould in between the tiles in the bathroom was enough to make you feel sick! The stains on the tiles by the toilets! The peeling paint around all mirror frames etc it was just shocking no words could express how shocked and disappointed we were. Most of all when we checked out and settled the bill we were told to pay £109 when we were quoted £65 as part of the wedding party apparently we were in the 'Delux room' i laughed my head off! it was far from delux and never had bathrobes, wine or a paper! I would advise anyone to stay across the road in the travel inn if you have a choice as a couple of our friends did and dont even think about having your wedding reception there! It was a far cry from the standard we are used to at some of the other Hilton Hotels we have stayed at!
Very happy

Recently stayed at Hilton Newport for 1 night, after reading the previous reviews was not expecting a lot but was pleasantly surprised. Firstly our room was supposed to be a family room for 3 but only had 2 beds so we got offered an upgrade for nothing, wine, fruit and shortbread in room, good toiletries too, had a 3 course evening meal which was excellent, service a bit slow but food worth waiting for. Breakfast the next day was also very good and service much better. Swimming pool was good, lovely powerful showers, good sauna and steam room, jacuzzi, helpful staff in gym ref lockers, towels etc. My only complaint was 2 drinks at lunchtime cost me £9 which I thought was a bit expensive but probably standard Hilton prices, used to going Sharm El Sheikh Hilton all inclusive! Was hoping to go to Newport again this weekend but it is fully booked, look forward to our next trip there, can't see what the complaints were about!
tired

We stayed at this hotel as we were there at a charity evening. Upon arrival the receptionist was stern faced and not very helpful, but I must say the receptionist on departure was excellent. The bar staff were very obliging, and the charity evening meal was very good. The rooms were very tired looking and in need of a revamp, especially the bathrooms, The mini bar was empty, not even a bottle of water. The Room cost £90 plus breakfast, I suppose isnt too bad. I dont think I would stay here by choice, it was ok itstead of having to drive home.
Lacked the hilton sparkle
from JollyJR
This hotel is reasonable quality but lacks the Hilton experience. The room was large - two double beds. Decoration was a bit tired and the bathroom had definitely seen better days. The sink cracked , mold around the bath and the shaver point very loose. No problems with the food quality, breakfast was fine when we stayed plenty of it and freshly prepared, however the staff were mainly very sullen and a dispute arose amongst them which was dealt with in full public view - not at all professional.Excellent evening meal ! We were glad to have got a reasonable rate - would we stay again? Probably not. The parking charge is a rip off and was not stated upon booking.
Restaurant a let down
from Cpoulter
We stayed for two nights on the dinner package at the end of Dec 06. The room was large, clean and well presented. The restaurant however lets the place down. There is a lot of staff but they don't really do very much. We had to queue for a table for dinner and both breakfasts simply because the tables hadn't been cleared. The restaurant manager does most of the work to clear tables, seat people and take orders without much support. The room is dirty with some irritating flies (it was December!). Breakfast items regularly run out and you feel like you are scrabbling around for scraps. I was disapointed with our stay which was not up to Hilton's standard.
So, So
from Loll
The public areas of the hotel are OK. The room are a bit tired looking. The whole hotel just has a feeling that it could do with a major refurbishment. Rooms are a reasonable size - the reception on the TV was useless so take a book! I used room service for dinner - OK nothing special although service was prompt. Breakfast - it was included in my room rate so should I complain? Well, yes - it's a buffet and the food was tepid or cold. Not good enough. It's OK for business - wouldn't want to spend more than 1 or 2 night at a time.
Not the best Hilton around
from diveteam
I stayed here in October 2006, at first glance it looks like a nice hotel, the lobby is clean and the staff are very friendly. Being a Hilton Hhonors Gold club member I have been to a number of Hilton hotels and this looked like another one of the same high quality. Upon entering my room though that changed, it was not as bad as some of these reviews have said but the bathroom did have some mould and it looked generally unclean. The room could also do with a major refurbishment. I did not have an evening meal there, I decided to go over to the Celtic Manor 1 mile down the road for that. I did have breakfast there, it was a standard buffet full english that you helped yourself too. I was a bit annoyed that you had to pay £3 parking fee. Probably would not stay here again.
I recently stayed at the Hilton hotel Newport for a long weekend. The hotel itself is realy lovely. We visited the local walk in Ringland Woods and we were very impressed.
It is very assesable and the walk ways through the woods are very well laid out.
We spent a very nice few hours walking and feel it is well worth a visit.
