Peculiar - Very Derek Acorah !
from Ashley-Brook
Stayed here for a business overnighter in late March. Having previously stayed at the Rightington I was told Kilhey Court was superior where in truth this wasn't at all the case. The decor is very Most Haunted, reminiscent of a Victorian gentleman's club. A mix of corridors, smoking roomesque, bizarre to say the least. I found it extremely difficult to find my room at the end of our evening due to the number of doors - was like something out of a horror movie, didn't have a clue where I was going, all extremely confusing. The dining was good, although the hotel itself quiet, the bar regal yet somewhat lacking in atmosphere. At one point after a drink or two it seemed almost like the famous scene from The Shining where the lack of personage and the eary atmosphere bought about a Jack Nicholson moment - thought I was going mad and had visions like those in the film. The staff were good, but overall it's outdated, lifeless and probably overpriced. The room was pretty basic - probably one of the worst I have stayed in, not at all great.
Great food!

Stayed here on business in December, and although the hotel was a little out of the way (taxi was £25 from Skelmersdale), I was very impressed. The room was very clean and had a very nice bathroom, and all things needed. My manager got a free upgrade to a suite with jacuzzi, which sounded great. I do think that the restaurant was one of the best I have found within a hotel. Top class dining at reasonable prices (although wine list could have been a little more extensive). I would definately recommend the hotel for business stays.
Nice dining, otherwise a little disappointing

The hotel is not in Wigan itself, but near Standish, to the north, on the road up to Chorley. There is loads of parking. Staff were fine and the rooms were ok. The hotel has a peculiar layout, spread across various buildings, and it was a little annoying not to have direct access from your bedroom in the old building to the restaurant, in the same building. You had to walk across to the new wing, down to reception and then go outside and up the driveway just to get back into the building that you started from in the first place! The rooms were ok, but in need of a little sprucing up. The spa is overrated. The pool is only 8m long (by about 5m wide) and about 1.5m deep - impossible to do any actual swimming in, and overcrowded with more than about three people in it. There is one quite small jacuzzi and then a few sauna and steam rooms. The restaurant and bar are very imposing and comfortable. Food was excellent and service was friendly and attentive.
Not worth the money, Avoid!

We stayed here at the weekend as part of a friends wedding. And i would completely agree that during the summer weekends this place should be completely avoided due to the sheer volume of wedding parties taking place. It was crowded and noisy, with party goers still rambling around the hotel at 3am, keeping us awake for most of the night. Once we found the place, which is impossible due to the lack of signposting. We checked in about 5pm (after paying a deposit) to be told that there were no double rooms cleaned for us so we could only be put in a twin, we booked the hotel and paid deposit 3 months earlier! We were then put in a ground room floor next to the reception desk, not the quietest room in the place. Our twin beds were tiny, the room was clean however the bathroom was mouldy and our towels provided smelt vile (like a deep fat fryer). We thought to relax we'd go for a swim in the pool, it was absolutely tiny and we were extremely disapointed, it was a teardrop shape no more tha 10m in diameter, barely room for 1 person!!!! The wedding food was tolerable, although for the price I'd have expected more than Chips, sandwiches and chicken legs on the buffet. The staff at the bar in the evening were also very rude. The price for drinks was extorniate - so if you're going to a wedding there be prepared to pay for it ( £19.00 for bottle of house white!). The walls are paper thin too, we were woken not only by other wedding guests from all parties, but a rather loud snorer in the room next door. And the reception desk on the other. The breakfast was slightly redeeming but the hot food served in baine maries that made it impossible to get what you wanted, the minute you opended it it'd fling back shut, and most of the hot food was luke warm. Not what I'd expect for the cost. Selection was reasonable, cereals, fruits, etc, etc, but again for cost I would have expected something better. I wouldnt recommend this hotel to anyone, and would steer clear it all cost. For the price it should be better than it is, you will be disappointed.
Jaded, dirty and mini pool

Stayed here recently and it's everything I hate in a hotel - old fashioned decor that's severely in need of an update, slightly grubby floors and bathroom and a very over priced restaurant. Only stay if you have to....
Dissapointing and Overpriced

I have just returned from a "luxury weekend break" in the Kilhey Court Hotel and frankly found the whole experience really disappointing. The whole weekend we were second to the people who were there for the two weddings that were going on - service was poor and the atmosphere was bad. My partner and I booked a double executive online - only to find that the "double executive" was not as it was promised. As a seasoned hotel visitor I must admit I was somewhat surprised at the size of the room - pokey for a standard - but for a double executive?! The view of the brick wall really made it for me - though it was the holes in the bed sheets for my partner. We mentioned it at reception and they assured us that it was a double executive and that they could not help us this evening, but would see if they could move us -which they did the following day to a much more pleasing room directly above the function where the wedding reception was on until 1am (plus all the people outside till 2am - chatting waiting for taxis etc) This is only a tiny bit that was wrong with the whole stay - the hotel bar was massively over priced (over £15 for two double G&Ts - made with house gin and slap dash service - because they were busy serving wedding guests) The restaurant menu and wine list was uninspired and overpriced - though we did consider eating in the Laureate until the service at breakfast, when we waited over 40 mins for it (when everyone else around us who entered after us had theirs ) and when it did arrive the orders were still wrong - the cutlery was dirty and the atmosphere was hideously stuffy. Our day out in the area was hampered by the fact the tourist information rack in reception was full of info for the Midlands and South Wales, our room service never turned up, the chamber maid barged into the room, realised we were in *then* backed out and knocked informing us that if we wanted the bed making we would have to find them and ask them to do it. The health spa is ok – but you have to fight the locals for machines and the pool is very small. All in all thoroughly disappointing (this is only a fraction of the things the “four star luxury hotel” had to offer us) – though our disappointment did lead us to find a fantastic little pub down the road (The Crown) which did excellent meals (The head chef from the Laureate relocated there) and at far more reasonable prices.
Could not recommend the Hotel more highly!

We have just returned from a weekend stay at Kilhey Court Hotel having travelled up to Wigan to support our team Ipswich Town. I took along my two teenage daughters and we all have nothing but praise for both the Hotel and the Staff. They managed to accommodate us in a shared room at a very reasonable rate inclusive of dinner and breakfast and all the food was fabulous, praise indeed particularly from one of my very fussy girls!!! The Hotel is in a beautiful situation with lovely manicured lawns and views, the old part of the Hotel is very welcoming with lots of comfy sofas and a big roaring fire, the restaurant layout is also fabulous with a fountain and FISH!! centrally situated and again wonderful views of the grounds. The girls enjoyed the leisure facilities, especially the jacuzzi. As always with Macdonald Hotels the breakfast selection was breathtaking, this is the second time that I have stayed in one of the hotels in the group and if this is the standard that they all come up to I can't wait to stay in some of the others.
Great - But avoid any Weddings/Parties

The Kilhey Court is a lovely hotel, with beautiful surroundings, and a nice lake with a footpath all around it. Service was excellent. Food great. Bedrooms adequate. However...we stayed over a Saturday night, and there was a wedding going on. We were on the third floor but the noise from the party was unbearable. It finally stopped around 2am, but for a further hour we were disturbed by the noise of drunken people returning to their rooms. I would definitely recommend the hotel, but check to make sure there are no functions planned before you book.
Stayed over at the Kilhey Court Hotel one night for a work event, ie Dinner-Dance eve. Our room although Clean and comfortable was very small compared with many others we have stayed in on other work gatherings in the UK. Our Dinner - Disco was ok with a Pleasant DJ which... more
