I stayed at the Old England Hotel (McDonald brand) with my girlfriend in January 2008 for an overnight stay. The hotel has just been refurbished and is beautifully decorated.
When we were checking in we were upgraded to a lake view room for free and the staff were excellent. The rooms are lovely, including double bed, two arm chairs and table, plasma TV and all the other accessories you would expect when staying at a 4* hotel.
When staying at the hotel you get free access to the spa & gym area, it has a swimming pool overlooking the lake, it also has sauna, steam room and ice room. The gym has state-of-the-art gym equipment.
The hotel restaurant and bar are very expensive and worth giving a miss as there are lots of good bars and restaurants on the doorstep of the hotel. Breakfast was included in the price and it was superb, best breakfast I have ever experienced-so try not to sleep in!
The only negative is parking, not many spaces! Overall I would give the hotel 8/10!

This is a beautiful hotel in the heart of Windermere. It offers a wide range of rooms with a number of them overlooking the lake.
The rooms are very spacious and include a comfy double bed, 2 cosy arm chairs, and a plasma television, a bathroom with shower and bath. The rooms are very warm and clean.
In the hotel there is a lovely spa including a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and an ice room, there are also other treatments available however these need to be booked in advance!
The hotel has its own restaurant and bar however it is very expensive, with most rooms breakfast is included, it offers an excellent choice of hot and cold foods in a lovely dining room overlooking the lake.
There are plenty restaurants, pubs and shops in walking distance of the hotel. A lovely hotel would recommend it to everyone!

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in the middle of March 2009. Location, staff and rooms etc all excellent. We were also very lucky with the weather which made it a great stay. The inclusive continental breakfast was very good although for the cost everything the cooked breakfast should be included. The hotel is surrounded by wonderful pubs and restaurants which means the hotel restaurant wasn't tried. Though with a bar bill of £8 for a small glass of Pinot Grigio Rose and the £30 Table Dote Menu in the restaurant it would have turned a wonderful stay into an extremely expensive one. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. We are already planning our next stay.
