Arrived at Tenerife Sur on 21st July...
7 / 10
Aug 2006, Mrs N Owen

Arrived at Tenerife Sur on 21st July for a fortnight holiday. We had booked a one bed roomed apartment. Husband, daughter, pensioner mother in law and myself. The brochure states that two lifts were available so no worries about mother in law and her arthritic knees. Only problem was the lifts are only in one block of apartments and we were on the top floor of a block with out a lift.
The stairs are narrow and difficult to carry luggage especially when mother in law can't carry hers and husband has just had an operation on his shoulder. The apartment also looked over a road with noisy bars and mother in law is a poor sleeper. (Not a good start) Decided to talk to reception and request a move. We were offered one on the pool side which was good however it was still on the top floor. Decided it would be better than overlooking the noisy road. By the next morning it was clear that mother in law was not going to manage the stairs for two weeks.
Had a word with the rep at the welcome meeting and two hours later we were offered a ground floor room over looking the pool! Couldn't be better once all the luggage had been humped down the stairs. Although the problem was solved it was naughty that the brochure claims to have two lifts. We did lose out on the best part of a day moving and un packing not to mention the worry and pain for my mother in law.
The rooms are well furnished and clean but our fridge looked on it's last legs! The pool and pool area are nice and clean (very slippery!) but getting a sun lounger is a bit of a fiasco as they are stacked and chained up at night. The queuing up started at about 8 in the morning and they got unchained at about 9! Some people found this very stressful (husband).
We only ate at the restaurant once (breakfast) Not impressed so ate else where. The snack bar however was handy and enjoyable! There is a taxi rank directly out side the Tenerife Sur which was brilliant for us as mother in law couldn't walk too far.
There is a good place for breakfast called the Pit stop directly over the road. Also a row of very small bars which are handy and friendly.(open 'til late) However there did seem to be a few British 'locals' who were doing some shady deals at one of the bars at least. You decide whether that bothers you or not!
We went to the water park and didn't stay long. It was 23 euros entrance and 3.50 euros to hire sun bed. Then we discovered you had to hire the inflatables. After a 50 minute queue it cost 9.50 for a double and 7.50 for a single. The ground is cracking up under foot and I wore my flip flops so I didn’t cut my feet but I wasn't allowed to hold them on the chutes. Husband got cut legs on first chute and so did daughter. We weren't having a good time so we left. It is extra money to see the dolphins as well by the way. Big rip off. Felt sorry for families with lots of kids to pay for.

Tenerife Sur has helpful and polite staff. The rooms are cleaned five times a week and the bins emptied every day. Not the best place I have stopped at but certainly not the worst.

We booked this holiday independently...
8 / 10
Jul 2006, Miss JM Woodley

We booked this holiday independently of travel agents. We booked the flights with Fly Globe Span at around £300 for 3 people and the hotel direct at £300 for nine days. This was an absolute bargain for the 1/2 term holiday.
Flights
On time - no queues and really well run airline. (apparently the hand over day is Friday and Tuesday for most Holiday Companies in Tenerife so the fact that we flew out on Saturday and came back on Monday meant no queues.
Apartment
Very clean and adequate for what we wanted, Linen changed every other day and the bins were emptied every day. Room faced the road but we got used to the noise quite quickly and had the bonus of a small garden area so that made up for it.
I left my bag by the pool table and didn’t realise and next day it had been handed into reception, not a thing missing so I felt very safe there.
Facilities
The pool is nice but the usual towels on sun beds can make getting a place by the pool quite hard. I myself am not into 'advance booking' of sun beds and found it very annoying.
Really not much entertainment so bring some cards or be prepared to go to bars with music etc.
Food
The apartment restaurant is over priced. The evening buffet is dry and tasteless and not worth the money.
But there is a huge variety of restaurants and the most we paid was 71 euros for 3 of us for a very nice meal with sangria, wine and puddings as well as a sumptuous main course
Lots of variety with price ranges for all.
The Chinese Buffets are in abundance and are ok and good value about £10 euro a head with wine, so not at all bad.
Watch your supermarkets there is a huge difference in prices Los Trebious is on the outskirts of town and is really cheap we went every other day to get beer, a bottle of wine, picnic food, and evening nibbles for about 12 euros.
Outings
Mount Teide is spectacular with lots of lovely cafes on route. We hired a car which apparently is good as the coach drivers do not instil confidence when taking the corners of the road, which on a mountain road is not good.
Loro Parc
Is really worth visiting. Although smaller than it is made to seem it is really well run and we found the Orca Whale show and Dolphin show breathtaking as good as Florida. The cost of food is not inflated either there so you do not feel ripped off.
If you want to go whale and dolphin watching go to Los Cristianos harbour as this is about 10 euros a head cheaper than Los Americas. You don’t get spectacular sights but can make out the shapes of the mammals which is quite a thrill.
We wouldn’t go back, but only because we have so many places to see, but it is on our list for 2nd time around visits if we win the lottery and can travel endlessly.
